Feyd used the move he did to beat the Atreides soldier in the arena to stab Paul. But then Paul used the move Gurney taught him during their training sessions in the first movie. That being said, in the books Paul dominates this fight for the most part and slams his blade up Feyd’s throat all the way to his brain. Guess the director tried to make the fight look a more balanced here.
@josepmahone5008Ай бұрын
Elevated Feyd's character to actually have weight behind his showboating, I like it from a story-telling perspective. It's giving Paul a more balanced character foil, and a single Harkonnen he can respect in combat, if not in personality. The blade to the brain is brutal though and I wish they used it in the film.

His last act towards his prey is respect, and even when he's beaten he maintains that respect and his dignity. He's also acknowledging the rival house by name. As a fighter he has a sense of honor and a fair fight (at least in one on one's as well. He wants a challenge and that's shown by his respect for a challenge and anger at his uncle for making his fight unfair.

Feyd's not only one of the only two characters who embody the Litany Against Fear and pass through without losing themselves, he's introduced actively disgusted that he has nothing to fear and thus no way to be who he truly is. Everyone, including the "good guys" are so manipulative and deceitful and here's this one guy who doesn't fear to fight his own battles, wears his heart on his sleeve and immediately gets shit done. He's someone you wanna see as the final boss or someone who ultimately comes to his senses, switches sides and teams up with the protagonist against the final boss. It's easy to see that potential. It's just that he was in the wrong kind of story for any of that to happen.

I just noticed that both of them have a signature takedown move that they use in every major fight and neither of them really worked when they were fighting each other. Paul does his "Roll over their back and hit them from the other side" and Feyd has the spinning leg sweep that he used in the arena and on Beast Rabban. I like this version of Feyd more than book Feyd, they've stripped out a lot of the talking he did before and during the fight and it makes him seem more capable and focused where book Feyd felt like a nervous talker (In the same way Ramsey Bolton did in that parlay with Jon Snow before the Battle of the Bastards where he was talking about how he'd starved his dogs for a few days. Same vibes) but one thing that was in the books that I would have enjoyed them keeping was the fact that both Feyd and Paul went into that fight ready and willing to cheat a little bit. Feyd had a Soporific coating on his knife (Or one of them, I can't remember if he used two for this fight in the book) and Paul actually coated his with acid.
@TinhamodicАй бұрын
Also in the book Jessica wanted Paul to use the word the Bene Gesserits subliminally inputed into Feyd's mind that would make him dull or slow, but Paul crying out that he won't use it stuns Feyd still.

A lot of the sci fi you listed are incomparable conceptually, there's no similarity for Dune and Arrival other than the fact they are both sci fi. One thing i like about this fight is Feyd gets more dangerous as it goes. Paul is the more experienced fighter but each time he does something you wouldn't learn outside a genuine life or death fight (like the headbutt) Feyd instantly makes use of it as well a few seconds later. To the point he only loses because he drags out the killing blow.
@Commuter6753Ай бұрын
That was a great fight scene. I like the there was no background music during the duel. It reminded me of the fight scenes in the Jason Bourne films. The silence, and the aggressiveness of the fighting moves capture the seriousness of the scene and the movie as a whole, and as you go deeper into the film series, the more serious those scenes become. I can see the Dune trilogy capturing the quality, and I hope it continues in Part 3.

Honestly, they have enough content for a decade long marvel type stint. Yet each movie is so carefully crafted, it could extend out to 10-15 years with just the next 3 movies. I never read the books. The fight was suspenseful. Thinking back on it, I realized that Paul actually knows he's going to win before the fight starts. He goes in knowing he's going to have to be stabbed twice. He actually lets Feyd walk up that close for the last move. Even with all his visions, him taking that much injury was the best he could do to win against him.
@satoru7601Ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, in the book Paul doesn’t know for sure he’s going to win. He sees possible futures and knows the course of action needed to get the future he considers best, but he still has to make it happen, he has to take action. And there are things he doesn’t see or can’t see clearly even after drinking the Water of Life, like the existance of Count Fenring. Paul reflects on the possible outcomes of the fight with Feyd. He knows the Holy War will happen even if Feyd kills him in that fight. He’ll end up as a martyr to the fremen and they will carry out the jihad in his name. It’s less about how powerful Paul is and more about how the war is inevitable by that point. You may be right and Paul was constantly assessing the situation and doing what he had to in order to win, but still, he could’ve died there.

