Our guest this week on The Old Man & The Three is the one and only Patrick Beverley (The Minnesota Timberwolves) and the interview does not disappoint. Topics include: The Los Angeles Clippers trading him to The Memphis Grizzlies, how he's helped build a winning culture w/ The Minnesota Timberwolves, people who call him crazy, why he believes he's underrated, how he doesn't get paid as much as other comparable players bc of his name, why he believes he should be considered for Defensive Player Of The Year and why Rudy Gobert (The Utah Jazz) shouldn't, the difficulty of guarding Luka Doncic (The Dallas Mavericks), why he shoved Chris Paul in The Playoffs, the ceiling of Anthony Edwards, why Karl-Anthony Towns is a hall-of-famer already and his feud w/ Russell Westbrook (The Los Angeles Lakers) and so much more.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN) and Tommy Alter today.

@@charliemack8585 My comments speaks from experience. Anyone who’s played the game of basketball, knows you can’t understate the value of a true competitor. Part of the reason guys like PJ Tucker, Marcus Smart, and Pat Bev can be such vital members of winning teams is that they don’t cheat the game. They play their hearts out, and leave little to be desired from an effort standpoint. If you can’t recognize that, than you are indeed, a casual.

Gilbert Arenas talks about this so often on his podcast: the reason why defensive players don’t get the appreciation is because even though you have a defensive mindset you’re still not stopping the hardens or KDs, but by you being on the court, due to the lack of your offense, you give those superstar and excuse to not play defense. So you’re essentially reducing hardens points for 30ppg to maybe 25ppg, and when harden is defending you on the other end, he’s keeping you to 8ppg without trying, you could essentially be playing 4v5 when you are not a scoring threat as they can just double team the offensive superstar…so it’s not a mystery why the league does not appreciate defensive players as much, simply put, playing defense well is not merely enough in the nba to stop the superstars while you being in the court gives them “rest” as they don’t have to work hard to defend you

Suns fan here, prior to the CP3 acquisition we ran through a lot of point guards...I coveted Pat Bev. Man is the definition of a dawg. He impacts the game in so many ways that don’t show up on the stat sheet. A player you love on your team and hate when you play against him.

Definitely one of my favorite interview so far from J.J. AND I understand the frustration with Pat about the pay scale with defense vs offense. But unfortunately truth is fans come to see Scoring not steals and blocks. Eventho those stats are apart of the game 🎯

Well it’s the fans fault.. too many players getting laughable contracts all because fans want to see them throw up a bunch of silly shots

@@blackconclave1962 agreed. I'm a fan of 90s basketball. Low scoring and defensive games. But I must admit the high scoring is entertaining at times.

That’s cool & all but fans come to see wins too so that’s where hustle & defense come into play. That’s the missing important piece

As a Clippers fan this was the best move for T Wolves since Jimmy Butler because Pat Bev gives them the same killer edge on the defensive side and that's all they needed since Jimmy Butler left

Seeing NBA players talk about basketball just shows how little the fans get to see on what goes into winning, and all the intangibles that are overlooked. Leadership on offense and defence, game IQ on both sides of the ball, work ethic, collaboration with other players, and dedication for your team.

Regarding the distinction between offensive and defensive players, I think the aesthetics of a ball going into a hoop is something that viewers are going to resonate with more. It's harder to notice how valuable the defensive aspect is. Two exceptions: Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace. Low offensive output but incredible defensive players who were stars and treated like such. Part of the difference: they both had noticeable aesthetics that distinguished them from other players: Dennis Rodman with the hair, tattoos, and eccentric behavior; Ben Wallace with the best afro in the business.
