Paul Stanley from KISS talks to Robert Scott ahead of their 2015 Auckland Concert. They chat about Paul's view on reviews, what's kept KISS going for all these years, what's left to achieve, working with Gene Simmons, drugs, his sexuality, his kids, retirement and New Zealand wine.

I've always liked Paul Stanley in interviews, also in recent years as he is getting older. In long sit-down interviews, he comes through very honest and eloquent. This is not the usual rockstar and tour hype. He has moved far beyond that.

+Norbert Franz True, but his digs at Ace and Peter, while understandable, seem a little petty and he seems like he is capable of taking the high road. Don't need to hear about them kissing a dong on their shoulder or eating with their mouths open.

Is that is his book, *****? One has to wonder. I haven't read his autobiography yet. We all know that those guys weren't angels, but now with Paul and Gene in their sixties, and Ace and Peter long gone from the active band (it's been 14 and 12 years, respectively), I think Gene and Paul should both give it a rest about the youthful missteps of Frehley and Criss.
@norbertfranz2702

Matter of fact here, I noticed that through the years, Paul Stanley has managed to paint a picture of himself as the perfect, ultimate hard worker in the band. It's like he never made a mistake and the mistakes were always somebody else's--Peter took drugs and wanted to sing lead, Ace was too drunk to play or write songs, Gene wanted to make movies, Gene had all these outside career choices. Paul was always working, always committed to Kiss. That is what I have been getting from most interviews.

He’s clearly a man who has taken in the experiences of his life and learned from them with deliberately honest introspection, and who works (imperfectly, like all of us) to right his wrongs and to pour more gas on the positives he’s been able to see and has taken to heart. It’s refreshing to know of a man in the kind of position he’s created for himself who also (appears to) see his place on the “fame scale” for what it is, and seems to understand that it affords him the opportunity to do a lot of meaningful ‘good’ around him while also having the most fun with it possible - which is contagious, obviously, to millions of Hard Rock fans.

His Phantom of the opera performance was jaw droppingly perfect he took it to a new level. He is one of rocks few really well rounded musicians whiling to take necessary risks to be the best he can be by expanding his musicality where others fear to go, in other words, dont talk it walk it. KISS was the frontier of Rock, I actually see in my mind New York city when I hear kiss songs, thats when you know their music will live forever.

Paul Stanley is so gracious, so eloquent. And why I keep coming back to KISS, and interviews like this, is because they basically champion self-worth and self-validity. Think whatever you want about them, but they are so positive, over and over. And I don't mean egotistical, speaking of Paul here, I mean, he's saying: DO WHAT YOU LOVE. He even quoted Mark Twain about that. He knows what he's talking about, he lives it.

Say what you will, Paul and Gene have an incredible work ethic and paid their dues over all these years. As much as I love the original lineup, I don't blame them for kicking out Peter and Ace in favor of guys who were more reliable. It gets very tiring to work with people who are lazy, addicted to drugs or booze, non punctual, etc.

Exactly! People need to put themselves in these men's position . If you have a business of any type, a d you want to be successful and you have partners, would you keep partneres that are bringing down your business? Would you keep a liability that will destroy your livelihood? Ruin a d waste all your hard work and capital? Of course not! Ace and Peter rode the gravy train longer than they should have, and should consider themselves very fortunate!

They all had their "rocker" moments but paul and gene kept their ssshhheeea together while ace and peter never pulled out in time. It takes a lot more work to know when to stop and many never do. I miss the old lineup and will never forget the sound they made together but you can't force someone to change, they have to want it. I'm just glad they still perform as many groups work until they're rich and then disappear.

So humble. Like Geddy Lee. Speaks so accurately and gives his best to answer every question as he knows people watching this DO really care about Paul Stanley. Like Geddy Lee, he's so humble but a total madman at his craft - the real deal. A hardworking, passionate musician and vocalist. I'm totally inspired. I admit I didn't take Kiss too seriously as a teen but I did like their music. I found myself liking their music in the seventies, the eighties, the nineties, etc. and they're still here. Nobody ever heard a Kiss song come on the radio and said: "Change the station". We always said: "Crank it!" I realized early on there are some serious musicians behind that makeup. The makeup wasn't the show. The makeup added to an already great show and made it larger than life. Rock on Paul ! Rock on Kiss !
