Something to carry water in & a metal cup to make a beverage or cook in....surely you don't need to spend big amounts of cash to sort out this bit of your bushcraft gear?
The Pathfinder Canteen Set is not the most expensive, or the cheapest - but is it any good? After a couple of years of using it almost everyday, here are my thoughts on this item.

The first thing you do when you get one of those set ups is to take a circular saw with an aluminum oxide blade and cut a big hole in the center of the stand so the flame can actually come up and touch the bottom of the mug .....and also install 4 number eight bolts with nuts to give yourself another quarter of an inch in height on that stand.... which means the mug sits up a quarter of an inch more which allows the flames to touch the bottom of the cup and then spread around the edges and you’ll get much faster boil times

No you don't. Turn the stove upside down and put 2 metal pegs or bend a "V" shape wire as a stand. It becomes a windscreen for an Alcohol stove Trangia type, a wood stove and Esbit Solid fuel. It boils my 700ml cup much faster. By keeping the grill untouched, it hold the twigs much safer than starting a fire on bare ground. No risk on burning the forest down

You can easily bend the tabs slightly on the cup handle catch so it does not slide loose. It will provide enough tension to hold in place. There are KZfaq videos about this.

I finally bit the bullet and splashed out; $97.oo cad (58.14 PoundSterling) on the Pathfinders 32ounce (4 cups) Water Bottle & a lid with a 25 ounces (3 cups) Stainless steel Cup ...(no bag, no fish mouth opener, no stand) I hope I don't regret my purchase. My Vet buddy gave me his miltary canteen set 10yrs ago, and I love it.

I agree with you on the canteen fire stand, though it does help if you put it in the coals for a solid base. The one thing I like about military kidney shaped canteens are they can't roll away from you.

The stand is awsome, you are supposed to put it directly in the fire and build a bed of coals around it, put the cup on top or grill directly on top of the stand. And a trangia fits also perfectly underneath while the stand uses no extra space in the pack.

Thanks Neil, for a well thought out, and honest appraisal of the pathfinder canteen set. Tis very easy to become overwhelmed by new, and often high tech kit. Your guidelines of value for price have long served the online Bush-craft community well, please continue the honest evaluations .. Cheers 🙂

I enjoy your informative and practical videos. I bought the set a few years ago for a back up when we travel by car. I was hoping to do more short day hikes, but between asthma and knee problems I haven't followed through, so never used the kit. The canteen itself is great and serves as an additional water supply. I also picked up the canteen shop bag that attached to a backpack.

Looks like a very good buy .. nice review .. thanks 👍😊. Would love to get one .. BUT .. I currently have so many Water Bottles and such (dating from personal issue in the 70's) that another 😨 .. would have to find a way to smuggle it into Home Base under the Beady-Eyed Radar 😊. The Stove / Burner Windbreak Thingamajig could be made to work like the standard issue by drilling some holes and using a wire support (I use Stainless Steel Bicycle Spokes for similar projects). Perhaps the Manufacturers could look into this.

Hi, I own a Pathfinder Canteen kit. I agree with you. The cup cup flipped on me a couple times. Don't need to tell you that I was pissed. I got rid of the original cup and replace it with a butterfly handle cup. I love the wide mouth because my MSR Mini work water filter fits perfectly. I flip the stove upside down. I use a Trangia knockoff inside. With 2 metal pegs across it, it hold the cup. The stove serves as a windscreen. You could put an Esbit solid fuel and also start a mini fire inside the stove while still upside down. With the modifications that I've done, the canteen set fits my need better. Just sharing my experience.

I have just invested in the TBS billycan set, which is basically a copy of the round section Pathfinder set. It includes the bottom cooker part, the cup and the bottle. It cost £48 and I got a really well made molle carry bag off eBay for £5.88. The TBS has measurements stamped in, so you can always see them, the bottle’s lid is attached but easy to take off. The whole thing is carefully designed, the bail for the cup allows the lid to be taken on and off, the lid doesn’t need slots in it, like others do. I haven’t used it yet, but bought it after watching quite a few reviews. I also have the British Army BCB crusader set, which I really like, this is slightly lighter, I have the 2nd version of the BCB, but have the original steel cup instead of the lighter aluminium one, that will account for the extra weight- it’s built like a tank!🤣😁. I got the TBS set, partly because I just like different mess tins etc, as I love cooking, and because my Firebox stove has a round “cut out” section specially for Pathfinder cups and bottles, which makes it extremely efficient. If I’m going for a walk and am just making a brew or warming soup, I would take my extremely efficient Swiss Army Volcano stove or my British Army BCB Crusader, but for an overnighter, then it would be the Swiss Army Volcano for brews and a mess tin or either TBS set or Crusader or just my Trangia 27 with kettle. Choices, choices!😩😁😂🤣

Solid kit, though I may have a different version because when I flip the stove over for cooking with tabs and use the fish mouth spreader for a trivet I don't get the balance issue £100! What the.... oh it's a Keith, yes they are truly awesome. Just don't tell the Mrs I have both, shhhh, both are great kits but titanium wins as I get older. 288g for mug, bottle and lid. Add a bushbox ultralight 74g and your on to a winner.

