Hey guys! I have a fun tutorial for you today that I think you will love! A few weeks ago I put up a sewing tutorial on making your own journal or book cover, and today I have another one that involves more quilting and cuteness! This is another great project to get you started quilting, and it’s a super fun way to make those ugly text books and composition notebooks much more exciting!
Supplies:
12” x 17” Backing fabric**
12” x 17” Batting**
Several fabric squares with the same dimensions. I’m using 2.5” squares from the mini-charm Gooseberry line by Moda.
Soft measuring tape
Scissors
Spray Basting (I like 505 Temporary Fabric Adhesive)
Rotary trimmer (I like this one: Olfa Splash 45mm Rotary Cutter)
Self Healing Cutting Mat (I have a Fiskars 18”x24” light blue mat)
Clear Acrylic Ruler
Coordinating thread (I’m using Aurifil 50wt natural white)
Straight pins (I like glass head straight pins)
Sewing machine
** If you are measuring for your own book add 2” to the height and 2” to the width of your book so that you will have some leeway in trimming. Later you will trim your finished quilted piece 1” taller than the height of your book, and 1.5” wider than the width.
I hope you enjoy it! Make sure to tag me if you use this tutorial to create your own projects!
I hope this helps inspire and encourage you all in your homeschooling journey as well!

I would suggest adding a narrow fabric loop to hold a pen. Maybe take one more mini square, fold it in half, open it up and fold both sides into the fold, and then fold in half again before stitching along the fold. Insert this loop when sewing around the exterior edge.

LOVE how precise and neat the completed book cover turned out. Your video makes me want to learn how to operate a sewing machine so I make things customised to my needs and rely on purchasing something that does not work. I am impressed with the precision and steadiness you demonstrated. Being a painful perfectionist this was a a satisfying tutorial to watch for entertainment and to learn from. I don’t know anything about sewing machine or sewing related, but you this look extremely easy. I can use these covers for my expensive text books. I was search for book covers like the one you made on Amazon and etsy, and boy they are extremely expensive ranging from $25 to $50. Thank you, Many wishes and best regards to you and your family, From Edmonton AB,

Sorry! Not sure which part didn't work, but maybe you need to give a little extra width due to the spiral rings.
@cristinareiser5447
@cristinareiser5447 5 жыл бұрын
Erica Arndt It has nothing to do with your directions, more with my sewing skills and measuring. It was a little big and too floppy. It might work when the planner is full and chunky though. 😀

Hey Erica! Another great idea! I wonder...what are the pros & cons of approaching this project as a QAYG ???
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 2 жыл бұрын
I think you could do a QAYG if you really wanted to, but I would probably sew the rows together first, otherwise you would have to stop your seams 1/4" from each end to add the new square each time. That sounds like too much work to me, so I think traditional piecing would be easier for this patchwork layout. So I probably wouldn't do QAYG unless you want to make it more scrappy like this potholder: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsyeZJZ8t8urc4k.html

With something this small would you think it would be okay just to use straight pins to hold the batting in place?
@erica_arndt

Possibly, I tend to like wonder clips for binding because it's kind of bulky :)

I know this video is super old but do you like that cut and press mat? I have limited space and am considering getting that in lieu of a full on ironing board, or is there a better option? I already have a normal self healing mat. TIA ❤️
@erica_arndt
@erica_arndt 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I LOVE IT! I have a new ironing board now and love that one too, but the cut n press mat is great! Especially for quilting, it's a bit denser than regular ironing boards so I think it helps give you flatter seams. Here's my new DIY Ironing Board: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oa-inaSa3cWaloE.html

+Moe Butler This one took about 2.5 hours to complete, but I think it depends on if you sit down and do it all at one time, or if you're sewing between other activities in your life :) I use a JUKI G-210 and LOVE IT!

Could you put an elastic and button on before you stitched the whole project together? I can't see why it wouldn't work but just thought I'd ask in case there is something I'm not thinking of.
