Why is everyone being so nasty? Ms Heaton is an American living in America she has the right to believe what she wants - without persecution. If you don't agree with someones spiritual belief you don't have the right to insult them. There are many atheist "preachers" - look at Ricky Gervais and Seth MacFarlane. They both have made ENTIRE tv shows about their beliefs and in every interview they are proud to say they are atheist, no one is stopping them or insulting them for it.
@niklaswassermann9971

Uh. Yes they are. And everyone has the right to question anyone's beliefs - it's this little thing called freedom of speech. And there's a humongous difference between atheism or harmless faith and actually taking genesis for granted. Genesis is a disproven horse shit fairytale and believing in it means fighting 200+ years of science, if you decide to do that, go amish. You do not deserve to enjoy the progress we have made.

jennerial methinks you need to look up the definition of “persecution.” KZfaq commenters expressing their reaction to her PUBLIC statements is not that. Lol I like how all these people already pooped on you about not knowing the difference between persecution, and freedom of speech. That was really dumb... also religious people hate atheists, we just speak and think about things in a reasonable way, based on what we know to be 99.99999% true about the world we live in, like seth and ricky, and they get called demons and liars and are accused of spreading poisonous ideas like treating each other as equals and and why to be a good person based on nothing more than your own desire to be treated kindly in return, as well as just spreading scientific knowledge about the world and yadda-yadda and we're all pretty much unanimously hated on by theists. I mean, to many preachers, we are top tier enemies to religion and the word of whatever god they grew up with.

After losing my faith around 13, all those questions went away, and the entire universe made a lot more sense. Why are we here? We got lucky. Why did i bust my ankle? Shit happens. I've always thought that humans invented "God" because of the indifference of nature to their welfare. The natural world doesn't give a shit about anyone. When it is cold outside it is cold for every living creature and they must deal with that. If one freezes to death, so be it. So humans couldn't stand that indifference of nature. They needed to have protection from it. So they created a concept called "God". Something they could get assistance from against the forces of nature. A protector. Every religious belief resonates from that desire to have protection from the forces of the natural world. Every single one. It was never really about "Why are we here?", it was always about "Who will help protect me?" From that idea of a protector came the idea of the creator. God is my protector. God put me here for a reason and cares about me. Nature doesn't give a shit but God does. And all the animals and everything else on the planet is stuff God gave to me to use for my own welfare. Without the idea of God, humans are helpless. Stuck in an indifferent natural world which scares them. God is the first imaginary friend of humans.

I'm not here to argue their logic, but they aren't all cut from the same cloth. Just as I know Muslim people who say that those who kill in the name of it aren't true Muslims. You can't use a blanket to say "you're all the enemy" for then you sink to the level of those who you proclaim to fight against. Try growing up and realising that not every one of a religion, group, race or whatever hates you because others of their kind do or that their books is evil. Try doing what you are fighting for, treat people with respect, equality and so forth, when they treat you the same. Of course fight against those who do want to attack, etc. But there are people in those groups you blanket who aren't against you. I see there is alot of mocking in the comments section. Many will mock me and this scripture. But maybe there is one person this will speak to. Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." So if you want to live a life of goodness you need wisdom that comes from God, not from entertainers or politicians, friends or even some family.. It's for our benefit to seek God and live a life pleasing to Him! His ways are higher than our ways. God always has our best interest at heart. Man's "wisdom" is not trustworthy. Proverbs 8:11 "For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it."

Religion, when it has the majority brings intolerance and attacks on non believers or attacks on others with a different religion. History proves this time and time again. Do we want the dark ages again, no we don't. Have a look at any country that is very religious or has its laws based on its religious doctrine, no tolerance and a un healthy view on gays and women. Some will even kill gays, jail women for being raped and keep secrets about child abuse instead of reporting it to the police. So no, religions don't know the first thing about keeping THEIR views to themselves and rather pray than actually help people directly. Developed countries, when you see census data are moving away from religions and their no evidence based claims and replacing it with critical thinking, science based logic and facts supported by evidence. Giving comfort and support comes directly from trained experts when its need, that actually makes a difference. Taking advantage of people when they are down to get them into your cult (which is what religion is, a cult with lots of members) and making them feel less worthy unless they yield and donate money is also another religious party trick......

