Avatar: The Last Airbender stars Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Daniel Dae Kim spoke with us about what it was like stepping on to set for the new live action Netflix series, and playing the iconic characters.

SYNOPSIS: Water. Earth. Fire. Air. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope.
But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Gordon Cormier), a young Air Nomad - and the last of his kind - reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar. Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Dallas James Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER is a live-action reimagining of the award-winning and beloved Nickelodeon animated series. Albert Kim serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Jabbar Raisani and Michael Goi are executive producers and directors alongside directors Roseanne Liang (also a co-executive producer) and Jet Wilkinson. Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore serve as executive producers from Rideback.

Paul really did amazing performance for his character that people we loved the most in the franchise. Also Daniel really bring us the most intimidated Ozai live action character in the franchise.

I’m not the most forgiving when it comes to inclusive hires because it feels like they are sacrificing quality for ethnicity which in my opinion is not the most accurate metric for success. HOWEVER, with this project, they had a true vision. They knew that they needed quality but they also understood that ethnicity made the story richer because of its beloved source material. They didn’t sacrifice anything for this project it seems. My excitement has only grown with the love and dedication and passion that everyone has brought to this beautiful looking show. CANNOT WAIT!

What are you talking about? The characters are Asian in the source material. Why would you want them to be white? Making them white would be sacrificing quality, because it goes against the vision of the source material. This is a weird take. And the implication that "ethnicity" would generally mean sacrificing quality because people of ethnic backgrounds can't provide quality performances... is interesting.

@@EliasJWhite ethnicity does not equal quality. That is not a negative or a positive statement. Take that as you will. I did not say I wanted the cast to be “white”, I’m saying that inclusivity in any other industry can be sometimes misused in the sense of it being a contributing factor for a hiring decision despite whatever qualifications one may have in comparison to others applying for the same role. That being said, My observation for this project though is that it looks like it was done with such precision and attention to detail because of the amazing source material that you can’t help but respect how much effort the team behind this put in making this seem like a true adaption and not an easy cash grab.

@@larnizzo91 This is still a whole lot of nothing. The casting should be "inclusive" based on the source material. The implication is that casting a non-ethnic actor would mean the actor was inherently more qualified despite it not making sense for the setting. And it does seem like you're implying that "ethnicity" means less likely to provide quality. And white, non-ethnic actors are more capable of providing true quality on the whole, but sometimes "ethnic" actors like these can provide quality. It smacks of tokenism.