I used to have something similar to that stove that is sold as Swedish Army stoves and with the the bottom bit you say is useless is good on those to hold the spirit burner and gets hot quick. Weighs a bit more I think but worked for me at the time.

They are a good bit of kit. I have the bottle kit myself, same basic thing 32oz ss bottle, nesting cup and stove and its great. I also agree that the stove part is not too hot, for the bottle as well. I prefer to carry a proper twig stove (firebox nano) instead of that. But the bottle/nesting cup are bombproof and i love em.

Nice review. In my limited experience its always better to pay a bit more for the high quality item that lasts years rather than the cheaper item that doesn't. Better for your wallet in the long run and better for the environment etc. There are loads of such examples. I remember buying my very first leatherman wayy back when they launched the first one, I found it hard to spend that money at the time - especially as I was a student at the time. But I did, and 20 years later - or more - I still have it and it is close to perfect bar my use. Cheaper €20.00 knock off multi tools are simply not as good. Buy high quality and buy once imo. Quality will last a lifetime.

Nalgene bottle and 0.6 to 1 litre titanium pot. Cheaper, MUCH lighter, can be used with a greater range of stoves, better bottle, better mug. The only thing it won’t do is nest as well and that’s only important if you have to carry it in webbing pouches.

This video is four years old so perhpas my comment is a bit weird here but you're supposed to take pliers and adjust the little hooks that hold the locking bit so it will be tighter and won't come undone when moving it around. I really don't understand Dave's persistence with the stoves. Literally no one likes them. I have the bushopot and the stove is just useless. The new canteen cup has d-rings on top of the handle so you can run a stick through it and create a longer arm.

At the risk of me being "THAT" guy... What makes it the best water bottle you've ever used? It's a water bottle, it's job is to hold water. I've used the same plastic squash bottle for the gym for over a year now. This is a revamp of the US bottle system, the most noticeable difference being the wider mouth. I've had my 58pat bottle since before getting out over 20yrs ago and use it for bushcraft camping and days out, it just works. DC has cashed in on bushcraft and shiny kit syndrome... very successfully too.
@greencraft4783
@greencraft4783 5 жыл бұрын
No worries. It reminds me of the old 44 patt water bottle. I have had my 58patt bottles since the 80's and like them a lot. This one is even easier to fill, to keep clean and it has the added bonus of being able to boil water in it too if I have too. They have all cashed in on bushcraft- Ray, Lars, Dave, etc...the only exception is Mors. Dave seems to be doing well at the moment, he seems to have a very strong work ethic, so good luck to him.

@Trailtraveller

Yes it is possible. But you have to clean your cup very very good, otherwise your drinks/food tastes very bad. Scrubpads with soap. This char option is also called for the bottle. My advise (for what it is worth) do not do this !! Food/Drink holders needs to be only for food/drinks. I know people who tried this and ending up throwing away the bottle.

Good review as ever Neil. I know that's not your intention but you haven't convinced me to buy one of these though. I know it's a 5Cs thing, but I'm not convinced on the value of boiling water in a heavy metal canteen (is that a band :-)?) Strikes me that it's more convenient to do so in your cooking pot or metal cup. Do you reckon it gives you sufficient advantage to justify the weight?
@greencraft4783
@greencraft4783 5 жыл бұрын
Tbh, Dave, it is tough justifying the extra weight and if I was on a long haul, I would probably take a lighter bottle. But this lives in my daysack with a few other well chosen items, so the weight is not a massive issue. As a "just in case" item having a bottle you can boil water in , to me, makes sense, water can be gathered in my millbank bag, filtered straight into the bottle and then boiled, so less links in the contamination chain.

I'm in my sixties and I've never had the need to boil the contents of my water bottle, in fact I've only been using a filter for under a year so there is no advantage, for me, to carry a stainless steel canteen. I boil water in my Crusader cup or pot to make coffee and cook my meals and I think that one boiling is sufficient. Modern equipment "needs" are as much to do with fashion as necessity ( a piece of wire isn't as 'sexy' as a fish mouth spreader). Maybe we should work on the principle of carrying 11 C's, the most important one being a Credit card. All the best.
