Nailed it yet? Still playing trumpet?
@thomassicard3733 Жыл бұрын
I love it that much, too. Paul is my idol, when it comes to this sort of stuff. Do you play it on cornet or trumpet? I play it on both - and I prefer cornet for this repertoire.

Thanks! The best advice is something you've probably heard before;PRACTICE SLOWLY. REALLY SLOWLY! PERFECT IT AT A SLOW SPEED AND SPEED UP THE PERFECTION. Good luck
@PaulMayesTrumpet11 жыл бұрын
Steve, thanks for your kind comments and for asking a very good and important question regarding breathing. You're right, I don't take or use much air because I use a low flow/ high resistance technique across my entire range. Due to the configuration of my physical technique my general level of compression is higher than most players but my top lip is very relaxed which allows maximum resonance and therefore increased amplitude. It's unconventional but most of what I now believe and do is!

Unless they had multiple cameras, they recorded this in multiple takes and edited together. Still a great player no doubt but he didn't play it like this all the way through.
@meat.5 жыл бұрын
Freddy Shumakerr while no one will say that Paul Mayes is a mediocre player by any means, I seriously doubt anyone could do the entire first part (till 00:34) without a breath. Are you 100% certain this wasn’t edited?
@lukejohnston3635 жыл бұрын
@@meat. I've seen people play pieces longer than this in one long go. Of course this person was using circular breathing

It is possible, just take a deep breath. He isn't blasting out anything. I am less than mediocre and i can do it.

I found the sheet music to this study and read along as he played. This guy is really, really good. Effortless control over a wide range. Very nice indeed.

Thanks. If you like the accompaniments they are now available for purchase from BRASS WIND PUBLICATIONS. You get the trumpet & piano parts in full, a cd of the accompaniments played at 3 different speeds and my solo recordings of all 14 studies. Great value!

Paul Mayes Where was this when I was a music major in 1986?. Your videos are amazing. I would have swum across the pond to have a lesson from you.

Thanks for your positive comments. Great to get this type of feedback and to know it's helping others in some way. Yes I'm preparing some more studies to post soon including 7, 9 and 11. If you ever get that feeling when you need to exhale before you inhale try panting about 10 times before you start - it's a technique I use often. I also get asked a lot about playing the opening 12 bars in one breath; truth is I can actually do it in one @ c=80 ! It's all about efficient use of the air.

Another great performance Paul! This was my audition piece for my high school band in 10th grade. I ate, drank, and slept this tune for 3 weeks! And I can play it by memory even after 30 years of not playing it...although not to the level you play it. Fantastic job! You've helped inspire me to pull out the ol' Arbans book again!

Hello Paul, thanks a lot for your answer. I am very interested in your technique. I have started to play trumpet when I was 6 years old. I think the zenit of my "career" was in 5th grade, playing the first trumpet of Bachs overture, but then I was studyin science and I just rediscoverd trumpet again a year ago. (I never stopped totally) But now it is really fun again to try to play Arban and similar things. I now look at the embouchure more with a scientific view and try different things...
