Patient remains awake throughout kidney transplant in world's first

Transplant surgeons at Northwastern Medicine have performed the first known awake kidney transplant in the United States. The patient, 28-year-old John Nicholas of Chicago, was able to watch in real time as surgeons removed his old kidney and inserted his new one. Instead of using general anesthesia, which is most common for kidney transplants, doctors used a single-spinal anesthesia shot which is similar to what’s used during cesarean sections. This new option may open the door to increase access to transplantation for patients who are high-risk to undergo general anesthesia, while also decreasing the length of a transplant patient’s hospital stay.

Completely agree that less is more. Unfortunately very few patients will accept this and want the maximum done, despite the higher risks and worse outcomes.

Not only was the patient awake. His sub.conscious Mind was too. Unlike Anesthetic. For the appropriate patient there could be a significant reduction in Rejection and much higher Recovery rates. Less drugs, less bedtime. It would be interesting to know the Theater Teams opinion on how it changed their usual job.
