According to certain insiders, Patrik Laine wants a change of scenery, so could he be a fit with the Pittsburgh Penguins? Patrick and Hunter discuss that, what a trade would look like, and if the Blue Jackets would be willing to send a player like Laine to a division rival. Next, they have some fun and put the 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, and 2017 champions up against one another to determine who is the champion of all champions. Finally, it's game three of the Stanley Cup Final tonight, the boys give their thoughts on how the Panthers can take a chokehold on the series or how Edmonton can claw back.

I think the BlueJackets have to eat 1/2 of that Cap to trade him to any team.

Anywhere between 25/35% will get it done. We're still talking about Laine, a guy who scores at a pace of around 30 Goals per 82 Games played.
@romaliop
@romaliop Ай бұрын
Depends on where he goes and what they offer for him. There are certainly some teams who would rather eat the full cap hit than give back more assets. However, Columbus might also rather retain than take back less assets, because the extra 2x4M isn't really that big of an issue for their timeline.

Playing woth Crosby could be a reinjection for Laine. It would be a gamble, but one worth taking as long as the ask is reasonable.

91-92 is the best Pens team ever. 16-5 in the playoffs, ended the run with two sweeps, against the Bruins and Blackhawks. I don't think that any other Pens' roster has the depth that the 92 team had. The biggest thing, for me, is that the 92 team was coached by Scotty Bowman. Mike Sullivan's nowhere near the coach.

Sullivan has definitely not been great over the last couple of years but don’t forget how great he was to start his tenure. He completely changed the team and how they played, and is arguably the best coach in franchise history imo

I’d love to have him! Put him on Sid’s line and then have bunting and Malkin getting better chemistry I think that top 6 would be good! Laine isn’t that old either and we need a young goal scorer

Crosby is a quintessential winner, but I’ll never bet against Mario. Plus, Tocchet, Stevens, and Ulf would be a real problem for the modern Pens to handle. Different game then. And, let’s not forget Jagr, Francis, Trottier, Murphy, Mullen, and Barrasso. There’s a reason they won 17 consecutive regular season games in ‘93. Btw, fun fact: what member of the ‘92 Penguins team played on a BU team captained by Mike Sullivan?

Yup, totally fair! It really would be awesome to watch, and I could easily see Mario going full god mode (he probably would the more I think about it 😂). As for your trivia, I do not know off the top of my head LOL

Agree about the God mode content. 66 was unstoppable when humming. The best. Trivia answer: Shawn McEachern The original Tyler Kennedy ;)

Don't think they'll retain salary but I think they'll take on a contract like Smith because they can move him later for value. My question is what else will the Pens need to give up? I can't imagine them take on a salary without a 1st round pick included.

I’d guess some sort of a pick but I don’t think they’d have to give up a first for Laine imo.

@@Buckshot99 They do IF you trade for them just BEFORE July. And the only situation where teams do that is when they know they can pay what the player wants and want to prevent others from making offers. We see trade like that almost every season, but you had no idea about that right?

Laine ( if he stays healthy) would be great for Pittsburgh. People crying about his defensive game must not remember Kessel. Laine isn’t a perfect player but has good finishing ability which the penguins desperately need.

If the 92 team played in the modern NHL they would absolutely demolish anything out there. There's so much less meathead intent to injure in the modern NHL, let's not forget why 66 had to stop playing.

LOVE the 92 Pens, my favorite Pittsburgh team ever. But honestly those old Dynasty teams would get killed vs today's teams. The players today are too fast and play too fast a game
@andrewthetruth

I would do it including Smith, but am far less excited if I have to include Rakell. Laine has missed a number of games with injury, and he's more expensive. Rakell showed increased physicality towards the end of the year. Smith is an easy choice to dump. I wonder if they'd take Graves, Smith, a prospect, and a pick.

For me, trading for Laine would be a hard NO. He hasn't played a full season since his second year in the league. Hasn't been in All-Star consideration since that same season, nor has he been in consideration for any of the season ending awards...and especially at 8.7M, even with retention, it's not worth it. There are better options.
