Love PF2 as a system - it's the best I've played BUT, the Achilles heel has always been that the books are badly laid out. ALSO, get a flippin hyperlinked PDF sorted. Apart from that, they needed to lose the OGL so there is that as an upside.

Partial boosts do serve a purpose in that they keep players from slamming all their ability boost points into a single stat. If my strength is at a +4 already I may be encouraged to put points toward a lower stat to gain a larger benefit. I've not played with any of the new PF2e remaster rules yet, but I'd bet it still works to keep player builds better balanced.

I still think it's to keep some measure of backwards compatibility.
@voinuppla

I don't think it's about backwards compatibility. More likely it is to keep the power progression the same, without rebalancing all Monsters LVL 5 and up. That would be a massive undertaking without any benefit to Paizo. Probably in PF3e?

The ability score makes sense. P2e’s math is VERY tight. Making it too easy to get +5 early could tilt the math in pcs favour.
@IcarusGames
@IcarusGames 7 ай бұрын
I get that, I'd just prefer the mechanics to be expressed as "you can't get +5 until level X" instead of having the useless partial boosts.
@Captainpigraven
@Captainpigraven 7 ай бұрын
@@IcarusGamesI understand. I’m curious as to how you would phrase it to make it simpler to understand? Because “you don’t add a +1 until character level 10” isn’t going to apply to everyone. Some will hit a +4 at level 5, which means they wouldn’t be eligible for a boost until level 15. Other attributes will just be getting their +4 at level 10, and not eligible to bump again until level 20.
@oiman5733
@oiman5733 7 ай бұрын
@@CaptainpigravenI saw someone's post (or comment) on the subreddit and they suggested that it could require two boosts to increase a +4 to +5 at 10th level (i.e. two boosts at level 10 go to one attribute score).
@Captainpigraven
@Captainpigraven 7 ай бұрын
@@oiman5733 I’m already confused. So at level 10 you have to spend two of your four boosts just to raise your +4 to a +5? Do you get to carry over/save a boost from level 5 to make that happen? Because otherwise you’re shorting the character one ability boost in another attribute. Or are you suggesting you spend the fourth boost from level 5 (the 1/2 boost, formerly known as as a 19) on another score instead? That way you’d be spending four boosts on 3 scores at level 10. But you’re still screwing yourself, right? Because what if you were only interested in raising four scores total throughout your career? It’s not really a big deal. I agree half a point sounds dumb, but it’s also easy to understand. When Anton said he wished it was replaced, I nodded my head. But the truth is I’ve seen a bunch of ideas bandied about but none of them seem inherently obvious or easier to understand than just…half a point. I do think a simple table could easily get it done. But that’s yet another table for something otherwise easily understood.
@strwrbttlfrnt
@strwrbttlfrnt 7 ай бұрын
@@Captainpigraven it wouldn't shortening an attribute because instead of halfway you would be getting a +1 which is better then getting nothing at all is this minmaxing yes but I see no harm in doing it if certain characters already have a +5 at level 10 and you only let it happen at level 10 it wouldn't break the game in anyway

I understand your point on alignment for PCs, it never made sense to box a human player in an axis system. But for monsters it made mechanical things a lot easier and made "at a glance" evaluations of cosmological placement easier. The problem maybe was the massive reliance on cosmological axioms for material problems. The dual holy/unholy and vital/non vital thing seems much less elegant. Still, maybe I'm just too old! 😅
@IcarusGames
@IcarusGames 7 ай бұрын
I don't know if its a more new school mindset, but I rarely consider a monster's published alignment when using it. I go based on what looks cool visually, what has interesting mechanics, and then what I think will work for the story. If I'm filtering monsters by criteria, it's usually by level and then a tag like "undead" or "demon" and very rarely by alignment.
@Captainpigraven
@Captainpigraven 7 ай бұрын
@@IcarusGamesJust about every monster has at least a couple lines talking about behavior, which is sort of what the alignment tag was mostly used for as a shorthand by GMs. Personally I think reading the section itself will suffice.

Hey dude love the video, great breakdown of the Remasters, but as someone who listens to KZfaq through headphones regularly this video’s audio was slightly off putting as 90% of it is coming through just my left earpiece and it isn’t my headphones as I checked out two other videos before typing this comment out. I've only read 4e, not had the chance to actually play it unfortunately. I've been a big fan of pretty much everything I've read of it though, and would frequently lift things from the 4e system for my 5e games.

Heartily recommend you try a small run - yes it has strong focus on tactical encounter mechanics - but it's still a fantasy RPG and if adventures are run with plots, intrigues, NPC interactions - it makes the encounters all the more poignant. 4e's advantage over PF2e is streamlined design and simplicity. @@IcarusGames
@thorinbane

It's made by the same designer, it's a tactical wargame, actually both are. Skill system in pf2 is better but still too compressed. But at least it has multiple levels of training, unlike D&D 4e... I have played wargames and will play them over 4E and now pf2 because it so simplified already.

the partial boosts is core to the design and math of the game, since the math of the game was designed with it in mind removing it would completely throw the math off. I dont like it either but I can understand why it is still there.

I completely agree that partial ability boosts are a terrible design idea. It is completely necessary to restrict ability boosts beyond +4 to keep the balance that PF2E is so famous for, but there was surely a more elegant way to do it. The partial ability boost feels very much like it was introduced solely for compatibility with Legacy options, and it is a lot of unnecessary complexity for that one purpose.

I just got the first two remastered books as a Christmas gift and they are on their way from eBay. I looked at the pdf for the previous monster book and have reservations about that part of the game as compared to D&D monster manual. I plan to use pathfinder to publish my world and am worried that the remastered version will require too many changes to monsters and kingdoms. In particular I'm concerned about dragons as I have a dragon empire that takes up 1/3 of a continent and Pathfinder doesn't appear to have anything similar to Dragonborn people. Can anyone give me insight on this?

The layout is locked to a baseline. Good for a nice even horizontal alignment. However someone just couldn’t leave a gap at the bottom of a column, so you get widows/orphans everywhere. Sigh… However my HUGE gripe is they used InDesign for the layout and nothing is linked in the PDF! WTH!? That right sidebar would be amazing if those sections were links to jump around! But NOPE! Can’t have you paying $20 for a PDF and include links. Grrrrr……

It's not really relearning the game at all though. The core resolution mechanics are the same. Unless you're playing a witch, and less so a wizard or cleric, it's a near identical game with just a list of name changed options that are pretty easy to look up.

@@TheRulesLawyerRPGI’m going to push back here a bit to both of you. While I agree it’s not some insurmountable task, learning a bunch of new terminology, especially for spells and the like, is definitely taxing and rather arduous. I think minimizing that required effort does an injustice to an objective approach. For something that isn’t supposedly that tough or “re-learning the system”, I noticed not one PF2 content creator who covered the remaster changes over the last week got everything 100% right. I’m not chastising here, only pointing out that if you content creators can’t get everything after going over it with a fine-toothed comb, why do you think it’ll be any easier for most other people? Ronald, you yourself spent every video referencing the laborious task of going through everything to recognize all the changes. But I do think there are different frames of reference for the narrative. Both of you seem to suggest that the 1% or 2% of changes is to the actual gameplay MECHANICS only. But I’d argue that the verbiage changes are every bit as much of a change, even if the mechanics of those spells, feats, etc., don’t actually change. It’s still a matter of “it is what it is”, because ultimately all this had to happen. I just think it’s interesting that for every PF2 content creator-and I’ve watched all of them-profusely insisting that the changes are not many, everyone has been tripped up, and usually by different things from one creator to the next. Even Mark Seifter missed things in most of his videos.
