A recording from a lecture Thorsten Chlupp gave in Anchorage, Alaska on April 22, 2011 in the Alaska Center for Appropriate Technology (www.ACAT.org) educational series "On the Path to Net Zero Energy". With a great passion for building science, his focus over the last years has been to develop high performing building systems with integrated renewable energy systems with a strong focus on solar and annual heat storage.

Thank you for posting this very informative talk, being at 41deg south latitude(Australia) obviously will need to modify this for the climate since it isn't Alaskan climate but very informative. Wished there was more builders/designers such as yourself. Just had to always remember you were talking Farenheit temps as I kept getting confused with Celcius.

Will be really interesting to scale this huge hot water tank for warmer climate. Very interesting solar system. I'm watching your video over and over again, and always finding something new.

Very good presentation !!! Lot of new information learned and lots of inspiration. What happened during the summer ? Is there are need for cooling the house?

What was the per square foot cost of the client's house Mr. Chlupp built?

@estqwerty Thanks, glad there was something interesting for you. I converted the system to drain back, problem solved. In my climate with proper design there are no issues with overheating. An evaporation pond in front of the main window provides natural passive cooling in the summer. Best - TC

41:38 Temperature/Thermal Energy is essentially just the amount of vibration in a molecule. That molecule hits other molecules and they begin to vibrate also, and gradually this vibration creates a gradient towards areas with less vibration (cold). Molecules are not actually moving through the wall in any major fashion. Insulation works because it is largely air, and there are very few molecules for each to bump into, so collisions are happening at dramatically lower rates. The reason a simple air space doesn't work is because air tends to rotate when one side is a different temperature, and we get the highest energy air crossing the space and then touching the cold wall, or convection. Aerogel is the best insulator on the market because it has the highest % air, while still preventing any air movement.

17:59 Stating the energy demand as a per square foot, rather than a per external area is incorrect. As is said later on, square or even octagon buildings, have higher sqft to external area ratios and are intrinsically more efficient.

have you looked at using solar hot air collectors on exterior walls? something such as solarwall is doing?

mnminnmn - heating air would require a MUCH larger volume of air than that house could contain, to store the same amount of energy as his multi thousand gallon water tank...

2:01:00 Ugh. Hydrogen? And then he follows with this comment on Geothermal "how much energy does it produce for how much is put in?"

He has a fireplace but no heating system. Okay, then. My family had that 50 years ago in a very cold climate. They needed nothing else described here, so I guess that means they were even more efficient than net-zero and carbon-neutral. In fact, this must mean that nearly all of those Amish homes I have seen in Pennsylvania and Ohio qualify as well, even if they are 7.5 ACH50, except maybe the oil or gas lamps. The best thing the folks here could do for both cost control and comfort is not live in Fairbanks.
