In 1961, I was one year old and my mom bought a new 1961 Gibson LG-2 parlor sized guitar as a 2nd anniversary gift for my dad. It was the first guitar I ever saw, touched, and heard played in person. I grew up with it in our house. I never took an interest in learning to play it. After I moved away from home in 1983, I began learning to play guitar. My dad really didn't play his Gibson very often at this point in his life, and he didn't take care of it very well. I told my parents that when the time came, that I wanted my dad's guitar. I really wanted it for sentimental reasons, since the action was really high, it was really dusty inside the sound hole, and just didn't look or play very good. My dad passed away in 2017, and I brought the guitar back to my house and put it in a closet for about 6 months. I mentioned it to a friend of mine who is a very good guitar player, and he wanted to see it. I let him take it home with him and he cleaned it up a little and adjusted the truss rod. Then he told me what he thought it was worth and I was shocked. It was worth 10x what I would have guessed. Knowing this, I decided to take it to a top-notch luthier to get it playing as good as could be expected. When I picked it up and played it, all the sudden it was no longer just a keepsake, it was also a treasured instrument. I have a few other guitars as well, but the Gibson gets played at least a few days every month. Anyway, I like that I have the guitar that I've known longer than any other guitar and I can still play it 62 years after my mom bought it for my dad.

Got the first ding on my Collings OM2HT while playing on the sofa while my beloved dog was peacefully sleeping next to me. She had a startle during a dream and gave the guitar a little kick. Paul, this was very moving for me. I got my Collings D2SB in 2000 thanks to my wife who encouraged me to go for it. She's been gone 20 years now and that instrument is not "just a guitar" as I suspect yours won't be either. All these years later I look at the scar that my young son put on the top and remember how I told him it was OK, don't cry, it will always remind me of how much more you mean to me than this guitar. I hope your Collings brings you a lifetime of joy and memories.

That was a beautiful ode to your guitar. It is truly beautiful as are many Collings guitars but you’re playing is inspired by your love and passion for the instrument and it shines through with every note. The resonance of the instrument is wonderful but regardless of the luthiers skill it is your love that shines through. On a lighter note the tune is beautiful. God blessed us with open tunings and beautiful woods to bring them alive. Keep on playing.

what a beautiful guitar, wow. The way those single notes sound as loud as the chords is baffling, it's almost like there's some heavy yet musical compression being done to the sound, but getting that straight out of the guitar is nuts, it's like you're walking around with an instrument that has mixed and mastered itself... incredible. great pointers for stuff i could potentially look out for when i buy my next guitar. THANKS

This was so much fun....I've only been playing since May of '21, starting lessons at the ripe old age of 57. After a lifetime of wishing I could play, I decided that I could give it a try. I started watching lessons on YT, and you were one of the first instructors (mentors? gurus?) to whom I gravitated. While I started learning in face-to-face lessons, too, I signed up for your LPP course around that same time, figuring that I wanted to learn everything I could as QUICKLY as I could. I spent too much money on too many guitars, but I finally think I have the ones I want. Except for the topic of this video: a custom-built guitar. I might never do it, but I fantasize about it. What tonewoods I would want, 12-fret versus 14, Grand Concert or Grand Auditorium or Parlor, Collings or Santa Cruz? So many questions....But I thank you, because you answered a few of them. (I enjoy the visual aspects like you do, and the inlay on that headstock is sublime.) Congrats on your new addition, too! And thank you!

I love the small body guitars, and the fact that you zeroed in on the string spacing makes it the perfect instrument for you. It shows us, the less experienced guitar players, that it's good to play as many guitars as we can so that we can find the right instrument for our own hands, styles, and likes.

I love my small guitar too. It’s just so intimate and responsive to being played lightly. It does have a lower ceiling for playing loud, but you know, just like healthy singing has a threshold for producing sound that’s good before you reach for a microphone, so too does every instrument. If it’s a smaller and quieter instrument, I think it’s fun to play that instrument the way that it sounds best, and not to look at that as a con unless you NEED a louder instrument.

Congratulations on the new human! Fatherhood changed my life so much for the better. Bon voyage! Oh, and sick new guitar. BTW, if you don’t already know, Rockabye Baby is awesome for nap time (I was fond of the Radiohead one).

I never took any notice in the smaller guitars. I didn't think badly of them, I simply didn't think about them. Then one day I was handed a Baby Taylor to repair and service for a friend. As I finished, installing the strings and bringing it back into tune, I was struck instantly with the even tones and the volume resonating from the smallest guitar that I had ever held. The sound was so amazing that a song spontaneously emerged, seemingly emanating from the instrument itself in thanks for the care. It has been many years since then and I still occasionally strum that song, but the feeling usually pales when I remember the sounds given by that surprisingly impressive little guitar.

There is something absolutely magical in the bright resonance of certain guitars of this size - a certain brilliance to the tone from high to low that I *think* this guitar of yours seems to have. It's something you can only be certain of when holding the guitar in your hands and playing it yourself; but I have experienced it and... wow. This Collings is beautiful. There's nothing "superficial" about how pleasing the craftsmanship is, both in the sound and the guitar's appearance with the beautiful inlay work on this one.

I played a Santa Cruz firefly and it was exceptional. I loved how like you said the notes and chords were so balanced, it just sounded like a recorded guitar... so easy to play and inspiring

Paul, great congrats on your custom Collings!! Adi bracing? I had 3 back in the day. In the 90's I thought Collings made the most exquisite instruments available despite all the other gifted builders. Bill and team totally ROCK! It's a piece of visual and musical art. So glad you're so happy about it. Enjoy.

Now that was beautiful Paul! There could be nothing better than to see someone like yourself absolutely overjoyed with any guitar. As a guitar maker, this is the dream of overflowing satisfaction with something that so much effort and time was put into. I, personally, have never cared for small body guitars, with one exception. The single O, done correctly has intrigued me from time to time. I tip my hat to Collings on this one and congratulate you on your success in this investment. And your child is just pricelessly precious!!! God Bless You and your family!

That's a beautiful guitar and a grreat sound. I, especially liked the sound quality of the individual strings contrasted with the chords. It's a winner..... congratulations!
