The affection between Patrick Stewart and Whoopie Goldberg is undeniable! I know Arsenio says at the end of the clip, "we'll be right back with Patrick and Whoopie" but this is all I had on the tape.

what I think everyone is forgetting is that this is 1993 not today. he is being respectful & interested & is totally unfamiliar with american culture let alone black culture. he isn't being a jerk he is being interested & I think his humor is missing on american TV

American culture has changed so DRASTICALLY within the past 10 years, that 1993 might as well be a million years ago.

There’s lots of black people in England. Damn she’s just another person.

What you talking about, there were many black actors in Star Trek and also Whoopi joined the series in 88, so I wouldnt say he werent familiar with black culture.

Sir Patrick is probably more familiar with American Black culture than a lot of people realize. I was privileged to know the late Chicago bluesman Eddy Clearwater; Eddy and his wife Renee told me of the time Patrick Stewart came by the house to visit, because he really wanted to meet Eddy. So they sat in the living room; Eddie played guitar and sang a song or two for Sir Patrick, who returned the favor by reciting a scene from Shakespeare for the two of them! Wonderful story, which I admire all the more because it showed that Stewart respected, and related to, Clearwater as a fellow creative artist, no condescension or patronization at all on his part.

Awww why did Arsenio not open the present 🎁?! Poor guy even said that it had some special meaning and all that lolll☺️ always loved Picard/ Guinan dynamic

Looks to me like Whoopi is uncomfortable and smitten, Patrick is oblivious and naive, and Arsenio is offended, in shock and maybe a little envious. A fascinating dichotomy between what was acceptable then and what's acceptable today.
@adamdemgar27987 жыл бұрын
On Star Trek, Guinan said, I think on more than one occasion, that her relationship with Picard was 'more than friends, more than family...' So, I was wondering if Whoopi and Patrick were close friends away from Star Trek, or if they were friends with each other before Star Trek? Or if it was like that character said said to Data in Time's Arrow, that 'Madam Guinan has discovered many personal friends...?'

The acknowledgement of concept and time should be considered for this clip. I'm cringing while watching some sections of this interview. In the late 80's and early 90's, I don't think you would have batted an eye to any of it. Doesn't make it right, but definitely a sign of how society was different.

@ssssroryssss2 It's sort of nice to know about other countries former leaders. I know Churchill, Thatcher, and Blair (even met him). Now if you would be so kind as to forget the name GEORGE W. BUSH from any American President's you might know, I would be forever thankful :)

I think he was just listing famous British people's birthdays matching the host and not American people, so he did not know the host shared a birthday with Abe Lincoln...so Whoopi just said to forgive him because he is British and doesn't know the American presidents' birthdays.

I find it funny we have to teach Patrick our racism. He was just trying so hard to fit in while still being a proud Englishman. It was for sure awkward.

What is Patrick Stewart talking about? He doesn't need to "teach Michael Dorn to talk in Standard English." Michael Dorn normally speaks in standard English, at least in the interviews on KZfaq that I"ve seen. He also talks in a General American Accent, too. You can clearly hear Dorn talking in a Standard American Accent and Standard English vocabulary and whatnot in this interview from 1987-1988. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z6ugfNRp2diVnmg.html Unless by "Standard English" he meant the Received Pronunciation used on the BBC, this doesn't make sense.
