Instagram live 15/04/2021 - Paul McCartney in conversation with St. Vincent (Annie Clark) on about McCartney III imagined. Missed the first ‘hello’ conversation greetings due to poor signal but caught the main chat about St. Vincent’s reinterpretation of Women and wives, songwriting, recording with Andrew Watt and of course The Beatles!

Whatever age Macca stopped ageing at, he's stayed there. And I think that is partly down to his continued investment and excitement in music. And specifically music. You can tell when a tune comes to him he's still slightly awestruck by it. I wonder how many composers have felt the same.

Great conversation between two thoughtful artists. One of the things that always stuck with me in Beatles history: Paul speaks of the unconscious process in inventing “Yesterday”. Terrific song, and original. There was a song from the ‘30s or ‘40s called “Yesterdays”. It’s first lyrics were “Yesterdays, yesterdays... then the melody proceeded upwards in the harmonic minor scale, not the same, but similar to Paul’s song. Paul’s father was a SWING band jazz musician and Paul is in the music publishing business of many old songs and it’s curious he never saw that connection that I see between the two songs. Again, they are not the same, and Paul’s process was perfect, but take a listen sometime to the two songs and you can see were maybe an inspiration would’ve come. In fact, an actress Irene Ryan who used to play granny on the Beverly hillbillies show actually sang it, straight, on the Ed Sullivan show in the 60s. OK, don’t clobber me.

@@Crushenator500 This is a song I could imagine Jim McCartney (Paul's dad) might have been whistling round the kitchen when Paul and Mike were small. The brain sometimes takes stuff like that and transmutes it...so although Paul wrote a different song, I can see why it may have felt familiar to him on some level.

When it was getting good the conversation ended :) Good thing when you ask him why he happened when they composed drugged because he begins to tell the whole process of remembering a song and how he felt so good with John that it did not matter because totally if one was The other forgot or remembered it or if they did not end it with the other's contribution, you are seeing concretely the good, creatively, of such a relationship. By the way, your reinterpretation on the album is beautiful. And it is more beautiful knowing that you played all the instruments!

I just noticed after 23 On the time bar, Annie asked Paul if there's something he's still waiting to write, or something new he's been thinking about recording. I think it's interesting that he was just talking earlier about how the producer Peter Jackson is working on the new Beatles Get Back movie, and he's going to preview it in the next few days. I was hoping that Paul would also talk about a rare moment while they're recording the White Album in 1968, as it was just reported a few months ago, that someone accidentally found an old audio tape where Paul had rang up the famous jazz pianist Bill Evans and his Trio while they were touring through London, and Paul asked Bill Evans and his bass player Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJonette, to come over to Abby Road studios and play with them. They actually rolled the audio tapes for some time, possibly over an hour or longer. And now they're going to release this on the Bill Evans estate and label. Many fans that are only well understanding of popular Beatles music, and not understand that Paul McCartney had a tremendous respect and ability for jazz musicians and that the Beatles actually employed some jazz elements into their later music. So many of us are very excited to hear about this album being released within the next month or so by the month of June for Paul's birthday coming up in 2021, of him performing the song Yesterday and then Bill Evans and his Jazz Trio play with Paul and Ringo in the Abbey Road studios to perform some old Jazz standards such as Summertime, and a few other numbers that I think that they made up as brand new numbers being produced during this recording session in 1968. They say they gave a copy of it to Ringo, in January, and he's been listening to it every day, because he's so enthralled with it. [It was only Paul and Ringo that were in the studio that happened to play with Bill Evans in his Trio that day.] You can search the article on these words and new album title. > I believe it's in a site called AllAboutJazz.com The title of the new album is - "Bill Evans: Hey Bill, it's Paul at Abbey Road." Look this up and read the article about it, it's fascinating, and something great to look forward to within the next couple of months. *Here's the only link with the info on this new album with Paul and Ringo playing with Bill Evans Jazz Trio in 1968 in Abbey Road studios. > www.allaboutjazz.com/hey-bill-its-paul-from-abbey-road-bill-evans-april-first-records?width=412

I've been comparing clips of Paul's interviews with other artists in this little "promo series" in the last minutes, and I think this one immediately shows Annie Clark would easily be actually the better of most of them to actually collaborate with Paul, because their creative spirit is actually anywhere similar (not in a superficial way), like the other "modern rockers"(charlatans relative to mainstream artists genuinely interested in the avant garde like Paul and Annie authentically are in their own rights) that through the industry-complex ended up working on this remix album. This goes besides the point of what Mccartney III was and the remix album because to be frank neither were super touching for me, but I'm happy to see a conversation with one of these younger artists who seems to I think connect with the side of Paul's creativity that I greatly admire, and Annie's work as well. From an industry perspective, if Paul and his managers de-prioritize "being cool", and as much as they can go towards more artists who are actually really actively enthralled in their work like this, and like the work Paul's known for, their could be very effective collaborations and genuine growth in the mainstream of music. Notice how when Paul tells stories about writing this music, Annie genuinely responds and so does he to her, both with immense gratitude and appreciation of the great mystery of music. She asks him "if there's a story he wants to tell but hasn't quite cracked", very good, she's asking about forward motion. There is nothing formulaic about it.

Hey you, you're feeling bad, Take a sad world and make it better. Remember, let the past into your heart Then you can start to make it better. And any time you feel disdain, hey you, refrain. Carry the whole world upon your shoulders. For well you know that I'm a fool who played it cool And made this world a little warmer. Hey you, please make a sound You've found your voice now go and say it Remember to let the world into your heart Then you can start to make it better So let the bad air out and clean air in. Why are you waiting for a group to join with? And don't you know that it's just you and you and you The movement you need is the beholder. Hey you, don't make it worse Take this sad verse and make it better Remember that we are all under the same Sun Then a new earth can begun With better better better better Oh Nah nah nah nah Nah nah nah ... .
