Cockatiels pick their owners. I just lost my cockatiel of 25 years. I went to my bird store years ago and I wasn’t planning buying any birds at that time. This little baby kept following me from inside his enclosure. Wherever I was in the store he kept staring at me and never took me out of his sight. I ended up buying him. He learned how to say my name, mommy and daddy. He was so cute and so little. I miss him so much.😢

I think it is good you had this experience with Clyde. I say that because so many people think parakeets and cockatiels are easy, beginner birds and get them on a whim thinking it’ll be easy. You showed how complex cockatiels are and they are not beginner birds. No parrot is. I have two cockatiels and I know from experience how much love and care and out of cage time they need. Maybe your experience, with all your training will discourage people from getting a cockatiel without learning about them first.

This! Before I got Ozzy 2 years ago I hadn't had a cockatiel for 12 years. I'd been around tiels on and off all my life and they are complex little birds. Oz was hand reared and I got him at 10 weeks old. He was super cute and sweet little baby for a while then hormones kicked in! I'd forgotten about how they can be for a while going through maturation. He's now 2 and can be highly grumpy when he wants. I just respect his body language and act accordingly. Once he's through the moody phase he'll be fine. His bites are nothing compared to the green cheeked conure I had before him!

I had 3 cockatiels (2 right now) and I found it very easy actually. You just need to get them very very young and give them a lot of love and attention. It is not hard at all LOL.

Jamieleigh please don't blame yourself, I suffer from depression and anxiety and my cockatiel Ozzy is my emotional support animal. It's so heartwarming to see just how happy Clyde is in his new home! You rescued him and tried to make his life better, but you were just the bridge to his happiness. Nobody should get angry etc with you.

Clyde singing to the roll of toilet paper is so ... cockatiel. Mine totally sings to rolls of paper towels and it's pretty funny how we can put his head in the tube and he'll be mega happy about it. Good for Clyde! I think tiels are just so sensitive. They love being told they're pretty/handsome. They love the 'love' and praise more than training for the sake of training. So really this is a way better home for him.

I have had small parrots all my life (I am 62). Last year I developed bird fancier’s lung and had to go to the hospital. The doctors told me I had to rehome all my birds (2 budgies and 2 lovebirds). This was very difficult for me to do and I miss my birds every day. Watching your videos helps me still feel connected to my flock. I have had three cocktails in the past and like all my parrots some seem to pick me right away while the others take longer. The ones that choose me right away seem to develop the strongest bonds. That bond seems to not break even when I get them a bird mate. I use to think maybe they think of me as their mate, but found in the case of my male lovebird, who has a mate, he still was strongly bonded with me and had got his mate to be with me more (she has no choice because he can be very clingy with me). Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your birds with me.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said it was meant to be! What we often perceive as mistakes are really just opportunities to learn some pretty darn important life lessons. And we all have them because that is what being human is all about. I am so happy to see Clyde and his new family so happy! When you stop and think about it, it was really a win/win: you learned something that will help you in your path towards helping birds, their humans and your life balance with work and family. And Clyde gained his happy forever home! That sounds pretty perfect to me!

birds like clyde need advocates, even if they're not perfect. They are in short supply. I don't feel like you should feel down because you weren't the ideal helper for him, you were there- and now he's better for it- and that is more than enough!! If we only made 'perfect' decisions we'd never decide anything, but now the world is better- especially for clyde, because you intervened for him.

And now he has moved to his new home where he can now live his best life with his new family. 💫🦜 I enjoyed the Clyde series, he taught everyone so much in a relatively short amount of time. ✨

This series has been especially beneficial to me as there were some struggles you had with Clyde that I was having with my budgie. Not anything nearly as major but enough that I saw similarities. It really helped give me confidence seeing some of the trouble shooting you had and made me reflect on how much residual stress might linger with me from work when the day was out and be more mindful of my head space. Even if I thought I was okay and had put the day behind me before working with my bird. I am happy to say my little guy has been so much more relaxed and eager to see me when I get home from work now! I'm really happy to hear Clyde found his forever home and hope things keep getting better and better for him. Thank you again for sharing your struggles and doing what you do.

