Paul McCartney '72 Uni Tour Gig That Didn't Happen
In 1972 Paul McCartney & Wings set off on their University Tour of England, their very first gigs. One gig was scheduled but never happened, yet even the venue involved (Leeds University Refectory) still believe they hosted it! I visit the locations and tell the real story here...

Bravo! Love to see the record set straight! And I was happy, proud, to help you out with that😉 The concert in 1973 was a great memory for me, I so remember hanging over that balcony edge on the left side of the stage!! 💕

Marvellously nerdy! Love it. I went to Leeds Uni 1981-84 and saw many gigs at the Refectory, it always seemed to be the first stop on many UK tours for some reason. Great venue!

I enjoyed this a great deal, Andrew. It was nice to learn the story and see the actual venue. I was surprised at how small it is; whenever I listen to The Who’s “Live at Leeds,” I picture a larger venue. It must have been extraordinary to be there for either one of those shows!

Very interesting video Andrew. According to Belmo's "Beatles Not For Sale" book there is a bootleg of the Leeds show and it confirms that it took place on 19th May 1973. The tracks on the record are: Soily/Big Red Barn/When the Night/Wild Life/Keep That Woman/My Little Woman/C Moon/Live and Let Die/ Maybe I'm Amazed/ My Love/ Go Now/The Mess. This might not be the complete set list of course, but it is still interesting to see what the band were performing at that time especially as Live and Let Die features several weeks before being released as a single. Also, I suspect that the song listed as "Keep That Woman" is actually Linda's song "Seaside Woman" which again was unreleased at the time.

Leeds is a lovely place. I spent a week there in 2016 and found it to be a nice, laid back sort of place. I saw a band called CHAMBERS at a venue called The Brudenel Social Club which was really cool and a lot of fun. I really want to get back to England. There's so much I didn't get to see on that first trip. It's my dream to move there someday, not specifically to Leeds although it would be a great place to live.

Hi Andrew this piqued my interest as I was there at this gig and I was studying at Leeds University at the time. It was 1971 that I started my course and I lasted one academic year till September 1972. I remember the buzz around the uni in the morning of Wings coming. I did not really believe it but decided to turn up to the gig anyway as I am a Beatles fan. I remember Linda attempting the start to a song 3 times and the song not actually starting! Paul came across and put things straight and they were able to continue. I got married in March 1972 (there was no way I attended that gig as a married man!). In my own mind it was 1972 it could not possibly have been any other year.😀

Hi John, my dad was also at the Leeds Uni Refectory gig in 1972. He is 100% adamant it was a Wednesday and in 1972. He was sat in the Union and it just got announced over the tannoy that Paul McCartney was here. 50p to get in. Played the Irish song multiple times as this was the new single and Radio 1 refused to play it. He also remembers Linda being unable to start the song etc. Funny how all the people who were actually at the gig corroborate the same information!!!

Just to update on this, My dad dug his diary out of the loft and on Wednesday 16th February 1972 he had written "Paul McCartney + Wings gig at the Refectory". They 100% played the refectory at Leeds University on Wednesday 16th February 1972

@@AndrewDixonMusic Hi Andrew, The main things are, he was sat in the Union and it just got announced over the tannoy that Paul McCartney was here. 50p to get in. Played the Irish song multiple times as this was the new single and Radio 1 refused to play it. They didn't have much of a setlist so was a bit cobbled together. He also remembers Linda being unable to start a song which John mentions above. I showed my dad your video and he thinks you are right that the photo shown in Leeds Uni is not the 1972 tour. But I can promise you 100% that they played the Leeds Uni Refectory on Wednesday 16th Feb 1972. There weren't any tickets from the 1972 gig as they just turned up so no time to print tickets. Hope that helps
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@garyteale69 Thanks Gary, this is evidence I can't really argue with, seems to be no room for error in that memory of your Dad's! My research for the town hall was partly based on Paul's own website stating it was the Town Hall, as well as that being how it was described in a book that was based directly on interviews with Paul by the author. There's a book coming out later this year that promises "Mark Lewisohn level of research" on McCartney's early career and is due to cover the University Tour in depth, will be very interesting to see what they've uncovered on the subject.

Great video and detective work Andrew. It must have been some gig to have seen Paul there in '73. By the way as a side story. I worked around 5-10mins from Manchester city centre in 1972. Two lads came back to our office and knowing I was a Beatles fan said they'd just seen Paul McCartney outside Manchester University. They didn't know about his Uni tour. I wonder what happened at Manchester University because they actually played Salford University on the tour. Cheers...
