I think the highest praise I can give Paul as a character is that I completely forgot he was a CGI character almost straight away. Really fun film.

I have only been to Hollywood once, but it was during the premiere of Paul. So I hung out (with a lot of other fans) across the street from the Chinese Theater and watched all these stars pull up and get their pictures taken. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were so nice to come to our side of the street for pictures and autographs. It was a really cool experience.

The irony of someone coming to a KZfaq comments section in order to belittle a perfect stranger for engaging in an activity that brings them some modicum of joy - by suggesting that said activity is made worthless due to the supposed bad character of individuals involved - is almost too profound to process.

I LOVE Paul. There are so many Easter Eggs in there but you don't need to know any of them to love it. My sister and I were laughing so hard at every one. The most understated: Simon Pegg's final words before dying "oh my" are Captain Kirk's last words in Star Trek Generations.

As a tiny little side note. It might seem odd but my favorite line is when Simon Pegg says "we're in America!" For a lot of people around the world visiting America for the first time and seeing where all our favourite movies were shot, is a big deal and feels like a kind of surreal experience. All our lives we see America through our TV screens. But to actually walk the streets there feels like stepping into a movie. So in that sense the line fits the characters. They are really happy to have achieved a big thing for them and actually traveled the 3500 miles to get there. But I like to think it's also in a way, Simon Pegg and Nick frost saying "wow, were in America, actually making a big budget American movie like the ones we have watched our whole lives". Sort of the characters and the actors exclaiming there joy of achieving the dream for real. But all said in the same one line. I'm probably almost definitely reading too much into it. Awesome movie.

Canadian content! Seth Rogen, who plays Paul, went to school at West Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver, the city where I was born and grew up. Superbad isn't exactly a true account of his childhood, but it's what he and his writing partner Evan Goldberg fantasized about as a teenagers and all the teenage characters (except the girls, if I'm not mistaken) are real life people. He does excellent voice work, too. Sausage Party is a raunchy but much better movie than it should have been because he wrote it and provided voice work for it. A lot of the best and most successful comedies of the late 2000s and early 2010s were either written or starred Seth. My mom, who passed away last July, was a nurse and Seth's mom, Sandy, I believe was a nurse's aide and they worked together. Apparently she was quite a hippie when my mom knew her and I remember she told me about 40 Year Old Virgin and wanted to see it because he was in it. Yes, a lot of people from Vancouver sound like Seth. It's Vancouver. If the air isn't filled with smoke from wildfires, like it is now, it's filled with a different kind of smoke 🤣. That's the secret to Canadians being polite - Healthcare and cannabis.

I remember hearing that it was meant to be the third Cornetto movie but Wright was locked up with Scott Pilgrim, so they basically did it themselves. I remember thinking that since the actual third Cornetto was also involving aliens that it made perfect sense. As much as I love Wrights style I'm not sure it would have been right for Paul. There's an earnestness to it that I think you lose with how Wright shoots a film.

A friend of mine used to work for Big Talk Productions. Prior to the start production of on Paul, he was approached by Frost who asked him if he wanted a trip to the US to act as assistant to himself & Pegg. He ended up having to turn the offer down due to not having a driver’s license; as he’d have been driving them both around. 🤦🏻‍♂️ My friend did however go on to help with the casting of Attack The Block; phoning myself & my ex to ask where in South London would be the best place to go to in order to find young actors for the upcoming film. We suggested Old Kent Road. Following the completion of filming, I got invited to be part of a test panel for Attack The Block; viewing a rough cut, minus a lot of the completed CGI (the creatures were people in fuzzy suits in the rough cut) of the film at MPC VFX in Soho.
