Mr. Fastfinger - Mika Tyyskä

7 жыл бұрын

My jam with Paul Gilbert. Mr. Big jams with Mr. Fastfinger... Actually I felt more like I was Karate Kid in Crossroads. Almost related, check out this guitar playthrough video "Wax on - Wax off" • Wax on - Wax off : Gui...
Paul was coming to do a clinic in Helsinki and I was asked to participate. To jam with him. I admit the idea sounded a bit scary, I had to say yes. You don't get too many chances to jam with your heroes.
incredible Tuomas Rauhala and Jyri Helko on Drums and bass. These guys rocked the whole night with Gilbert!
Paul is one of the idols of my youth. He has had a huge impact on my playing and technique. To me Intense Rock on VHS was the ABC of many techniques and fretboard concepts. I used to work many hours every day on those licks when I was around 15 years of age. And yes Paul is still one of the best players on the planet.
Before the clinic Paul gave me two options, jam in E or D. I chose D, and that was pretty much all i knew before hitting the stage.
There was no chance to check the amp berore hitting the stage. Tone on the amp sounded like what Ralph Macchio would have preferred, but it wasn't quite to my personal taste. When you get on stage, you can't tweak the knows too much, you play what you got. As always, the tone did affect my playing.
Damn exciting to be on stage. The jam was filled with drama and dynamics, I sure played some strange notes, a bit too much of hybrid picking, blah, blah.The trickies momens during this jam were the moments when Paul played and I listened. The great tempation is to start thinking of all the licks you can next pull out. But I knew this, it usually sounds very bad and out. So I just waited and listened what Paul played, then when it was my time to play, I reacted to his playing in real time.
Ofcourse afterwards I've been thinking of all the possiblities what I could have done there on stage. Standing next Paul Gilbert I felt like contrasting stuff to his playing, I didn't feel like I want to start speeding. I learned all the basics of alternate picking from Gilberts Intense Rock video backing in the early 90's. I guess that is the reason why especially alternate picking felt very difficult here!
But there is no going back, this is what happened on the moment.
Hope you enjoy this!
If you're new to my music, please check out:
The Alchemist
• Mr. Fastfinger - Mika ...
Thank You:
Paul Gilbert. Jussi Häkkinen for organizing the whole event. Tuomas Rauhala and Jyri Helko for amazing job as the rhythm section.
Extra thank you:
James Spectrum for pulling out his Zoom recorder and kindly recording the audio for me. Jussi from Gloria for shooting this video, especially with such a short notice!

Incredible heros and real musicians encounter. Mika sound sweet and relaxed while Paul float intense in that Frampton's "Do you Feel Like We Do" air, BTW I like so much the way Paul Gilbert does runaway beyond of pentatonic jail and emphasize that rich F# in the D chord in his licks and ideas. That is a clear showcase of high musical skills. Maybe there were some guitar tones contrasts not just from the players instead from sound on stage issues, -Paul standing out noticeably in volume and clarity - but nothing that the genius of Mr. FastFingers could not mask miles away! Thanks for sharing such epic moment Mika.

@MikaFastfinger
@MikaFastfinger 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you a lot! What did I learn: First of all Paul's attitude is incredibly inspiring, he's still very excited about learning new all the time. I also got a little kick that I should focus more on being able to play some traditional stuff and especially blues too. Atleast explore and hopefully find my own approach and angle to 12 bar progression. The two days before this jam I took some time and researched what kind of jams he usually does with guitarists. found some good chord progression and material for me to work on. I learned about myself too, got some more trust to follow my instict and the moment. The most mentally challenging moments here were when I didn't play and Paul played his lines. There's a great temptation to start thing of strategies "how I can surprise him next". Knowing this is a musical trap, I just calmly decided to wait and listen to how he finishes his playing and then replyed to his playing. What I'm especally proud of being able to do this here. After such an experience It feels a more easy to go fearlessly towards new improvised musical adventures.

Well I am glad you posted it. I am going to steal some of these licks from both of you. Its been a long time since I've been inspired to disect a new player but you have done it Mika. I also love Gilbert since he stopped shredding and discovered groove. Super shredding is not as much fun per hour invested as cool rhythmic stuff like in this video. I don't many think young players learn that soon enough.

the thing i enjoy is ... that you both are SOOOOOO unique. Paul is this blues rocker with unbeatable technique. No matter who you are...unless you have Guthrie or Michael Batio in your pocket....that's an uphill battle. But your crazy odd but incredibly musical style made it beautiful. When you started this ... i confess....i pegged you a bit of a Vai clone. but if that was ever true....you've grown so far from it now...it hardly matters. AAAAA grade jam here.
@MikaFastfinger
@MikaFastfinger 7 жыл бұрын
Kind thank you Mark! I'm not surprised! Original Guitar Shred Show really was about making a tribute to my childhood heroes like Vai, Satriani, Gilbert... the licks were based on borrowed ideas. But it's true there was a bit too much Vai in my playing. Those days I had developed some kind of musical voice already. but when I touched the guitar, the guitar took the control, all the things I had learned from other peoples music came out like autopilot. I really had to sit down and explore and learn how to play the music from my heart and sing through the guitar. Making music in your head/heart is the key, then just need to figure out how to play it on your instrument. I find my own playing here little rought on the edges, but there are good moments. In overall I feel great about the (learning) experience and I'm glad I was able to share this video.

Every time I watch Paul Gilbert he always looks like he's operating at roughly 10% of avaialble capacity - incredible. But I put Mika somewhere else entirely. I just think he THINKS differently - truly unique and wonderful.

now that would be something :) Paul got some of my bluesy side out. I can't really play the blues, but I promise I'll work on that a bit more now. Inspiring experience.

@Mr.Fastfinger What I love most about your playing is your note choices or sense of melody and your feel. I think that makes you a pretty competent blues player even if you don't feel one with the tried and true classic blues phrases. :)
