That much variation between identical load and set up would be concerning. Most of us wouldn’t shoot enough of the same load/set-up on paper to see this. This may have made as much argument for hand loads, as it did 410 vs 12. Worth keeping an eye on for sure. Thanks again for the pattern series!

Great video as always. May I suggest though that you always have each gun shooting at max performance, meaning if a gun shoots best clean then do so, or if it’s best on a dirty barrel do so. I’m not being critical in anyway, but I know my Stevens 301 .410 consistently shoots well on a clean barrel or on the 2nd/3rd shots but by shot 4 the performance drops dramatically. I have an 870 SPS that shoots Win Longbeard #5s lights out at 40, but my Stevens 301 .410 with factory choke and Apex 9.5s will outshoot my 12. Anyway, great video.👍
@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA

I agree the Stevens loves a clean barrel 100% it’s the same with mine, the difference between the patterns it throws dirty & clean varies between loads from what I find some loads the difference is minimal

Still working on my $99 Rossi with fixed sights... My front sight was too high, so trying to get it dialed in yet, but the Apex loads don't stick in mine, fwiw. Three inches low at 25 means a body shot at 40, gotta fix that.

@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA
@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA 3 жыл бұрын
going from 9 to 9.5 is no where near adding 100 pellets, from what im told the difference between the two shot sizes isn't even noticeable by sight, one handloader told me its truly a minimal shot count difference between 9 & 9.5 with the same payload

This is exactly why I have mixed feelings about running XR. I personally love it, but I don't load it every time. If in sitting field edges, its in the tube in case I have to stretch it. I've made some VERY tight in shots with it but you have to be 100% on target or it's a miss pretty much literally shooting a rifle inside 10-12 yards. Not that it makes a terrific difference what you run inside 20 but if I'm going to go sit in the woods, it's 3rd degree or grand slam. Actually 3" Nitro Turkey #6 is absolutely lights out out to 40 while throwing a touch wider more forgiving pattern in the timber. I normally leave it at home though because I won't run it over 40 yards cause #6 lead. Sure you PROBABLY are good to 45 or maybe 50 with #6s but it gets less reliable and I'm not crazy about it. I've taken '40 yard' shots that ended up being 47, 52, and 54 yards. Happens.

Over choked possibly? I’ve tried some apex outta one of my mossbergs with a 705 choke and it pattern way better than my 676 stardot plus it was very uniform. And tried it out of my mag 10 Ithaca with a standard choke full 30 inch barrel with beautiful results honestly patterns that would cleanly take birds to the 60/70 yard mark. Just thinking maybe just a full choke if they even make one for the 410?my wife’s 20 ga youth nef has a modified choke and does amazing work till 40 with Pendleton 20ga tss and close range 20 and in it’s not like slugging at his waddles 😀

I’m gonna lie the 12g has the advantage in range ,but the .410 can perform very well at 40rds and It as whole lot lighter to carry than a 12g. It also has less recoil making you less likely to finch/pull a shot on a bird

While you've got better patterns in the .410 with other TSS loads, if this was your first 40 yard .410 tss shot, it'd look impressive as hell. I'm looking to get a Mossberg 510 for my daughter(s) to run and run in the future when the little one gets into it. If I can get federal tss to shoot like this in that fixed modified barrel at 40, I'll be thrilled.

@@BlueCollarOutdoorsUSA I like to take the little ones or pretty much anybody new to it somewhere where you have a much higher chance at a shot right in your face than over 30 yards. And ground blinds are very good tools for little ones. Check out the Rhino 180. Two sides are blacked out where the other two sides are see through mesh. Can't see in but barely even noticeable looking out. Was checking one out yesterday and ill have it for next season without a doubt. If I can get the little 'jr' .410 to shoot federal tss out to 30-35 yards I'm more than happy. I don't expect or really even want crazy tight patterns for a young'en. I'd rather have a dinner plate size pattern at 15-20 and still be tight enough at 30 than be dinner plate tight at 30+. Can't often have your cake and eat it too but it is what it is. I keep wanting to find a Mossberg 510 or Rossi tuffy (the youth 18.5" barrel) tested at say 30 with TSS to see how it works. I've seen videos of it being used in those guns to kill turkeys but not patterned. I'd be interested to see what your Stevens or Rossi would do with the factory supplied modified or full choke with federal tss and/or custom loads. Should emulate SIMILAR patterns to what these true youth size guns produce. Also, the tuffy turkey comes with a removable spacer that makes it the same size as the youth model but retains the 26" barrel threaded for choke tubes and with a scope base. It'll either be a Mossberg 510 or a tuffy turkey with the spacer removed for the kids. I learned on a H&R single shot but I have reservations trying to get kids on birds when they need to cock the hammer to shoot. It's less of an issue for more seasoned shooters, but I'd rather them only need to slide a safety over than cock a hammer in the moment, and then take the safety off.
