Bulk buying some beginner grade material to potentially make some small beginner parcels for my viewers!!! That is you guys! This channel is all about helping anyone get started in opal so it only makes sense to get some practice pieces to you guys.
I'll work it out and put a few parcels together and announce it in the near future. I wont be aiming to make a profit from it I just want to spread the joy or opal carving! Parcels will be really limited but if there are heaps of people that miss out I can try to source more.
Consider it a thank you for checking out the channel.
Thanks Guys
If you are interested in some lightning ridge direct from a miner be sure to check out Paul Pettit on Facebook: / paul.pettit.52

Good work Roy. I think beginners need to realise there are good sellers, bad sellers and sellers aimed at US buyers with deep pockets. Some people are literally buying on one Facebook group and selling the same unimproved stones in another group claiming to have special relationships with miners or inherited material. We generally see top grade material for sale but most genuine sellers will have low grade practice material for beginners. You just need to contact them directly and explain what you want. Buy as close to the source as possible, the miner or someone who actually does have relationships with miners. And if you don't see what you want, ask them. Finally gamble rough to me has generally turned out to be rubbish, don't ever think the seller may have accidentally sold you a $10k stone. They know more than we do😃. Keep up the good work Roy, that carver still hasn't turned up!

Yeah you raise a lot of good points and I have been getting a lot of questions lately which your comment does a great job of explaining. I reckon I might just have to put together a video on the topic since I think it would help a lot of people and then I can send them a link rather than type up a full explanation each time. 👌👍😀

Thats awesome! I would love one! I did my very first drilling on opal this last week. Never done anything like this before. I bought 460 ct parcel on auction for $101. Pieces are really sandy some pieces that all they are, in addition to very small pieces smaller than a fingernail, Bit disappointing. I would like to buy a lot from you. The kits sound like a great idea too! Thanks again From Carol

Hi Carol good to hear you are giving it a shot. Sad to hear that the pieces you got were a bit disappointing. I'm definitely going through these and making sure I dont send the bits that are pure sand (you can see a few in this vid that will be filtered out). Just pieces I know people can at least learn from. Auctions can always be a bit hit or miss.

Great idea and thanks for the link to paul. I've been keeping an eye on opal auctions to see the average prices of bulk parcels so it's good to get other sources. I've been building up my supplies to begin carving and cutting using my dremel as I really am a low budget beginner but I have one question which im struggling with, Where do you sell your opals once cut , carved or polished ? You mentioned you could get a nice stone or two which would easily cover the price paid on the rough parcel but where do you sell them to make that money back ? Thanks and keep up the awesome work! :D

Hi man, glad you have found my channel. I am the worst salesman in the world so I'm not the best to ask, but there are many opal trading groups on facebook and pieces sell quite quickly. Also once you get a few regular buyers you will find it much easier. As long as you price it correctly there are always buyers out there. Goodluck my friend. I may cover the topic in future videos if it'll help people out.

Hey have you ever seen a opal potch black that has no color bar but has milions and billions of needle tip size dots all over the entire potch? I found one and i have no idea what to do with it or if its even worth anything. Its literally milions and billions of dots so tiny i can barelly see them many colors but you can see as a whole and if you take a microscope into it the thing looks like flagstone pattern its so bizarre for me and i cannot find anything about ot in my searches. Any ideas? Its from LR and has a gray layer arround most of the stone. No colors though outside only on the inside of the stone and both sides are cut to see it. So the entire black potch appears to be this way. Can you give me any insights on it?

@@RoysRocks yeah I just never know what to look for and end up second guessing my choice before I pull the trigger. I have been watching opal videos for quite a while and I cut plenty of other stones. Just recently I saw a nobby and I wanted it but after studying it I couldn't figure out how it needed to be cut at all and figured it'd just get messed up it if I had it. I was going to order a finished stone for my first piece, but that's boring and expensive for most cool pieces so I'm in this weird spot where I'm a beginner, but I know enough about opal that I feel I won't be satisfied with most beginning stones... I kind of want something at least mediocre if not good for my first opal. I'm so indecisive but I'm thinking about pulling the trigger and just getting a parcel and hoping for the best
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattsmith6321 hmmm sounds like your best bet would be to get a small parcel of half decent stones. Does it have to be a LR nobby? You could try some good quality Coober Pedy white to start with? Much easier to get a decent stone by looking at the rough. Also cheaper!

@@RoysRocks I was going to get some mintabe at one point. Id prefer a dark, crystal, or obviously a black more than a white. Crystal with a high dome 3d pattern is what I'd like more than anything. Don't care about the pattern or even if it's super directional. But yeah you're probably right and I should stop acting like I'm a opal snob which I'm not at all, just wanted the first one to be really cool. I guess it really doesn't matter because I can always get a second or third one right? I've really been thinking of getting an opalized fossil and then cutting a stone out of that. Is that a bad idea?
