I know that it's not financially worth it, but I would absolutely love it, if Mark would put out even one CGR review a year, just as a quick surprise, it wouldn't even have to be a long video. Mark, we need you during these crazy times. Just a simple, goofy game review with your humor, would really go such a long way.

Hate to be "that guy", but Pac-Man didn't "burst out into the scene" in 1980. "Pac-Man Fever" didn't occur until the Summer of 1981 which is why the song "Pac-Man Fever" didn't hit airwaves until 1982. In fact, Pac-Man's first two test sites in Chicago in early 1980 didn't yield good results at all. This is because, in the arcades populated by teens, the nationwide phenomena of chasing marathon scores on Atari Asteroids was the current craze. It was legion. Massive. This was followed by the marathon craze on William's Defender which was equally as bombastic. Teens weren't interested in Pac-Man...at least not initially. However, once Pac-Man went into bars and nightclubs it began to steadily generate a large adult following which eventually spilled over into teen culture in and around August 1981 after the press revealed that owning a Pac-Man machine had become a status symbol among certain popculture celebrities. It's worth noting that the first split-screens and scores of over 2M all occured in bars in mid-1981 which indicates that a lot of practice had been going on by adults over 21 for at least 4 months. I admit to being shocked that this video has so many historical errors in it on arcade culture, and doubly shocked that they come from noted historians who seem to be parroting industry marketing myths rather than relating actual history. Although I love and admire what many of these voices have to say about console history in general, they almost always fall short on arcade history. This is because, I think they're not as familiar with arcade culture as they like to let on. Sorry, but that deficit in knowledge is more than just a little obvious in this video. BTW girls and women were playing video games regularly in the arcade long before Pac-Man and Centipede came along. Space Invaders in 1978 was exceedingly popular with both sexes. So was Battlezone. So was Galaga. It's not true that Pac-Man "suddenly attracted women players". That's an industry myth. One of many in this video.

The reason why Atari VCS Space Invaders worked was 1) WELL... it was close enough to the arcade and 2) OMG - you could play it a little different than the arcade. The fact that you could bring a game home and it felt "right" and then you could play it different?... THAT was awesome. Um, yeah... game modes.

Pac Man was so essential because in most other big games of the time the world and foes were indifferent. Asteroids just float around, Space Invaders pattern just descends, Frogger was all about the world's indifference to your life and actions, you had to ride along. But in Pac Man, they're chasing YOU. Your choices determine the enemy's actions, and that has become so fundamental in game design. It started right there.
