Patrick Rothfuss, author of the "Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear," demonstrates his writing process as he composes a blog blog post for his Worldbuilders organization. He also talks a little bit about his fiction-writing. Part of our Wisconsin Writes series of videos designed to help students and teachers observe how successful authors write - dpi.wi.gov/wisconsin-writes - which includes an interview with Rothfuss as well.

i thought this was about his writing process not about worldbuilders.......i was really excited by this video till 1/3 of the way through.

It seems like he basically set up his computer then spent the rest of the video plugging the charity. That's fine, and I donate to Worldbuilders, but don't title the video "Pat Rothfuss's Writing Process."

Very misleading title. There is really no writing process here at all. This is the how-to-distract-yourself-from-writing-with-a-charity process. Great stuff, but not what the title promised.

Do you outline? How do you approach characters? What time of the day do you write the most? Do you have beta-readers? How do you approach the second/third draft? etc etc Don't tell me about geeks, and what we like, please, just tell us how you write your stories.....

He uses tons of Beta Readers. Like, more than usual. He comments about this in multiple other videos. He also, rewrites his books/stories multiple times to thin out the plot points and get specific details arranged in a way he enjoys.

You really do have to have a routine if you're going to make yourself write regularly. Full-time writing is self-motivated, which can be so hard :(

I realize this is a random question. I would like to build a bookshelf like the one Patrick has in my home office, and I don't know much about those sort of things. Can someone tell me what kind of brackets those are, where you can mount multiple boards on them?

I can't type on little dinky modern keyboards either! I gotta have the thick heavy keys that go clack-clack or it just messes with me. I did however find a gaming keyboard that not only feels like an older one, but also lights up. It's been my favorite one ever.

I'm used to Pat getting distracted, shame that no one seemed to bring him back to the original topic. Or, more likely, the video is nerd clickbait. Only thing I came away with is that Pat has a Dwarven Forge collection I'm pretty jealous of.

I don't know why all the complaints. He was quite clear his process is "go to the madness place; come back with writing"... sounds fair. I came really, really late to this party, like years late, and it's freakin' hilarious all the worrying about when book 3 is coming out. He said himself the story is finished, just needs polishing. He's capitalizing on his deserved reputation, and why not?

If your complaint is that he isn't directly "teaching" you how to write then you aren't listening at all to what he is talking about. His explanation of his charity and other things embodies his writing. He's teaching you quite a bit. Like any good professor, he's not holding your hand through the process.
