We’ve followed Paul Carrack for 50 years, a big hit single - How Long - when he was with Ace, 19 albums, countless sessions (the Smiths, Eagles and Pretenders among them) and a touring band member with Squeeze, Roxy Music, Roger Waters and Nick Lowe. He once put out an album called ‘I Know That Name’ as for so many people he’s still under the radar. His newsagent assumes he’s called “Mike” as he was the singer in Mike & the Mechanics. He's touring the UK in the autumn and looks back here at …
… seeing the Beatles, Chuck Berry, the Stones, Dylan and the Shadows at Sheffield Town Hall. And Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band at Mojos promoted by Pete Stringfellow.
… playing Cologne, Frankfurt and Hamburg clubs in the early ‘70s.
… his time with earnest prog adventurers Warm Dust - “please don’t look them up”.
… the value of having your own label in the world of streaming.
… when Elvis Costello got him to sing the vocal on Tempted by Squeeze.
… supporting Fleetwood Mac and Free.
… playing Ray Charles, Nat King Cole and Sinatra tunes with a big band.
… how it feels to be “dropped like a stone” by Radio Two when you no longer fit the demographic.
… the real meaning of the song How Long and what he has in common with Troy McClure of the Simpsons.
Paul Carrack tour dates here …

'How Long' has as perfect a pop vocal as it's possible to conceive.

Seen Paul many times solo, with the Mike & the Mechanics and The Wall Live. Such a fantastic voice and a very lovely man.

Although I was born in Barnsley, I grew up & was raised, in South Australia. In 1987 my folks had returned to the UK for their first holiday to the UK since they emigrated 18 years before. Sitting with my parents one evening Dad asked, had I heard of a singer called Paul Carrack? Yes I have, dad went on to say, there is a lad from the north of England who had the sweetest voice & was hugely talented. Fast forward a few years, dad ask who sings that song, the living years? I said, your mate dad, that's Paul Carrack, he sings with a band Mike & the Mechanics. "Yes," said dad, I thought it was. Dad passed away in 2014, but that song with that voice became a family treasure to be handed down. At his funeral dad requested we sat one last time, to that song. Thank you Paul. x

That's a nice little story, I lost my Dad about eight years ago, really miss him a fair bit, I could do with his advice in this turbulent time we live in, he was always so calm and positive, good on you mate , g'day from Melbourne.

I saw him play with Ace at Portsmouth Guildhall in the mid1970s. I then saw him play in Bermuda in the 1980s. Great voice. These interviews are often too short. He has worked with everybody, he must have great stories to tell.

I love Free, sorry had to chuck that in, there is a great video where they play a set in front of a tv studio audience, its one of those regional UK networks like Granada or something, but its just fantastic, must be fairly early probably around Fire and Water....Andy Fraser is amazing on bass, they are all great........i like the Action too, love all that UK RnB mod etc, so much great music from that era .

I found a dire straits album in an op shop (charity shop) ,not a huge fan ,but I was a bit spun out when I realised money for nothing came out forty years ago, maybe it's because you hear it everywhere but for some reason I thought it was more recent, I was 19, lol, funny that, time it's weird.

New Year's eve 1974 and Bad Company were due to appear, eagerly anticipated, and we were a bit miffed to learn Bad Co were being replaced by Ace, who were totally unknown. Of course How Long is a good song but we wanted Cant Get Enough etc. Rumour has it Paul Rodgers was off his tits and why he couldn't sing. Paul owes his nameake a pint at least. Imagine if Ace hadn't played on Whistle test that night?

Troy McClure wasn't a real actor. It was a character played by Phil Hartman on The Simpsons.
Это реально работает?!
