Great interview. Thanks for doing this. Really agree with the description of (I'm paraphrasing here) "making games for people who like to play the same game over and over". I also enjoy super simple, only-two-rules type of (usually card) games too... both have their place.

I know, right? While minor factions and 2 new militant factions sound great, that may be the most intriguing and fundamental shift to Root gameplay. Consequences could be dire.

jsibleytube hey, thanks! For my equipment I use a blue yeti mic and a GoPro hero 7. Can’t speak for what the other two are rocking.

Nice interview video! I gotta agree that TTS has SERIOUS issues. It is way to over complex to use with non-intuitive controls and lacks a lot of simple features that would enhance playability (such as 2D view instead of 3D, better Zoom capability, etc.). Vassal would be a better platform or alternately (depending on Leder's internet site backbone) just build your module into a secure section of the site.

Having read up on some of the fan factions, the Hive Industries idea would be an amazing addition. Turtles and Bees for the expansion after next? :D

I so. want. a. bug. faction. I'm not sure it even really makes thematic sense, but hey if a mouse can fight a badger, I'm guessing scale isn't quite as paramount in the forests of root.

If They find a way to fix the 2 player on Root and be able to play with any faction...IM IN!!!! I love the game but I always feels that with low player count it is not the type of experience I expect and tends to be rather flat rather than inmersive.

I agree, strong native 2 player support would be huge. That said, the mechanical Marquise 2.0 has gone a long way in stabilizing the 2 player games between my wife and I.

My take away was that it was up in the air. Patrick is still evaluating if it's profitable enough to sink time into and his comparison was Scythe's big box which according to him, Stonemaier had said wasn't particularly profitable and Scythe has sold many more units that Root. I expect that so long as people continue asking about it they'll continue to consider it, especially if they reach what they consider "The End" of Root's development.

@@TheCardboardHerald I am siding more and more with NO Big Box idea. Because of the psycholigical effects that Cole was describing. Plus, looking at the components available in the core game plus the 4 playable expansions, The amount of components doesn't really require a single larger box. I am thinking that the modularity allows precisely to just mix and match as one desires, but drawing inspiration from the third party inserts, I think ideally the 8 factions fit in the base box and leaving the map boards aside in a different box (together with their respective components, for instance in the case of the mountain map), would suffice. Plus, the game mats simplify a lot that, then it's not necessary to take the cardboard maps from anywhere and instead just pull out a mat, take the box with the 8 factions with a custom insert and that's it. I wouldn't get a big box myself, but it would be a good idea for people who are fans of the game but do not own a copy themselves, maybe.

For a better scale, you should have used Hares, Mice, Squirrels instead of Rabbits, Mice, Fox.

There is a lot there and it’s obviously Leder’s flagship game now, but I think it’s not much different than LCGs or any number of other games with loads of expansions. Still, I see your point. Just for all faction content you’d need to buy the base game + 3 expansions and that doesn’t include extra decks, mats, 2 clockwork sets...