For me, the whole point of projecting and fostering is to help the bird become adoptable and get adopted. This one just took a little shortcut. Normally, I’d be uncomfortable if someone else chose outcome for me, but Patty is totally trustworthy to make the best choice, both for this bird and for her good friend. Hugs, JL, deep breath, and new day. ❤

My very first bird was The Problem Bird at our local small pet store. He bit EVERYone- staff, clients, other birds. He was adopted once, and returned. They had to put him in his own cage. Until me. He jump/scrambled/half flew to the top of my head and refused to get down. Went to bite anyone who tried. . .but me. And that's the story of Pascal, my pineapple conure.

I went through the exact thing I went through with Jackie's former Rescue. I had a lot of love, time, patience, and a MasterClass waiting. Rescues get so hung up on that. I will never not appreciate your honesty, Jamie Leigh!! We all have to accept that we can't always, for whatever reason, help every single animal that comes our way; the main thing is to find the person who can, and you and Patty did that for Clyde, there's no blame to be laid on any of you, and I for one could never be angry with someone like you who always does their best for all the birds! It's interesting to read the comments and see the two camps they fell into. To those who argue that Clyde wasn't Patty's to give, I agree, but he wasn't Jamie's either. Clyde is a living breathing creature with a mind of his own who had already been through trauma, and I'm so glad Patty chose not to compound that by forcing a separation when he so clearly made his wishes known. Birds are not possessions, or things that can be owned, no matter what the law currently says. The fact that Patty prioritised Clyde's welfare even over her friendship with Jamie tells me she is absolutely the best person to look after a bird, and just proved it.

Seeing your vids about Clyde and how he now is so in love with Patty's daughter is so much like my current situation. I got my cockatiels "Flynnie and Shaw" over 4 years ago during an emergency. So I took them during the pandemic. Flynnie loved me she was like a dog, she ran after me, she sat on me but "Shaw" hated me from the start. And I took them in... tried training with them. But when I moved both of them were so unhappy and even though I warned my new landlords that they can be loud. No one listened! 8 months later I got complaints. "Your cockatiels are too loud" So with a heavy heart I put them up for adoption with a huge fee... I didn't want them separated and wanted them to stay together. The hatemail I got because of the price is ridiculous. In the end I found a forever home where they have as much space to fly if I cut my flat in half. And low and behold... there was also a fresh new pair of cockatiels and they are so happy. I still have my two budgies but one of them loves my cockatiel hen, sooo... after 14 days of him crying for her... they will too go to this nice holder. And he said he would always pick me up (lives outside the city) for me to be able to visit my former birbs.

This is a very valuable video right here. This shows ALL angles of training birds, or any animal really. With all the polished and showy videos out there it doesn’t portray reality. Training birds can be a real shitshow. My most popular video last year was the compilation of my new Saker Falcon’s worst moments of her first week. I compiled her best as well; it wasn’t as popular so take away what you want from that. Also explaining that trainers don’t always vibe with every single bird/species is an important point. People may have the misconception that if you’re a trainer that you should/would do well with any and all birds as well as believe training one bird is the same as the other; that is simply not the case. Birds are individuals, even within the same species and cannot and should not be considered as the same. I have species of raptors that I have zero interest in flying because it’s not my vibe. And there are some that I do better with than others just because they are easier to read. They are all different and should be seen as individuals; and should be trained as such. And absolutely birds pick their humans; my B&G Macaw picked me even though originally I had chosen his sister, but he wouldn’t leave me alone so here we are 22 years later. Trainers/falconers that put out only exciting, polished, successful videos of their birds doing whatever is doing a real disservice to all birds and potential, new trainers/falconers because it is equivalent to an airbrushed model; …it’s not real life and it adds too much pressure to those trying to reach a fake ideal. If anyone comes after you for this video then they have never trained a bird or are just being nasty and judgmental for the sake of their ego. I say, Well done! 🫶🏻

Sad the series is over but very happy for Clyde to have found someone he bonds with. Reminds me of my cockatiel, we instantly bonded in the same way!
