Paul McCartney and Wings: Band on the Run In this one hour documentary Dermot O'Leary meets Sir Paul McCartney to hear about the making of the 1973 classic Wings album Band on the Run. Dermot hears how McCartney flew out to Lagos in Nigeria to make the record -- even though two members of his band resigned before the flight Arriving there, the former Beatle found the recording studio half finished. McCartney was mugged, lost his demo tapes - and could have lost his life.. But out of this chaos -- alongside band members Denny Laine and wife Linda McCartney -Sir Paul went on to create one of the greatest albums of the Seventies. The title track Band on The Run and Jet both went on to be massive hit singles while the album became a Grammy winner. The programme also hears -- from those who were there -- about the shooting of the famous album cover, which featured stars of the day including boxer John Conteh and entertainer Kenny Lynch. If Paul will be remembered for anything post-Beatles, it's this album. Even though he had to go all over creation to record it, the trip was obviously worthwhile, bringing forth gems like "Helen Wheels," "Jet," and the title track. Everything was in place, the melodies, the pop smarts, and a real studio production. The amazement was that Wings actually consisted of Paul and Linda with guitarist Denny Laine.

Linda's backing vocals are really the signature of the Wings sound...if you hear her harmonies with MAKA, you know it's a wings song.

Back in the 70's we had a high school disco that was open every Saturday night (it was a semi boarding school). The problem was we were too shy to start dancing. But once the DJ played a song from the Band On The Run album, everybody would jump off the benches and start dancing. It was amazing to see it happen again and again. Among the leading songs were: Band On The Run, 1985, and Mrs Vandebilt, which we simply called: "Ho Hey Ho". "Jet" will forever remind me of a girl I loved in vain. The desperate cry in the song matched perfectly my emotions. Some of the songs did not fit for disco, so they were never played. A friend of mine who had the album, used to tease me: You don't get to hear the good songs...

I wonder sympathetically about my daughter's own dances - Junior prom just passed. Some things seem not too different now but in a very different age. BTW, I got a good laugh with her when I related women's colleges going coed before the '80s and knowing a same age woman at one of them. Some of the womens' college atmosphere remained. Daughter agreed. But the one I knew also said "this place has so many great looking guys, but they only seem interested in each other." Yes, it seems like that today, too."

That Ric!! I see it in the guitar case in this video. It really sounds like that punchy Ric (w/flatwounds) on the track "Mamunia" to my ears. IMHO his Ric & Yamaha produced his best bass tones. ("Silly Love Songs," "Coming Up," "Goodnight Tonight," etc.) The Hofner is cool for certain things. I guess he sticks with it for it's Iconic appeal and lightweight.
@ferabra8939
@ferabra8939 7 жыл бұрын
To me, his most iconic bass tones come from the Hofner and the Ric. The Yamaha didn't sound bad, just too slick, especially in the 80s. And the Wal 5 string was a good instrument. It just didn't sound like him.

Those saying O'Leary is a bad interviewer; why? To me, a bad interviewer is somebody who succeeds in coaxing the interviewee to be open & communicative. I think he did an admirable job & I'm willing to bet that McCartney thought so too. O'Leary is a fan, he's done his research, it's conversational & it works. far better than interviewers who have little interest, are clueless & think they can conduct an 'off the cuff' interview.

@@nevohyams Really looks Paul does NOT want to give DENNY any credit!!! Maybe Paul kept him in the band until it ended because Denny was tops and couldn’t be replaced?? Will McCormick totally agree, he could be far more gracious to a guy who stuck by him long after Wings had run its course. He was a dependable companion. Sure, not the most prolific writer, but there’s a really interesting tv special you can see on YT shot in 1979 which shows Denny was 110% even when the form and fame of the band hand dropped. Yet another example of Lennon’s death acting in all their financial favours.

"Jet" is indeed weird and brilliant . It doesnt have to make sense..... it's stream of consciousness. He was thinking about Jet the pony, then thinking about a relationship, put them together and you get "Jet". Stream of consciousness,....which is how the human mind actually works. Back in seventies, songs were little stories or lectures, I think Wings turned that around.

Band OTR was only released 3 yrs after the Beatles had spilt and in that time he’d put a new band together, had the horrors of the Beatles ended the court case, Lennon singing how do you sleep, toured , done 4 albums , and started a family ! In only 3 years and people were asking “what is McCartney up to where is he hiding “ 😂! Crazy no wonder the musicians looked exhausted before there times then! Music seems to be getting a bit more like that now , now the money ain’t coming in from one album every two years !! Paul McCartney ! The GOAT!

I was a tad harsh there Mike! I do agree with you re your comments on McCartney's post Beatles bass but I have always thought that it must have been difficult. At this time he was in his early thirties, a multi millionaire and just out of the biggest band ever so the motivation to do it again must have been hard. Also with regard to Linda in the band, Iv'e always thought that was the McCartney's saying we can be like John and Yoko too?

@dondamon4669 3 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of his songs are a lot more personal then he lets on. And I really get that if it’s vague it doesn’t matter it’s coming from somewhere within him. He got a hard around those years for not being tormented and having a ‘message’ and you have to admire that he stuck to his guns and done what he wanted to do. I do wish that he let his eccentricities flow a lot more then he did and kept trying to push things forward like he did with the Beatles but that takes not just all your time physically but also your whole being, you have to be focused all the time and soaking everything in and really apply yourself to the album and I think he was just to happy with Linda and being a dad to do that. He didn’t really want to suffer to much for his art which is cool coz he’s also the best example of a successful rock star there is. The time he seemed most troubled was 1968 to 70 and he wrote song good songs in that period! I’m rambling and saying that RAM is my favourite Macca album! ... born 1982 but I’ve been into the Beatles whole life and it’s because of Oasis and the anthology!
