Now the trains that are loaded out of our mines in southeastern BC are 155 cars long. Our coal is mainly steelmaking coal and very low Sulphur content. Used to be the cleanest burning coal in the world. Recently they have some in Australia that is a little better but not by much I was told.

PF or pulverised coal dust is explosive. Normally takes surface temp of about 580deg C to ignite coal dust and between 2.5 -1000 joules depending on particle size, oxygen % pressure and temperature. One lighted cigarette 🚬 doesn't provide enough energy in open air to vapourise coal dust and create an explosion but Company policy these days would make smoking prohibited in all hazardous areas & confined spaces.
@rickprobst57573 жыл бұрын
yeah I was going to say the same thing the one guy commented too yeah it is explosive But it would take a Lot more heat generated to ignite the coal dust the ciggy that guy is smoking wouldn't generate enough heat to ignite it and stay burning Especially since he's out in the open air now had he been in one of the cargo holds Maybe a better chance but even then still bc I remember throwing my lit ciggy into my grill once with coal in it and it had coal dust and it never ignited

@@jimclay6241 They are right after all; coal power kills far more people per power produced than any other power plant type, and that's before you even get into the global warming costs (both financial and human). I wouldn't think so. A cigarette isn't likely to ignite coal or remnants of coal gas.
@mauriceupton14744 жыл бұрын
Normally confined spaces are well ventilated. Takes approx 580deg C in air to ignite coal dust. Depends on particle size pressure. Energy required varies from 2.5 joules to 1000J in controlled conditions. Most of the electrical motors are Dust ignition proof and the electrical gear is housed in certified explosion rated enclosures. Certification varies in Europe to the USA. Coal Mining equipment requires even higher ratings because of methane gas (coal damp) released from the coal. Generally coal is kept wet to reduce dust and prevent pyrolysis.
