Whether it's guns or just outdoorsing, Paul and Co. always give sensible, applicable, utilitarian advice opposed to the various lunatics you encounter online. My interest in the channel was cemented in a video years ago when Paul pointed out that if you don't have fire extinguishers or a dog when you consider buying a gun for home defense, you dun goofed. having your pack with you cannot be underestimated. Case in point - I went on a family holiday recently, by car, and didnt put a "survival kit" in the car as I thought it was going to just be a paranoid move, not needed, and the car was kind of full. So instead I shoved a small tool kit inside an old cloth into one of the body panels accesible from inside the car behind the trim, and I put a tiny survival kit in the car, poncho, blanket, medical kit ( have small children so need band aids) and a bottle of water. This combined with the tool kit and the radio in the car, would have given me some reasonable options if things had gone badly, but it would have not been anywhere near sufficient to get me home in a proper scenario. What happened? during my weekend away, only a carrington sized solar flare! something i have been wondering about for decades, happened while me and my family were away from everything else we have ready to help us out in an emergency..... Luckily it seems that we have come a long way since the carrington event and basically nothing noteworthy happened, luckily, id have been toast if it did .

In the mid 1990's, I was heading for the "Drive-Thru Tree" in the redwoods. My vehicle conked out in the middle of Lincoln City. An officer and a bunch of locals pushed my van into a parking lot. They we're all polite and friendly. The people at the auto parts store we're helpful and happy. Same thing at the cafe. And the motel. And the bar. The next day, as i watched Lincoln City disappear in my rear view mirror I couldn't help but smile back at all those wonderful locals.

-- Not to take anything from Roy, but it's so good to see you back around, Paul. Might I suggest for your pack: Honey. Lasts for hundreds of years, decent first aid uses, you can eat it. I would also strongly suggest, in the spirit of bugout bags: always have a spare pair of shoes in your vehicle. And your everyday driver is a good place to stash your bag as it's with you or nearby pretty much wherever you go. Finally for a firearm. What I have packed now is a Diamondback Sidekick .22 WMR with also a quick change .22lr cylinder. It's 9 short, double action with a swing out cylinder. I carry 2 speed loaders in a pouch which attaches to the holster. 100rds of both ammo types, and I have one emergency bag in my bugout bag. The idea for that being, if I have my equipment deployed at 'camp' and have to leave with no time to pack up, I can grab 1 bag that will give me access to a small amount of critical items, that could get me by a little longer. Again, great to see you.

I don't usually comment but felt compelled to drop a huge, huge thanks for emphasizing the need to make a kit specific to your region! Born, raised and still live in hurricane county and I've seen way too many transplants leave themselves totally in the wind being prepared with emergency supplies... For a blizzard!

I’ve often said: “pre made kits aren’t tailored to your region or specific needs”. As an Alabama resident theres plenty of water and it rains fairly frequently so for my bags i didn’t pack a lot of water but i do have water purification tablets, sawyer straws, and single layer stainless steel bottles/cups. As for food depending on space: 2-3 bacon flavored spam and or one MRE. In my opinion the best small game “survival rifle” is actually a revolver and it’s specifically the Heritage Rough Rider, i like the manual safety, i like the ability to use a .22lr/short cylinder and a .22 wmr cylinder good for squirrel to coyote sized game. The saying “ammo is cheap your life is not” is why i pack a minimum of 300 rounds of .22lr and 50 rounds of .22 wmr. I highly recommend this revolver to anyone who has a bug out bag, get home bag, or hiking bag. I have the 7.5 inch version but its up to your preference. I did watch Paul Harrell’s video on the HRR .22lr barrel length’s but he didn’t do that same test with .22 wmr if my memory serves me correctly. Basically he determined that for .22lr the best barrel length was 4.25 i believe. However since i keep the .22 wmr cylinder i wanted the extra barrel length.

Paul, you've taught me more by yourself in a couple of years than a slew of people have managed in my entire adult life just with your videos. Thank you for everything you bring to us. I agree with everything on your list, and definitely you should have at the very least a NOAA weather radio as far as tech worth taking with you. Knowing if the area you're stuck in is about to get hit or where you are able to safely traverse is quite literally a life saver. And knowing whether you need to warn a loved one that may be stuck in a bad area that doesn't know it's coming. I got my mom and dad out of their house before a huge storm dropped a tree on it because I had one and it was enough information to know where the storm was heading, they had no radio and their power was out. You never try and sell us on, excuse the language, "bullshit". You always have real practical uses for everything you use, and you don't just shove brand recognition down our throats. Thank you again sir. Only thing I use differently are Ogato 1 quart toiletry bags from amazon (didn't want to link anything without you being ok with it), they seem to hold up better and keep more moisture from the rest of my pack than regular ziplocs do. But they do cost more money, so use what you have of course, a ziploc is better than no bag at all. I just really like them for what they offer me personally. They are triple threaded locks to keep them 100% waterproof and as an added bonus, they are TSA approved, so if you're ever traveling, they work for that as well. Sorry for the wall of text, I'm not great at being concise lol.
