On May 15, 1982, “Ebony And Ivory” takes the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100 , holding the spot for seven weeks. Recorded as a duet with the great Stevie Wonder, it was the biggest hit record of Paul McCartney's post-Beatles career.Apr

Hope of deliverance is a good song. Wow mediocre song writing on tug of war, different ears to me. Ball room dancing is penny lane standard. maybe the production is a bit sweet, but it is incredibly tasteful. A nice list. Talk talk is not a good song.

The title song, Wanderlust, Somebody Who Cares, Ballroom Dancing, and the Pound is Sinking are all great songs off of Tug of War. However, the album is really dragged down by the Stevie Wonder duets and Dress Me Up as a Robber. Overall, I think Pipes of Peace is a better album than Tug of War. If McCartney had combined the best songs off of those two albums (which were written and recorded around the same time), he would have had the best album of his career.

Gonna have to check out some of his newer albums too. Thank you Jason for doing this!!! I agree on your 3 best. Ram sounds very unique. Little Lamb Dragonfly is a hidden gem on Red Rose Speedway. The Wings albums Wild Life & London Town & Back To The Egg are treasures, unique worlds on their own. There are some cool unreleased albums too, like Rupert The Bear & Cold Cuts & Return To Pepperland. I grew up with Pipes Of Peace so it will always be close to my heart. I think the song Take It Away from Tug Of War is the best 80's song from him. Amazing that Talk More Talk is so special for you. It just goes to show that whatever people releases there will always be some who like and some who dislike. Every song is someones favorite. My Paul collection stops with Flaming Pie. I'm really not a fan of any music from the past twenty years.

Great review. You can see from all the bad songs Paul did that having a sounding board of John George n Ringo really kept paul on track. If paul was alone from the beginning he would have sunk himself before developing into the great songwriter he became. He put out a ton of clunkers even after he was a wonderful songwriter. Theres no way he would have made it without John, George n Ringo. His great songs are amazing tho. I think he would have never made it to those amazing solo songs if he never developed with John George n Ringo. He would have buried himself with terrible songs if he didnt have such a good sounding board to develop with....

Don't really get the animosity towards his latter work, which you call "desperate to sound current". As much as I understand what you mean and why you say it, but if that's the main argument why an album is weak, then it seems to have little to do with the actual music, and more to do with how you perceive McCartney as an artist. And...placing Tug Of War in the bottom bit of the ranking list is nothing short of scandalous ;)

Thank you for this thoughtful effort. By way of background, I became a Beatles/McCartney fan the day they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on Feb 9 1964. I can practically remember the pajamas I was wearing. I am always shocked how, as "let's talk" below says, "the [McCartney] fandom has such different opinions and conversations." For example, while you say that Off the Ground is weak (I agree 100%), I don't think there's nothing good on it: "Hope of Deliverance" is super (if you've ever been associated with physical or spiritual pain). NEW was an immensely pleasant surprise; ironically I dislike the 2 songs you like (including "New"). Driving Rain is indeed weak, but Lonely Road I love. I have never found anything remotely decent on Wild Life - and I try every 5 years or so. I was in college when Red Rose Speedway came out and I tried REALLY hard to like it (love the cover); but to this day I find it awful. And that's why it "gets a bad rap."Pipes of Peace has the terrific Say, Say, Say (we agree here ) and the rest is garbage (except maybe The Man). Rough Ride isn't interesting - but every song on Wild Life is worse. On Press to Play, you like the 3 songs I dislike. On London Town, Girlfriend is the song I like the least (hate that falsetto); but has the excellent "Deliver Your Children." Silly Love Songs may be his worst song ever regardless of the bass and horns (OK, a decent production of a very bad song). Totally agree that he has "forced desperate attempts to be current" on Egypt Station, a weak album. Venus & Mars has the great opening/closing song and "Letting Go" - but otherwise seems geared to 12 year old girls (and indeed, my wife loved it when it came out). Ram has gone from under-rated to over-rated; it does have the AWESOME Monkberry Moon delight. Band on the Run is excellent as are Chaos&C and Flaming pie! Thank you!

Hi- Ive been a Beatles fan since age 4 in 1969, and bought "Back to the Egg" in ChCH NZ the day it came out. Ive enjoyed most of Pauls career, except the 80s which were not so good for him. I was a bit surprised at some of your placings - so I made my own, see below. I have noticed that, except for my top 5, all of his albums have at least one exceptional song, 3 or 4 good ones, and 2 - 4 bad ones, more progressively as the list goes. But always one exceptional, a true testimony to his talent. Here Tis: 1. Band on the Run 2. Ram 3. Chaos and Creation 4. Flaming Pie 5. Venus and Mars 6. New 7. Back to the Egg 8. London Town 9. Speed of Sound 10. Egypt Station (I don't know his best for many years) 11. McCartney 111 12. Memory almost full 13. McCartney 14. McCarney 11 (side 2 lets it down) 15. Red Rose Speedway (Truly awful side 2) 20. Flowers in the dirt 21. Driving Rain 22. Press to Play (Even though "Only Love remains" is very good) 23. Broad Street

You put "Tug of War" far too low - should have been among the top five because of the hits. No one of the "Wings" records should ever come near top 10 - except "Wild Life." All the other "Wings" records are shait. Yes, even "Band on the Run" album. Only the last part of the song "Band On the Run" is any good. "RAM" is of course his absolute best LP - and it is the solo LP that has got the most Beatle flavour of all of their solo albums. Mix the best songs from McCartney's "Ram" and "McCartney" with Lennon's "Imagine" - and Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" + throw in a couple of Ringo's songs : "It Don't Come Easy" and "Photograph" and you would have yourself a decent "Beatle" double album.

