This is one of those scenes that being tears to my eyes. When General Mac Arthur escapes from the Philippines aboard US PT Boats. (PT 41) Love they way they treat him along with the background music. A very patriotic moment about how the US was and hopefully can be again.

There is a larger than life statue of MacArthur at the pier on Corregidor where he boarded the PT boat. I was there about 15 years ago and standing there all I could think about was this scene. Thanks for posting!

In posting this film clip, my Father worked for Admiral John Ford and I know what he would said watching this. If you went back before the beginning about thirty seconds, Ford had this scene buildup. Nobody knew what was going to happen, you see the two women disembark and the boy taken away. Then out of nowhere, this passenger begins shaking everyone's hand for their work. And suddenly its General MacArthur. Audiences went insane when he appeared and it's just to bad that this movie could have been made during the War Bond sales would have gone through the roof.

A John Ford masterpiece. Gets my vote for a top 5 WW2 movie. Great cast, beautifully scripted. Can Academy Awards be presented to old movies?

Whether it actually happened or not, the sailor asking to have his hat autographed is hilarious. As is the Chief's reaction to it. Not everyone would have been in awe of the General at this point of the war.

If you would go back about 45 or 30 seconds while everyone is being off loaded before the General appears John Ford used this as build up because as the General gets out from the cover of the Whale Boat, and begins shaking everyone's hands, the audience on many occasions seeing this for the first time went insane at the possibility this was him!

I always have to stifle a chortle when I see the part where John Wayne has to physically displace his XO from the boat's helm because the latter is to in awe of the admiral, whom I presume to be Admiral Hart, C-In-C, US Asiatic Fleet, who has taken up position beside him. As required by Navy regulations, the senior most ranking officer afloat must be present on the bridge when a US naval vessel enters or leaves port. The ensign had probably never seen an two-star before.

Of course the Hollywood version has the enlisted men beaming with pride. The reality was a little different as officers had to restrain the enlisted men who were angry that MacArthur was running out on his troops, stealing away in the middle of the night.

My point was not to comment on Mac Arthur's record. Indeed he made mistakes, but to the American people at the time he was larger than life. I posted this video clip to show how America portrayed such people in the movies of the time in a very patriotic manner, unlike today.

That is Hollywood for you. You would think Robert Montgomery would have known that because he actually commanded a PT boat in WWII and in the movie they used real boats! (Though none of the original Elco 77 footers that actually did rescue MacArthur were available. They used two Elco 80 footers and 4 Huckins 78 footers.

During World War 1 then Captain MacArthur disregarded orders and went out and rescued a number of his Soldiers stuck in no mans land that had been gassed. He was then recommended for the Medal of Honor but the Award Board thought it would set a bad example for other young Officers, he then was awarded "7" Silver Stars and three Purple Hearts. So cut the man some slack, it was FDR that pushed the nomination not him.

I cannot express how disappointed I am that you gutted this scene by strating it when you did. The full impact of the unexpected surprise of the Generals appearance is totally lost here which is the objective that the Director John "papi" Ford had for maximum effect. The motor whale boat arrives the partial buildup is that "some" Army people need to be taken out of the area, the family of someone gets out and then an Army Officer gets out and begins shaking the hand of everyone onboard the Boat and suddenly bang OMG it's him. All of that is lost because of your poor editing.

Ok, the party line is Macarthur was great. Eisenhower said he studied dramatics under Macarthur. The troops nickname for him was Dugout Doug. He put himself in for the Congressional Medal of Honor... The only person ever to do so. On 1 January 1942, MacArthur accepted $500,000 from President Quezon of the Philippines as payment for his pre-war service. Shall I go on? Macarthur mishandled the Phillipine campaign in the eyes of many American Generals. He escaped to Australia.

Progressive Rebel doesn't know what in the hell he is taking about, the effort for him being awarded the CMOH came from a Member of Congress, many people used the phrase dug out Doug, and even claimed that his personal furniture was placed on a plane while Nurses were taken off and that was not true. Had their been that many aircraft available, the General and his Family and Staff would have been put aboard. As for the remark made of not putting his pipe out, yes he was.
