Professor Marc Potenza, Yale University: "What are the boundaries of addiction - on pathological gambling". A Stockholm Psychiatry Lecture held August 24 2011 at Karolinska Institutet. More lectures at / psychiatrylectures
Synopsis:
Pathological gambling is currently categorized in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) as an "Impulse Control Disorder Not Elsewhere Classified." There has been debate in the field as how best to classify pathological gambling and other impulse control disorders, with some people viewing the disorders as obsessive-compulsive-spectrum disorders and others as behavioral addictions. The presentation will focus on data from the past decade that has prompted the DSM committees to propose moving pathological gambling together with substance use disorders into a category of addictive disorders. Specifically, epidemiological, clinical, genetic and neurobiological data on the relationships between pathological gambling and other psychiatric disorders will be presented, with a focus on the close relationships between pathological gambling and substance dependence disorders. Information on how conceptualizing pathological gambling and other impulse control disorders might inform prevention and treatment strategies for these conditions will be discussed.

The real boundaries are other people getting tired of it. Some are saved in time or temporary by some hard stops that happen like no money, no food, no home.

By the way smarty, isn't there some clinical evidence that suggests that lithium may be effective for pathological gambling (especially if co-morbid with bipolar disorder)

Hello, give me a minute to introduce *BITCOIN* , *BITCOIN MINING* (Cryptocurrency terms) to you. (It’s way better than gambling) Pay attention, don’t be distracted, Bitcoin is a currency, I go again Bitcoin is an online currency, better said Bitcoin is a Cryptocurrency. Just as $1 is equivalent to €0.89 so is $1 equivalent to 0.00011 Bitcoin.

if its controlling your life Louie then you may want to stop. as long as you can pay your bills and take care of buisness it's not a bad addiction. if you cant save money and end up homeless then you got a wicked addiction

Get to the fucking point bro. I know 7 languages, but have no degree. I have pathological gambling. The point is that the sick gambler wants to ALWAYS win. I just finally accepted that I'm never going to win and even if I do win, I lose things of far greater value than money. Gambling is just plain wrong anyway.

not to mention if you are a believer in karma, then gambling is probably thee most rotten thing one can do. i have a twin brother who is pathological gambler as well, and what you said, "the sick gambler ALWAYS wants win" is so true. I truly see gambling as a form of bad karma, which is why i do not partake.
