One of the most exciting moments in Olympic history, and what an incredible story and lesson. Sandy, I didn't know you had a KZfaq channel, but I think one of the videos suggested to me from your channel had to do with beekeeping since its related to my general KZfaq inquiries! Fun surprise! Everyone's entitled to an opinion. In this case (AA) the judges, FIG, IOC and CAS determined Paul was the winner. Nemov, an absolutely fantastic gymnast & gentleman, wasn't even in the medals for AA, didn't compete all six events and I believe was ranked 82nd in the AA. But so happy you are Nemov's fan. Clearly, BY MEDALS in a single Olympics, IMHO, Scherbo is still the GOAT.

I remember watching the 2004 Olympics in Athens. I was 10 years old that year. It was Paul & Morgan Hamm that inspired me to keep learning my gymnastics. Where I live, there is no gymnastics gym. The nearest one is two and a half hours away. My papaw built a “bar spot” by taking down the swing on a swing set & putting a bar across the middle just high enough to spot me on my back handsprings & back tucks. When I got my trampoline that following Christmas, I taught myself everything on there then eventually teaching myself how to do it on ground. The hardest skill I still know how to do is a double twisting layout. I did a double back tuck on the trampolines but could never get high enough on ground to do it. Now that I’m almost 30 & don’t do it gymnastics near as much, my knees are pretty much sh** now. Gymnastics is an extremely subjective sport, if not the most subjective out there. Everything is judged on what you look like & impression. I never did gymnastics for sport, I did it for the joy it brought me & the fun of it. It’s a rewarding sport but after awhile, it starts to wear & tear your body down.

Lin Johnson Wrong. Your understanding is wrong. Even the Koreans never suggested what you state about Paul’s score/s. Their claim was that Yang Tae-young was underscored. Of course, it turned out at CAS that Yang, if anything, was over scored. But none of it mattered at FIG or CAS, as the event was concluded and medals awarded before the Koreans started protested. Easily the greatest comeback performance in Olympic history and one of the best in all sports history. Those who think Paul "stole" the gold need to understand that during the Koreans' appeal, it was discovered during video replay of Yang's parallel bars routine that while he was started at a 9.9 instead of 10, there was a mistake that the judges missed the night of the Olympics. Yang had 4 holds (pauses of no more than 3 seconds of stillness) during his routine, when gymnasts are only allowed 3 holds. This meant that Yang should have received a 0.2 deduction that he did NOT get. So, even if Yang had the additional 0.1 restored to his start value, he would have LOST that 0.1 plus an ADDITIONAL 0.1 for the 0.2 deduction for the extra hold violation. The result would have had Yang finishing OFF the podium instead of winning bronze. It was Yang himself who benefited from the judges' errors and Ioan Suciu of Romania who got screwed out of the bronze. During the appeal in front of the Court of Arbitration in Sport in Switzerland, the Koreans lost on every point they brought forward. If anyone is actually interested in the FACTS, you can read the full case transcript and the opinion of the court at the link below. Paul was the REAL winner. web.archive.org/web/20050520131940/www.tas-cas.org/en/pdf/yang.pdf

Sandy: It's still upsetting to think of how Paul was completely railroaded by FIG and the U.S. media. With lies and omissions, they destroyed what should have been a glorious experience for the U.S. and Paul. While Paul has the gold medal, the media stole his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate his achievement. He can't get that time back. Instead, it was filled with accusations and litigation. Of course, the media all but ignored the CAS decision and left all of America to go on believing Yang lost the gold because of the start value error, when in reality he was never in contention for the gold because of his 4th hold violation that was missed. Yang was in contention for the bronze and in truth, didn't even win that. Still, it's much easier to feed the public a simple, sensationalized story and move on, rather than bother them with all those "unnecessary" details. The media and FIG owe Paul Hamm an apology that will likely never come. He should have a very successful life today, but it's the artificially created cloud that hangs over him that will likely affect his prospects for the rest of his life, and that's more than unfortunate. I sincerely hope he writes an autobiography some day (or uses a ghostwriter like me) to set things straight. I'd definitely include portions of the CAS decision because it's VERY damning with regard to both FIG and the Korean defense.
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 6 жыл бұрын
Star: Most of the people had no idea of the truth because the media did such a hatchet job on Paul. They made absolutely no attempt to dig into the real facts. Once the CAS court case was over, the fake firestorm the media created had cooled off. By then, they were onto other things, and the public was left with the complete opposite impression of what really happened. The CAS decision even says, almost verbatim, that it was Yang who benefited from the judging discrepancies that night. Both the ISU and FIG threw Paul under the bus for political reasons and to deflect attention from their own incompetency. The best we can do now is at least share this information to educate others.

