I hope everyone gives Paula her dance history due!!! She is a trained technical jazz, modern and tap dancer who choreographed her own videos in the 80's and used jazz dance technique. She also choreographed for Janet Jackson (What Have You Done For Me Lately, Nasty Boys) in the 80's. The 80's is when technical jazz dance became very popular outside the "dance world" thanks to the explosion of 80's dance movies (Fame, Flashdance, etc.)and the introduction of MTV (1981) and music video choreographers like Paula. This particular video is her homage to jazz dance legend Bob Fosse. If you watch his movie "All That Jazz" , you will see the scene she was honoring with this video and she has given credit to him in public for influencing her. Some of the singers you see today do NOT give credit to those who came before them and most of them today are NOT doing their own choreography. I always make sure to include her in my dance history lessons.Props to Paula Abdul!!

Bob Fosse had that going on in the movie All That Jazz, which was about 10 years earlier. That's where the style of dance in this video comes from--even the metal scaffolding on the set, the costumes, and a lot of other touches. (I didn't see the movie until long after this video came out, so I didn't know it at the time!)

Been coming back to this again and again, it's the choreography, the facial expressions, the rap interlude (I think one of the first songs in the billboard charts to hit number one with some rap included), the pseudo violin breakdown - and yes the singing is awesome too !! It's got attitude - singing cannot be restricted to vowel exhibitionism.
@darryl2542
@darryl2542 6 ай бұрын
The very first #1 Billboard hit to have rap was "Rapture" by Blondie, from 1980. But yes, in 1988 rap was still fresh, and Paula Abdul gets some credit for continuing that streak. See also "Opposites Attract", another rap verse, but with an actual rapper as the featured artist. She was a bit ahead of the game on that one, given that Mariah Carey basically credits herself with bringing rap to the pop charts with "Fantasy", yet Paula Abdul did it years before.
