The best of the best!! Bob Dylan about McCartney “I’m in awe of Paul McCartney,” Dylan told Rolling Stone in 2007. “He’s about the only one that I am in awe of. But I’m in awe of him. He can do it all and he’s never let up, you know. He’s got the gift for melody, he’s got the rhythm. He can play any instrument. He can scream and shout as good as anybody and he can sing the ballad as good as anybody, you know so … And his melodies are, you know, effortless. That’s what you have to be in awe … I’m in awe of him maybe just because he’s just so damn effortless.”

The Rickenbacker with roundwoumds! Makes it sound a bit like Chris Squire 😄
@bassmanluke
@bassmanluke 4 ай бұрын
Not rounds. If you look close you can see the toggle switch is up position which gives a super bass-less harsh trebly tone because on Paul’s bass that mean it’s bridge pickup only being used - something he never does, for post 1975 wings it’s almost always in the middle position giving a punchier Ric tone as heard in Wings over America and Wings at the Speed of Sound etc. On Beatles he only ever used the toaster pickup (down position). The capacitor is most certainly still in place in Paul’s Ric. This has been confirmed to me by the Ric guy who repaired his bass in mid 70’s. So what your hearing is a 4001 bridge pickup with the 0.0047 capacitor which gives that completely bass-less tone… even with flats. It’s the most important factor on a 4001/4003 if you want that classic Squire tone or classic Ric tone heard on many old records. Never bypass it! Mine is set up the same. They call is vintage mode these days.

Great footage, thanks so much for posting. I always wondered what the Paul and Elvis sessions back in the late 80s were like and boys we have got a good snap shot of them here. I sort of Imagined them to be more formal but obviously they were not. I think Elvis is slightly in awe of Paul (who isn't) whilst Paul is trying to put over, come on I'm just one of the lads. I think Paul was the best at socialising with other musicians out of all the beatles, John said that the beatles were the only people he'd ever played with and afterwards I think he found it a bit scary to work with new people. Probably why he had George and Ringo on the Tittenhurst Park albums. This clip also shows the evolution of my brave face, at the end it really is not far of the recorded version.

At 19:41-:42 where Paul decides to go into high register you can hear him slide into it, just momentarily going slightly off tune till he found the note. He is so gifted. There are things we can practice and improve but Paul's voice comes from somewhere else. I'm not really superstitious nor a fate-ist but sometimes think that from birth Paul was destined for this.

They apparently met up about ten to 12 years later and talked about collaborating again. McCartney supposedly sketched out a basic plan on paper regarding making demos and recording them. He then slipped it into a book on his bookshelf and that was the end of it.

@@javierrodriguez-fonseca4717 I know, right? I keep hearing that this is his reputation, but audio and video keep showing the opposite! We've heard from all participants (including Paul) that Paul was a tyrant in the studio with Badfinger because he wanted their version to sound exactly like his demo. But I listened to the studio tapes and he was anything but. He was patient and listened to them. He tried out different things. He never interrupted a take unless he was the one who screwed up and then he would apologize. But yes, he wanted it to sound like the demo, because he knew it would be a hit. He was the writer/producer and he was just doing his job. He was no way near as over-bearing as the average 80s producer, who controlled the entire process.

I am glad he got back to a happy place doing this album as shown by this recording. He thought he was going to achieve this with Phil Ramone (Billy Joel's producer who he liked initially) when he recorded Return to Pepperland previously, but unfortunately got into a fight over the drumming. Paul wanted electronic drumming. Phil wanted traditional. Phil won, and the songs were traditional drumming and actually pretty good including the title track you can find on KZfaq. Unfortunately, when the album was finished Paul disliked it because of the drumming and would not release it. It became some B sides of this album instead, and someone posted the full album on KZfaq which actually was pretty good as recorded.

Never been a fan of the final version of My Brave Face, but I really love the faster demos. Elvis Costello even mentioned it in Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink, suggesting the song was spoiled by the contemporary production. Really highlights Paul's great ear for melody and harmonies, and it's a lot like what I'd imagine an 80s Beatles single might have sounded like.

Is there a long clip of this somewhere because I recall seeing Paul calling Elvis Costello we can’t sing it like this. It sounds too much like the Beatles.. I was actually did, and they should’ve kept it that way because I like it. Anyway, what is the part where they sing? ‘Take me to that place’ sounds likeLennon and McCartney. Fred Fat asked: "how where why when - thank u" Elvis Costello worked with Paul McCartney during the recording sessions for his "Flowers in the Dirt" album which was released on June 5th, 1989. Costello co-wrote four of the songs on the album with Paul (plus one other song that was used as a B side on one of Paul's singles). The song "My Brave Face", which they co-wrote, was released prior to the album as a single (on May 5th, 1989) and went to #18 in the UK, #25 in the US and was #1 in Japan. The album went to #1 in the UK and Norway and was #2 in Sweden, #3 in Italy, #4 in Spain... but only reached #21 in the US. Two of the songs that you see them working on in this video ("Twenty Fine Fingers" and "Tommy's Coming Home") were not released until 28 years later - when a 2017 remaster with extras became available.

You might read "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink" by Elvis Costello, and give a look at the online video interviews of both Elvis and Paul talking about each other. And then there is Costello's performance of Penny Lane to honor Paul at his Gershwin Prize award ceremony. These two guys really like and respect each other.
