Haha, Paul not getting that he is being mugged is priceless. Pushing the guy back in the car saying he is too cool. ROFL

According to Ginger Baker in his autobiography "Hellraiser", Paul and Linda didn't get mugged in Nigeria. Baker says that the guys who stopped them just wanted their autographs. I think I believe McCartney's version.

Maybe. Hard to say. I was in Ghana. I got off a bus, and I was the last one. The bus driver left and locked it up, and I realized I had left something on the bus. I went back to see if I could get on, and I saw two guys coming down the street behind where the bus was parked. They split up and approached me from either side (one came from around the back, one from the front). I was getting ready for a scrap. I thought to myself “This is it; it’s on.” Turns out they just wanted to talk. Asked me a few questions, then walked off.

The story I heard is that Wings was supposed to record at Fela's studio . Fela and Ginger Baker really wanted this because it would have put them on the map and lessened EMIs control on the Nigerian recording industry. According to Ginger and Fela , Paul pulled out of the agreement at the last minute and recorded at EMI . This is all second hand musical lore so it could completely false . Ginger Baker was eccentric to say the least and Fela ran a compound in Lagos where he administered beatings and jail sentences to those in his commune .

Paul recorded his Wings album at Baker's studios. He even played on Ginger's drums.

Damn man what is it about Europeans, English in particular, walking around sketchy areas..especially at night. My city has a downtown entertainment district that borders on a really rough neighborhood. Even if you're not from here it seems it would be very quickly apparent when you've left the bar blocks and entered the nogo zone but we have european tourists, often english, get robbed in there pretty regularly while walking around drunk st some godforsaken hour of the morning. I always tell any that I meet down there the boundaries and in no uncertain terms to stay the hell away from them as well as to refuse anyone that wants to "bring you to a party, sell you weed, etc etc"

Despite all the chuckles and joking it’s not a cute story. He was fortunate that he wasn’t murdered or kidnapped. As for his wife, well we don’t even want to consider the possibilities. They were very foolish walking by themselves at night. He really should have gone to some other country on the list. Then he could have invited and paid for Fela to visit for the recording. I used to be somewhat of a Fela fan and still have some recordings. I saw him play a show one time. It was in a big room in Philadelphia in the late ‘80s. And no one robbed me when I was walking back to my car. He was supposed to have played the gig on an earlier date but canceled pretty much without warning. So a lot of us had to drive there twice. But that was Fela. I’m just glad he showed up at all.

well, i've known Fela and he kinda speaks like that...i spent like three years playin' in several bands in Nigeria and Benin..i played much with members of the TP orchestre poly-rytmo from Cotonou, you may know....Nigeria, Benin and also Angola and Gabon....i didn't notice that much racism in Nigeria or Benin as most people expects....I did a bit in Libreville, bot not too often, very warm vibe, cannot say the same 'bout South Africa, the sickest country in the world (i'm white South African)....nice experience in Nigeria and Benin....all day smokin' pot and playin' and playin'....by the way, me and Ginger....we never refuse a smoke...R.I.P. Baker

@@martinmoffitt4702 I don't like the Beatles. Was researching Ginger Baker. But nothing to be learned here. I bailed early. It's Sir Paul's show. He seems harmless. I like him well enough considering I am indifferent to his music. So we aren't so different. Do take care.