@joseramirez9752 6 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention that during the investigation it was found the "3 hold" rule was not enforced several times that night. Overall the entire judging system failed that night. We will never know how the gymnasts would have performed, reacted or adjusted their routines if the scoring would have been properly applied. Which means we will never know who the "real winner" could have been. It is not just a simple math problem and why the entire scoring system needed to be reformed after this. Technically Paul was the winner because the Koreans filed their complaint a whole day after the competition. Scores are final and any complaints have to be filed before gymnasts move on to the next apparatus. This is the reason they dismissed the Korean appeal. Winning on a technicality like that is what makes some people not like him. At a certain point it became bigger than him and a gold medal, but about sportsmanship. He could have given the medal back, at that point it was just a piece a medal, all its meaning and legitimacy has been eroded by the whole scandal. He could have achieved something greater, be one of those goosebumps Olympic movements where its not just about medals, and athletes but about what the Olympics are really about, sportsmanship. But he choose personal triumph, and people punished him for it.
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 6 жыл бұрын
Jose: You are wrong. Please read the actual court documents I linked to in my original post. Nowhere in the official CAS court proceedings did the judges, the Korean team or any international body make the allegation that multiple athletes were overlooked or given a pass on the three holds rule except Yang. Had that actually happened, it would certainly have worked in Yang's favor, but it didn't. Otherwise, the Koreans certainly would have mentioned it in court. It is precisely the reality that it was ONLY Yang who was given a pass on the three holds rule that proves he should never have received the gold medal or even finished on the podium, and that the actual errors in judging that night worked in his favor, not Paul's. In fact, that's EXACTLY what the CAS said in their ruling...not only that the Koreans didn't file on time, but that the judging oversight that failed to deduct an additional 0.1 for Yang's fourth hold actually "worked to his [Yang's] benefit". That's nearly a direct quote from the CAS in the court documents. I urge you to read the entire piece. Paul didn't win on a technicality. Paul also has the moral victory because had everything played out exactly the way it was supposed to with Yang being properly penalized for his fourth hold, Paul would have won gold anyway. It was Yang who robbed a bronze from Suciu of Romania and won on the "technicality" that his fourth hold was missed and could not be corrected after-the-fact because of FIG rules. It is HE that needs to return his bronze to regain his honor. Unfortunately, most people will never know the real facts because they're too lazy to read 45 pages and choose to remain ignorant. Simple minds need simple answers. Paul's rightful win aside, the CAS also makes a great argument for why, absent verifiable score fixing behind the scenes, judging decisions made in the "field of play" should never be challenged in a court of law and why such decisions have no place in the legal sphere. Again, such reasoning would work heavily in Yang's favor had Suciu decided to contest the bronze medal.

During which the crowd protested so loudly and so long that "they" did end up raising Alexei's score, but I don't remember it being enough to change his ranking. THE ETERNAL SCHOOL You asked why the routine was so short. Athletes need to do enough skills with enough difficulty to get the best “start value” they can muster (without collapsing from exhaustion). Paul’s routine was not “short”. It had everything it needed. Then it’s time to get the heck off and see how you did. At the time scores were out of 10.0 max, minus execution. You only needed to compile just enough difficulty to reach 10, and he did that efficiently with well thought out routine that flowed from one skill to the next very quickly. Newer scoring system is open ended, which lends itself to packing as many difficult skills (emphasis on releases, which take longer to set up, usually) into one routine as possible.