I can’t argue with much of what you said. Paul is so prolific that he has a lot of duds but just as many greats, this means many of his releases as “albums” can be weak. About Tug of War and Pipes of Peace, George Martin thought they should have taken the best of those sessions to create one great album but Paul wanted to make them into two releases. Martin’s idea would have produced one of Paul’s greatest albums despite the 80’s production.

I agree. I bought Band on the Run when I was a little kid when it came out. I already was advanced in music at 8 years old lol. It's like Dark Side of the moon for McCartney. Great production, great musicianship and the song playlist on the album was really thought out. The album artwork was perfect. And the songs are great. I don't understand what's the problem with Paul trying modern sound on "New" or "Egypt Station"😥. I say in the eighties he try with "Press To Play" and still you put it higher on the top. And I don't really understand it, because a musician of almost 80 years with more than 50 years of experience trying to do something new seems simply admirable to me. Even "Fuh You" or "Nothing For Free" seem like very good songs to me. I really want to know what's your problem with that? :^( There you have the Rolling Stones doing the same for forty years, stagnant because you can't get out of "the classic blues". Do you expect Paul to do the same?

Nothing wrong with doing something new. Artists should always try to evolve. Egypt Station and New don’t feel like artistic evolution to me. They’re trapped in the middle of trying to appeal to his old fans with his classic sound and appeal to young people by doing something “hip” It feels more like pandering to me than artistic growth. But hey, that’s just me. I know a lot of people love those records, especially Egypt Station. I just think maybe people are being a bit forgiving since it’s Paul. If someone unknown made those records I doubt very many people would give them a second listen. Seriously though, appreciate you watching and commenting! Thanks.

"Tug of War" is underrated here, but it does have a problem. Even though two greats who worked on most Beatles' tracks were responsible for recording and mixing this album--George Martin as producer and Geoff Emerick as engineer--the lp has a brittle and harsh sound. The orchestral arrangements and vocal harmonies sadly don't sound nearly as good as they should. The 2015 remix is an improvement to my ears, but the recording still lacks the aural warmth of many of McCartney's 1970s records. I chalk this up to a premature embrace of digital mixing technology in this 1982 production.

Kudos for all the good words you said about Red Rose Speedway, my personal #1 McCartney album. It's just SO GOOD, and yet it's so maligned by the rock press and "cool people." There's a lot of variety, but it never feels scattershot or disjointed. The sequencing borrows a lot from George Martin's influence. One change I would've made: Get rid of the instrumental with a studio version of The Mess, a live version of which was the B-side to the My Love single.

I'm surprised your top seven are the same as my top seven, though the order is a little different, I've never seen a McCartney ranking so similar to mine. Nice to see Red Rose Speedway towards the top, it is also one of my favorites. Other than a few great songs, like Silly Love Songs and Arrow Through Me, I haven't been able to get into the rest of his albums (beyond those top seven).

Well done! My own list would be different of course, but you’ve put a lot of thought and personal honesty into it… I agree with you very much about the merits of the underrated “Red Rose Speedway” and also prefer the warmer sound and production values of those early-to-mid seventies records over most of the later albums - “Chaos” being the big exception.. 👍

Just recently found this and one other ranking of all his albums. Both ranked Ram #1 and that’s one I had never really gotten I to. I have now and… wow-it’s really great. I’m also really fond of everything he’s done since Chaos & Creation-Memory almost full, New, Egypt Station. I’m re-listening to Egypt Station now to see if maybe I could see what he was saying and…nope. I really like Egypt Station. Here’s a fun challenge: what’s everyone’s favorite song he’s done after Chaos & Creation (not including Chaos). For me, it’s probably New

For me , Mr Bellamy (from Memory Almost Full) is the biggest stand-out track since C & C - quirky, creative, unexpected changes, interesting production/arrangement, no idea how to classify it in terms of music genre - I just love the piece. It's briefly mentioned in this video as part of what he didn't like about the album - I guess it'd be a dull world if we all liked the same things 🙃

The hardest album for me to rank is "Press to Play." I think about half the album is brilliant and half the album is rubbish. The two songs you mention liking, the title track and "Talk More Talk," I'd put in the rubbish pile. Yes, the sound is as 80s as it gets, but sometimes the production works for these songs. In any case, as with "McCartney II," it's good to see Paul stretch. One critic rightly noted that this was the last of Paul's albums where he was trying to sound "current." The record produced no big hits, and Paul never plays songs from it on tour, but I hear one of the better tracks from the album, "Only Love Remains," as background music at grocery stores, etc. That lovely song definitely would have benefited from a warmer sound with less reverb.
