Patching Walls Tip: Never work out of the can. Use Putty Knives

It's common for painters to work out of the wall putty container. But it's a really bad habit to get into because it ruins the material inside the can.
When drywall mud or wall putty is exposed to oxygen it starts to dry. And this creates issues with the way you apply the compound and the way it dries.
Also when you dip your putty knives into the can regularly it tends to contaminate the good compound with what painters call "chunkies". Then when you try to skim out a surface with a smooth coating, these "chunkies" creates lines in your finished skim.
The answer: always scoop a small amount onto your larger putty knife, close the lid and work with two putty knives (one large, one small) until you finish the scoop you started with.
This not only helps with production but it creates clean working practices.
When you see painters working with 2 knives, you know you've hired professionals.

Using 2 putty knives keeps your work clean and eliminates contamination (and dried chunkies) from entering the clean putty.

Just a tip, for small patches like that 5 minute or 20 minute mud is more ideal. Sets up quick doesn’t shrink much easy to sand down. As a professional painter hot mud is my go to for all drywall patches

Yes. You could apply a primer to the wall patches but most paint products are self priming and you can get away with applying x2 costs of paint.

@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 6 ай бұрын
@@johnc1280 Yes that's true, however some window glazing is oil based and can take up to a week to cure (to be painted). Plus I believe window glazing needs to be primed before painting (but unconfirmed). So this pink Drydex is ideal for quick turnaround.

I put primer and paint over Drydex in the bathroom but it turns pink when you take a shower. Any suggestions?
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 10 ай бұрын
Strange. Lots of questions… -did you wait for the Drydex to completely dry prior to priming and painting overtop of it? -does the pink patch show through the primer and paint color? What color is the paint? -how long did you wait for the paint to dry prior to taking a shower? -do you have proper ventilation on your bathroom? If you want to talk to a paint expert feel free to call 1-866-724-6818.

@@NoName_213 patching isn’t a 1 size fits all. There’s some patching that dries harder and faster and others, like this pink product that is meant for smaller patches. This video isn’t promoting any specific patching, just a proven process that helps preserve a clean and efficient way to apply wall patching.

Why is it pink ?? 👋👋
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 4 ай бұрын
Very good question. I think it’s because when you apply it to a white wall, it allows you to see where the patch is. The ironic part of it, is that it dries white. So when you wanna go find the patch and send it again, you can’t see it. It should actually be the other way around.

Add water to make it glide on easy and not dry out. That stuff comes way too thick
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 10 ай бұрын
Never tried that… except when nearing the bottom of the container when it starts to dry. Adding water helps add life! However, it’s usually good practice to NOT add anything to products. In this case, dealing with wall filler or Drydex patching compound, adding water can help make the product apply better.

Isn’t it still getting exposed to oxygen on the putty knife?😮 What’s the difference other then preference
@TrustedHousePainter
@TrustedHousePainter 5 ай бұрын
The difference is that only the small amount on your putty knife is being exposed. Only using what you need on the putty knife preserves the container full of putty. Plus it helps reduce getting dried chunkies in the container from constant use.

My container doesn’t say “stir thoroughly”. It’s ready to go the minute you open the lid. Yes, working with two putty knives saves material and the can from drying out. Also prevents hard chunkies from your putty knife contaminating the putty in the container.