In the book, Emperor Shaddam was accompanied by someone unique, the only friend of the Emperor, Count Hasimir Fenring. He was a failed Kwisatz Haderach and one of the few people Paul doesn't see in his many visions of the future, which meant that in those futures, Paul dies to him. Fenring was ordered to kill Paul after his duel with Feyd, but he refused, which earned him a stiff backhand from the Emperor. Even though he was arguable the most skilled combatant in the immediate area (and possibly the whole empire) , he forgave the Emperor and told him that he is refusing to kill Paul for his sake and that the Emperor should give up. Faced with this, the Emperor had no choice but to surrender the throne. It is widely interpreted that if Paul had died either by Feyd or Fenring, the Fremen would have frenzied and killed everyone; the Jihad was inevitable. Both Fenring and Paul understood the assignment and choose to let Paul live to lessen the impact of the Jihad.

Some people have criticized the amount of heavy breathing.... what those people forget is that it's no sparring. Sparrings are done at about 30-60 % force. And it's not just a fight with knives but a full contact all-in fight incl. knives that goes on for 90 seconds with a short break in between up to Paul getting stabbed! That's a LOT of time! After this fight and after being stabbed TWICE I think this depiction is very realistic and I wonder why people could have trouble with it.

Yup. I only realised after reading a huge thread about it on reddit. It is actually really confusing, and you dont even hear Paul's knife as he removes it from his abdomen whilst he is simultaneously holding and diverting Feyd's blade. Also.. After Paul has killed Feyd and stood up, there is a shot where he appears to still have a knife in the abdomen. It's about half a second long, just before the Stilgar line at 3:16 ... basically a continuity error! See if you can spot it. It's fast and a bit blurry. There is definitely something protruding from Paul's belly.... Edit... i have watched this bit at 3:16 a ton of times on repeat and conclude that they probably havent made an error and it's just the weird angle of Paul's body as he is down on one knee and twisted and bent slightly so that as we are looking at him from his right hand side and slightly behind him it somewhat appears as though blade protrudes from abdomen rather than shoulder. Tricky!!
@PhillipBellАй бұрын
Came here to try to understand the poor cinematography of the knives. I read the book, and know how it played out. But I don't understand why the director would allow a great movie to end with such a confusing scene. Paul is stabbed in the lower left abdomen, and knife remains there. Then Fayd tries to stab him with a different knife (where did that come from?) In the books, it's explained that he keeps hidden knives on his person, and there is also a smaller knife within the handle of the original one. But it's not clear in the movie where he suddenly got another knife? Or was it his original one that the emporer gave him. Then Paul grabs the blade directly and diverts it to his own shoulder. But it's not shown that Paul is using his other hand to pull the knife out of his own belly and stab Feyd with it. It's all terrible cinematography and terrible editing. At one point, it looks like the knife in Paul's abdomen disappears, then reappears in the next scene. What the heck? Could have been a great scene if things were more apparent about what's happening.
@kathryndrew5618Ай бұрын
@@PhillipBell yes!! So so weird. So... there are only two knifes. The knife that Paul is initially stabbed with is his Own knife - somehow Feyd manages to divert Paul's hand/knife into himself - leaving Paul empty handed. Then, yes, Paul divert's the emperor's blade Feyd is pointing at him, into his shoulder for a non lethal wound, whilst simultaneously, and with zero squelching sound or apparently effort(?!), removing the blade from his own abdomen, turning it around and inserting it into Feyd in the perfect spot. Hmmmmm??!! (Though i must say, I could not figure that out for myself after seeing the film twice at the cinema. I actually thought they were trying to depict that Paul had miraculously reversed the direction of the blade Fed was pointed at him, even more unbelievably, and I came online because i was bewildered having noticed that first of all Paul had a blade in his abdomen, and then it was in his shoulder, and i wondered if anyone was talking about that. I had totally not picked up on the fact that Paul's own knife was supposed to have been turned against him, or the way that the final bit played out - unsurprisingly considering how darn unclear they made it!) And yes, there is that blurry shot from the right hand side of Paul at 3:16 that looks like the blade is back in his abdomen again after he has already supposedly removed it, stabbed Feyd with it, and removed it from Feyd. I am trying to believe that they couldn't possibly have got that bit wrong, and that it is just a really weird angle as we are seeing Paul from the side whilst he is bending down on one knee, but the height of the blade location in his shoulder in the next shot makes that hard to believe. I read on reddit people suggesting that because of the P13 rating, the knife insertions had to be not shown. Or some limit to the amount of wounds/blood etc, something like that. Which would explain the editing to some extent. But still, considering how fantastic the rest of the movie is for editing, it is confusing and disappointing for sure. Why not just make it clear and have a higher rating. I am going to watch it again in the cinema tonight, wonder if it will be any clearer on the big screen rather than my 13inch laptop now that i know the information. That's kinda besides the point though.