@@alfonsonation Oh, it's a question of right? So if I find comfort believing in Santa Claus, nobody should care and I should be allowed to spew my beliefs around without anyone intervening? Heaton is not a nice person. Remember her involvement with the woman who was brain dead and her husband wanted her taken off life support and her parents did not? Heaton inserted herself in that and made that poor husband’s life hell. He and his wife had talked about the fact that if anything like her being on life support happened she did not want to be there. Her parent’s kept hoping she would come out of her coma but were very misguided because she was brain dead. The husband eventually prevailed after 7 years of being in the courts. Heaton was very outspoken about the fact that Terri Schiavo should be kept alive. An autopsy following her death showed she had massive brain injury and would never have recovered. Heaton made this poor husband’s life hell and in the end she was so wrong. She never apologized for that and I have never liked her since and refuse to watch anything she is in. Christians almost alway feel persecuted when god gets brought up and a few people speak up about how they feel the opposite.

The fact that they're talking a little bit over each other makes me happy. I know it's a bad habit and I try not to do it but sometimes I do bc my brain is working too fast and I always feel so terrible bc I know it's rude to people but it is coming from excitement and not from ego. When the other person just does it back and we just comfortably go at it back and forth without worrying about segues and whatnots it is a joy to me and I wish it was more relatable to people. I hate small talk. Seeing them do it (as much as I know I need to fix this bc it's rude) makes me feel a lot better about myself like see other ppl do this and it is sometimes ok and doesn't mean you're terrible. They seem comfortable with each other and it's ok sometimes to just be comfortable if the other person is vibing with you. My best of friends and I just talk on top of each other a lot but I'm realizing we are all somewhat abnormally intelligent (not a flex we got our weaknesses too but admittedly we're total nerds) and I wonder if our brains just do this as a byproduct of being extra altogether idk. Anyway was nice to see this.

Would you like to be as deluded as MLK Jr? Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Many progressives are religious. Most nobel peace prizes go to people who are devout in one religion or another. "Religion is good for good people and bad for bad people," journalist & author Chris Hedges. And the same applies to atheists, I might add.

@@brynawaldman5790 The difference is that any truly "devout" person is hindering the progress of science and most atheists don't. God didn't create jack shit, the big bang theory has been proven over and over enough for the "creation" discussion to have been over some time ago. Unfortunately, scientific consensus does not translate to a public understanding of it, same thing is happening with the topic of climate change right now. Most people prefer spouting their non-fact based opinions over listening to the few people that do have the facts, et voila, problems arise. Atheists are not exempt from being stupid, but the core concept of faith (believing in something you have no knowledge, understanding or proof of) promotes stupidity and regress because it often trumps the willingness to learn and understand where atheism at least has no impact on whether or not you are willing to listen to science.

@Mason Rued They can be mutually supportive, too. Read MLK's diaries. When he was 26 his house was bombed and Correta and their first baby were ok (he wasn't home) but he went into a panic over it. He prayed. He heard a deep male voice say that his family would not be harmed. I don't remember the exact words, but it's early on in the diaries. His family wasn't hurt. What he heard became true and it gave him strength (and I am not one of those people who think he was a minor god; I know about all the affairs he had; but he was a great leader, and he changed this country for the good in a way that no-one else could have done. He was a great man. Human and flawed and great.) Harriet Tubman was the most amazing person on the underground rr, and she made hundreds of trips to the south, and brought people back, never getting caught. Often it was noticed she would know when a place wasn't safe before the underground rr knew about it, because she prayed. If the slave hunters found a safe house she knew about it when it happened. She was a very religious Christian. Mind you; my personal take is that going into altered states can give a person information that might not be available otherwise. Atheists who do ayahuasca ceremonies with traditional shamans as guides get amazing breakthroughs, at times; like overcoming an addiction from just one ayahuasca experience. That's why I like the Chris Hedges quote so much; ethics matter more than cosmologies. I do believe religious people have sources of strength that we lack. I was raised atheist, but participated in Native American ceremony some, and learned a lot. A scientific explanation that wouldn't include a deity can be found in the work of biologist Rupert Sheldrake. Back to the faith giving strength stuff; don't you think it's real? Don't you think if people feared death less they could be more courageous in life (whether one believed in heaven or reincarnation or whatever).
