This 1970 LS6 SS454 Chevelle was disguised as a 1971 model by the original owner to be raced as a 365HP in a slower class. According to the current owner and others who knew the car claim the entire car was paid for from drag race winnings. The car has been stored away and parked since 1989 and still retains its original window sticker, drivetrain, and protecto plate.

This car was ordered by a disabled US military veteran in a wheelchair. This is why it was ordered with bucket seats and no center console, made it easier to put his wheelchair in the car. He added the chrome on the driver side to keep his chair from scratching up the car. It still had hand controls on the steering wheel when it was purchased by the second owner.

It’s great seeing these barn finds. Most people don’t think they exist anymore, under the assumption people recognized their value and restored them, or sold them. But there are also a lot of personal stories here that prevent that from happening, either for sentimental value, or lack of $. For instance, I have a 63 340hp hipo split window I’ve had since 2005, in the family since 1980....and I just got started on the resto. On that note, Patrick, I have original photos and sales paperwork for a 68 RS Z28 and 70 LS6 my dad owned back in the day I’d like to locate if you can help. If anyone wants to see the period pics, I’ll scan them

Nice find. I had a Cranberry Red/white top/black interior '72 Chevelle Malibu convertable that had the 350 4bbl, bucket seat, console, horseshoe shifter, tach package, AM 8-Track stereo, (yes, I said stereo, it had 4 speakers) and air conditioning. All factory. My parents ordered the car that way. I don't remember what plant it was made at but the build sheet was under the butt cushion of the back seat inside the springs. By the time I got to it (late 80's) it was pretty much destroyed from mice and moisture.

Back in the 70's there was some sort of ruling in a drag racing sanctioning body which insisted that cars be current models. There was an article in Hot Rod Magazine showing a Camaro being reskinned to make it a later model. This SS seems to be have been disguised to do something similar.

Some of the early Turbo 400 trans, had a saftey override in it, at 5,500rpm, even with it manually in 1st, it would force shift to 2nd. It hit REALLY hard. I had a homebuilt '69 Nova with a 396 and turbo 400 in high school. Won alot of races due to that shifting.

Reminds me of my old 93 Z28 4-speed auto 2.73 geared car. From a roll I would go WOT and throw it into 1st gear at the same time and it would hit hard on the downshift. Most cars couldn't overcome that initial kick from that downshift. P.S. This doesn't work the same with 3.23 or numerically higher geared cars.

Since you're obviously a Chevelle fan, and, especially a fan of the 1970 model (as I am!), you should find a copy of the November/December 2018 issue of Vintage Truck Magazine. The cover truck is a cranberry red/white stripe 1970 El Camino SS. It's a highly optioned L-34/4 speed car/ truck. Just by being an El Camino SS makes it rare and interesting to me.

Me and a guy I know got a roller given to us he needed a doghouse for a wrecked 68 Malibu he bought we new where a gold 68 as el Camino had been sitting for years so we stopped to see if he'd sell the doghouse off it turned out to be his dad's car who had passed away in 81 he got it back from a shop missing the engine and trans he never found another 396 and four speed for it so it just sat on an old slab where a garage used to be until 2 years ago when we stopped he told us he wasn't willing to part it out and turned down a thousand for the doghouse but the longer we hung out talking to him I guess he decided he liked us because he told us before the night was over if we promised not to chop it up or part it out he would give it to us we went back and got it the next day the title was long since lost and was never switched out of his dad's name we stored it for a year and my buddy didn't want to put any time or money into it without having a title we ended up trading it for a 54 international 4x4 pickup to a good friend who paid for the lost title application to be filed by a lawyer and got a title for it he has since dumped a fortune in to it but body wise the car was solid after being soda blasted hes gonna have one sweet ride when he's done

The is one odd car. Everybody thinks rare is valuable. Most of the value of something rare is how cool It is or the demand for the piece. It is a ls6 but the way it was ordered new will always hold the value on this one down. Most collector's buy cars that check off all the boxes. This one only checks off 2 boxes. 1970 SS Chevelle and ls6. Just saying. Excellent Video Patrick as always.

what about those 4:10 gears, bucket seats and tire rubber on the rear quarter panels ??? those add value to many of us !

@@billycarpenter4740 yes 410 gears are cool. Be much cooler with a m22👍 Tan buckets with no console and column shift! Not cool and neither is the 10 different colors of tan the used in 1970. The rubber on the quarter means nothing. Very odd wierd car with no eyeball

Notice the absence of cowl grilles. While that in itself doesn’t prove it to be an LS6 car, it is definitely another characteristic of a real functional cowl induction car.

This would be easy to do. As you said, core support, grille, bumpers and headlights. However, you forgot about changing the 70 only (4 light) fender extensions to the 71-72 (2 light) pieces along with a little wiring, a minor oversight I'm sure. The giveaway for me, on this car, was the 70 only parking lights at the bottom of the front fenders. I'll bet this car earned it's keep as a street racer back in the day. I used to street race a 72 Malibu with 307 emblems on the fenders in the 80's. Back then, there was a "street stock" class at our local dirt oval. The rules were that you could do anything you wanted to the engine as long as you ran a stock block and heads with a 2bbl carb. The heads didn't have to come with your chosen block from the factory as long as they had a factory casting number (some well funded guys even ran over the counter aluminum heads) and the carb was normally a 2300 Holley. This is how I built the 406 in that Malibu. Since, especially on a dark back road at midnight, it's pretty hard to tell the difference between a 307 and a bored and built 400 small block when everything is painted Chevy orange, I made a boat load of money with that car and usually doubled it when my opponent (a.k.a. the loser) wasted an hour looking for a nitrous system that was never there. Nobody ever shined a light on the side of the block and saw the 3 freeze plugs, or, noticed the 9" Ford rear end. I still run into many of them at Sunday afternoon cruises etc. These days, they love to talk about how their car got walked by a 307 2bbl 72 Malibu. Maybe someday I'll tell them my secret...or not lol!

i had a buddy with a 70 duster that had an insane 340 in it he had to chain down too! lol! after a little work he did to it, he could never stop breaking factory engine mounts for some reason so chain up that beast! a lot of work to perpetrate a fraud, smh, cheaters and weasels who screw other people over are losers, whether they win or not! I used to work with some lazy guys that always tried ducking out of ,or avoiding work, funniest thing to me was,it looked like it took alot more effort for them avoiding the tasks, as opposed to just doing the work in the 1st place! lmao! stupid is as stupid does.i don't get it. thanks again. ☆☆☆

i would have kept the 70 nose and rear it’s more like he prob wrapped it around a telephone pole and happened to have a 71 nose available. you can see the wires for the pigtail for the extra headlight. the L doesnt always mean super sport options ive seen a lot of canadian chevelles documented fully without it . the protecto plate is the only way to really tell with the 70
