Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best filmmakers alive. Not only does he always turn out amazing scripts, his attention to sound is central to all of his movies. PTA really is the master of sound, just look at any of his movies to see how he integrates audio into his works.
Thanks to Derrick Thompson for help with the script!

This deftness with music kinda gave him a slightly inverse trajectory to that of, say, Spike Jonze or David Fincher. They formed their hand on music videos then went into film, PTA demonstrated such flair in his use of music that he started to direct music videos for his friends. I think it's really cute.

Nicely done. A couple of Nerd Notes: The "ominous bell" is called "Clementine's Loop"--and careful listeners will remember PTA also used it over the scene of Dirk getting beat up in "Boogie Nights". I think it's an incredibly effective piece of music. (I also love the "sad circus" music in Boogie Nights that plays before the theater marquee blasts on screen to open the film. Set's the tone *perfectly* (I believe it's repeated under the end credits, too...) And a well-intentioned suggestion: I'd try and watch the upspeak in the middle of your sentences.

Scott Mumford I think it may be...and very subtly...used in Magnolia too

it also pops up for like 5 seconds when Sydney Barringer loads his dad's shotgun at the beginning of "Magnolia"!

Scott Mumford I really feel that, "Prospectors Arrive," from There Will Be Blood is a nod to this as well.

Boogie nights firecrackers scene is definitely taken from The Player where the cops try to force a confession! Works so well!

sweet insights. i recently rewatched Boogie nights and was struck by the life brought to its scenes, how nuanced the characters and social situations were as well as how emotionally expressive they were nonverbally. In particular there's a moment at a party where Scottie is taking Dirk outside to show him the new car, and on the way Dirk is sidetracked with meeting someone. During the brief encounter, Scottie uncomfortably looms nearby waiting for Dirk's attention again. Really spoke volumes about that character to me. The Scottie character is actually one of the more brilliant roles. Would love to hear your take on American Beauty

Sound and soundtrack are two very different beasts, I enjoyed the bit of the vid when you touched on the drug deal from Boogie Nights but the rest of it felt way too focused on music. PTA does some amazing work with his soundscapes and I'm not sure if you hit the nail on the head with this one. Good editing though keep it up.

+NebuchandnezzarCD, you're so right that he is much more than music. For me it was just easier to focus on it but I can see now that I left out so much stuff. Magnolia isnt even in here! Stay around Cuz hopefully you'll like my next vid even more

Anyone know the source of the clip at 8:24? I'm a little obsessed with PTA content and am surprised I've never seen that early behind the scenes video, if that's what it is.

great video man PTA is an auteur filmmaker and There Will Be Blood is my favourite film. Too many people judge a film based on majority polling like rottentomatoes, and to some extent both detracts more experimental filmmakers with a unique way of storytelling

When I recently watched Magnolia again, I realized most of the movie is filled with music, and sometimes actually it was annoying, since it was so present. Over present at some times.

+Stones Jones, I agree with you, Magnolia is definitely heavy-handed in its music use. I had a little paragraph about the use of 'one is the loneliest' in a draft version but scrapped it cuz it felt too on the nose.

you're comparing 2 different types of scenes from 2 different types of movies at 2 different times where these scenes/actions take place. There could be a reason why they tone it down in one and enhance it with the other.
