Your commitment to sand it to perfection like that is honorable. That was a ton of work. The board looks incredible. Well done.

The plywood is definitely a great look, but I would be hard pressed using that for a cutting board. Mostly because the plywood is put together at the factory with glue that is not designed for this application. Was that considered when making this board?

Stunning results!! Quick question, what are the clamps you use at the 7:23 mark in the video? I'm not sure I've ever seen those before would love to add them to my shop.
@jonniewood
@jonniewood Жыл бұрын
Thank you, they are called panel clamps, or 4 way clamps. You can buy them prebuilt from a few different woodworking stores. I bought a kit, and built my own (less expensive option). I made a video of the assembly process that I’m going to upload in a couple days.

It was 3/4” Baltic birch. It can be quite expensive these days, I was lucky to have some scrap I could use

How does the plywood hold up to water?
@jonniewood

Surprisingly well, it absorbed as much mineral oil as the maple during the conditioning process.

Did you check the toxicity of the plywood? When I researched I found out that the glue (formaldehyde-based) could be harmfull when ingested. Or did you take a special foodsafe plywood?
@jonniewood
@jonniewood Жыл бұрын
That’s why I just used it for a border, the food will only touch the maple.

Seems really risky to use plywood on any part of a cutting board! For starters it seems like a really good chance the plywood won't always be avoided with a knife and I didn't notice a warning to anyone who might try to copy this and unknowingly use plywood for food prep?! What if the toxic glue from the plywood leaches into the maple when washing it at some point?
@jonniewood
@jonniewood Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the concern….I’ve done some research on the amount of formaldehyde present in Baltic birch plywood, and I’m comfortable with using it as a border for my own projects. I’m not going to sell this cutting board, and this is not a how-to video….. just me building something I thought was cool in my shop. I do recommend that anyone building anything should do their own research when it comes to safety concerns. Also my wife thinks it’s too heavy, so it will most likely never be used.

Is the glue and varnish/finishing liquid not harmful to human?
@jonniewood
@jonniewood Жыл бұрын
The glue I used is food safe. The finish is mineral oil and bees wax. The plywood is made with glue that is not good for people, that’s why I only used it for a border.

I wouldn't trust the plywood glue for food consumption. So, it's pretty but only a showcase.

The food shouldn’t really touch the border, but it’s also unlikely my wife will ever use it…so should be ok. 🤔

@@jonniewood Jonnie I believe that it is naive to think that food, or a slice or a chop from the knife, will not make it over to the edge. Plywood is very toxic with a huge amount of glue in it. I make cutting boards for a living. I also do laminated plywood sculpture. Combining the two is tempting but I would never use one. Consider it a beautiful piece of art but don't use it.
@jerrykearns6344

@@RossNanfito Yes, I watch videos where people make pepper mills out of spalted or ambrosia wood, in which they sometimes include epoxy resin or wood stabilizer, and then hollow it out to create an unsealed interior pepper corn compartment which may include insect parts and residue, mold, fungus and epoxy or other resin and wonder the same thing: "is this food safe?"

Very Dangerous practice on the table saw at 6:05. Two things, First, that wood could easily get caught by the blade and rocket back towards you,even with the riving knife. I have had it happen. You need to use a push stick. Second when you reach around and grab that same piece you create a more dangerous situation where your hand could get pulled back into the blade. I hope you change the way you do this, because other people watching will think this is ok and do it as well.
