Path sensitization is a method used in digital circuit design to detect and diagnose the source of a fault in a digital circuit. The idea behind path sensitization is to isolate a particular path or set of paths within a circuit and to apply test inputs to these paths to determine if they are working correctly.
The process of path sensitization involves two main steps:
Fault modeling: In this step, the fault model is defined and the set of paths in the circuit that are associated with the fault are identified.
Path activation: In this step, test inputs are applied to the circuit such that the set of paths identified in the fault model are activated.
The outputs of the circuit are then compared with the expected results to determine if the activated paths are functioning correctly. If there is a difference between the expected and actual outputs, this indicates that there is a fault in the activated path.
Path sensitization can be used to diagnose a wide range of faults in digital circuits, including stuck-at faults, transition faults, and bridging faults. It is a powerful technique for fault diagnosis, as it allows the designer to focus on a small subset of the circuit and to quickly identify the source of a fault.
However, it is important to note that path sensitization is not a foolproof method and may not be able to detect all types of faults in a circuit. In some cases, multiple paths may be activated, making it difficult to determine which path is causing the fault. Additionally, some faults may not be detectable by this method, and other techniques may need to be used to diagnose these faults.
