Perhaps so. It's just a pity he couldn't put it to optimum use and secure a major global gold over the distance during that period.

Paul Ereng had a simply MASSIVE stride, the longest I've ever seen on any middle-distance runner.

@@deano27671 Unfortunately, I never saw Juantorena compete in person. I saw Ereng win the U.S. collegiate championship in Eugene, Oregon, in June 1988. I was sitting at track level, and when I saw him bound past everyone with ease in the last 150m, I told the friend sitting next to me that Ereng would win in Seoul.

roger federer This was Coe’s first race since getting injured winning the AAA 1500 after almost falling. A week later Coe ran 1:43.3. Coe’s 88 season was going well and ended by the selectors 7 weeks before the Olympics. He still managed a 1:43.9 while recovering from bronchitis after the Trials, faster than Elliott managed all year! The length of time between that 1:43.9 and the Olympics was longer than the time between the AAA defeat by Elliott (and his 1:43.8 win in Oslo) and the LA medals in 84. Coe had proved twice before, and in less time, that he could come back from illness to reach a peak and win medals. That, together with 2 wins over Ereng, is enough for me to believe he would have won medals (notwithstanding injuries) in Seoul.

@@deano27671 key for not selecting him (Crabb was i think) in '88 was his last race in Rieti where he was well beaten by Di Napoli, posting 3:35.7 with atrocious last 300 in 43 secs. at his best, he was capable of sub-40 off this pace. Hardly a threat in Seoul, though his '89 campaign was nearly great. watched him live in Belgrade early in the season where he dominantly won both 800/1500m at European clubs championships. Ereng was great in '89, too, but not much more after that.

@@soulyrasheed to be fair to Coe, he still hadn’t fully recovered from the chest infection that hampered him at the trials 3 weeks earlier. He still had about a month in which to recover and train before the Olympics. He had also beaten Ereng twice over 800m in 88 before the chest infection and ran faster than Elliott managed all year over 800m after the chest infection.

I timed Ereng's last lap here at around 51.3, which is pretty astounding given the finishing time. Anyone have a more accurate time for his second lap?
