On 30 June 1960, as he sat listening to King Baudouin of Belgium deliver his address to the assembled dignitaries in Léopoldville on the Congo’s independence day, the new prime minister, Patrice Lumumba, became increasingly agitated, scribbling notes furiously.

I saw a man of great courage, intelligence, and love for his people. As a fellow African, I am deeply hurt that the Congolese people failed him, and indeed this great man was the change they needed. I can barely get through this video knowing how Leopoldo of Belgium murdered my fellow African brothers and sisters, and what nerve of the nephew/colonizer to reject the truth. African youth should be taught about such history. I'm a young South African man and I believe in a united Africa. Men like Mr Lumumba are heroes and I wish their visions for Africa can live through us and into the future. The whole continent is lead by pensioners and we are very grateful for what the earlier generatons have done for us but if you look at the wealthiest people in our continent it's these same pensioners who hold all the wealth. It's no coincidence. We need new leaders to come up from our youth. Leaders who will not conform to the corrupt systems that have been established. Leaders who want unity and prosperity for our people. One thing is for sure is that such documentaries will spark that flame. #africa #unitedafrica #unitedstatesofafrica

@@carlinkag2525 Thank you for you comment brother. Only about 5% of black South African youth go to university so you are part of a very lucky few. Not to mention, how many out of that 5% will be lucky enough to study a course on African history and African leaders.. Very few. My point is that the majority of Africans don't have access to nearly enough information about our history and geopolitics to make wise enough decisions to put the right leaderships in place to develop our continent

the Soviet Union did a very good job of honoring Patrice Lumumba by establishing the Patrice Lumumba People's Friendship University in Moscow Russia in the 1960s. Kudos to the Russians who were decades ahead in honoribg this bright guy form Africa..may his sacrifice of offering his life for his homeland bring fruit in the emancipation of Africa.

Even though I saw this video when it was just released 18 hours ago but I kept on ignoring to click it. Since KZfaq know that I watch almost every video released on this channel it kept on bringing it to my play list then finally I have just finished watching it. The reason why I was dodging it is because every time i watch or listen to Lumumba's story it breaks my heart and I end up becoming so angry. The way he was killed was brutal, and looking at all those that took part in this and reasons why they did it even makes me more angry.

This brother here reminds me so much of Malcolm X. Two erudite, uncompromising brave cats. Who were willing to risk their lives on behalf of their people. Lumunba, like Malcolm, had to know that those speeches that they made( the chickens coming home to roost.And the one that Lumunba made before the Belgium King would cause them some detriment. But the veracity of the subject to them was more important than the penalty that they would incur. Even if the penalty was death, I call that medal of honor kinda brave. Where you're willing to risk your life for your fellow man. There is no more braver individual on earth in my opinion, than somebody willing to do that.

Rip Lumumba, Father of a nation that almost realized it's greatest potential. Instead the powers that be used another African to take down an African. Lumumba's story always leave me bitter and upset because the very same people that plotted against him are the same people today that continue to milk the Kongo for it's resources. I cannot understand why President Tshisekedi and former President Kabila did business with Belgium, France, and the US from a position of servitude. If these leaders are so blind that they can only see the lining of their own pockets instead of national growth then they are the ones who deserve to be executed. As someone from the U.S., I am deeply ashamed of how we boast of our anti-imperialist and democratic identity, yet so often stand in favor of colonialism and dictatorship. The overthrow and killing of Lumumba is one example of many. He was responsible for overthrowing Democratically elected Iranian leader,installed the Shah to be a puppet for the West,Iran has not recovered from that. Esseinhower also supported a coup in Guatemala to overthrow leftist leader and install a puppet so they can profit from their citrus fruit plantations there. When the Bay of Pigs invasion happened in Cuba during the early months of Kennedy administration,it had been the Eisenhower regime that had recruited Cuban exiles,trained them to plot the invasion. Both heroes. I feel the same way about Kwame Nkrumah, Thomas Sankara, Fidel Castro, and the Afro-Cuban soldiers that helped liberate Namibia from colonial apartheid rule. Incredible historical figures that should never be forgotten.

😢😢😢😢 💔 I never really knew about Patrice until I started watching few videos. Watching this today really swelled my eyes with tears. I felt no fear but pure anger. How can any African leader fear the west or europe after knowing who Patrice was and what he stood for. Is Congo any better today ?. 😢😢😢😢

We celebrate our radical African revolutionaries and rightly so but we shouldn't forget that their revolutionary zeal and idealism is one of the reason why some African countries are so messed up...what if Lumumba didn't have great speeches but was boring and patient? Independence might have been delayed for five or so years allowing for the training of an officer Corp and civil service and that may have set Congo on the right track after all in the long run...Lumumbas zeal and charisma may have rallied crowds but people don't eat zeal and charisma....

Everyone who is the present leader is following in his footsteps….Innocent villagers forced to work horrendous hours in very unsafe mines ? One of the few figures in African history that seemed to be both a martyr and untouched by the corrupt nepotism that plagued so many. Some say he wanted to play both sides of those in the Cold War, but he urged for neutrality and I think he was genuine in that. I doubt he was the next Messiah by any means but his record seems less besmirched that so many of that region who chose to use the trust of the public to vie for just an ounce more of power, putting them higher than most of the other crabs, but still lingering, far away from the mouth of the barrel. His advocation for the unification of Africans, like so many others, was what probably led to his assassination. Africa is much more profitable to colonizers if horrors like Rwanda and such happen on an iterative enough basis such that every native is wrecked with paranoia and malnourishment. Hopefully, something will break that cycle.

I am so sad and angry, this frustration of a young educated man, trying to share the greater picture, a big vision of a great Africa, expecially Congo with all its huge natural resources. Looking at Ghana celebrating their independence, filled with hope for the independence of his own country, but instead ending up being killed brutally by your own people, your OWN. Worse than that, his friend Mubutu, the one he trusted and gave charge over the Army, ended up getting one with the West, doing this. I don't want to see or talk about Lumumba again, I have realized it makes me angry and sad

Very good video brother! Overrall very well done. Just a few hits and misses on some parts. The UN did in fact sponsor and support the katanga secession and even forbade other african nations from helping DRC or anything of the like. They also actively tried to disocurage any rightful claim lumumba had to the VP seat and were active in pushing for katanga to be on its own. Lumumba knew this and fearing for his life somehow escaped his home in the back of the truck because he feared the UN guards would soon turn to kill him. They even allowed and made sure his assassination would be done more easily. And I must state that Lumumba was NOT communist but just worked with the USSR because he needed weapons. He never mentioned or made reference to any communistic beliefs or ideologies. Eve the head of the USSR after his death admitted that Lumumba was not a communist but was playing the geo-politics game.

They did have a trial and found the culprits, including his ‘friend’ who betrayed him and took the presidency for almost 30 years. All that time, everyone, including Lumumba’s widow, knew he had done it. Unfortunately, the former president escaped to France or Belgium, but was tried in abstentions, and all found guilty.

As a Belgian, I am deeply ashamed of the actions of my country. A positive thing is that now this history is taught in schools, unlike in the past. I was lucky, I had a history teacher who explained us outside the curriculum. For Lumumba, he was a victim of his time, 1960 is the time when the American policy of containment of communism started. He might have been a bit naive, being a genuine politician did/does not work... The US and Belgium had no control over him, so he paid the price. Who knows what the DRC would look like now. I will visit the DRC to learn more about the country and be a tiny part in building a positive relation between our countries, we owe it.
