It's a Matrix reference.
Melamine, it's not a dirty word, and it does make some nice cabinets relatively quickly, relatively cheaply.

Just wanna say again how much i appreciate the audio work you do, you're one of the only woodworking channels where i dont have to lower the volume to 20% just to get through the machining bits

Thank you, I appreciate you mentioning that :) Audio engineering is something that I feel well outside my comfort zone in! How have you found the spoken audio in the last couple of videos? I'm trying (new to me) things with limiters and "youtube-standard" normalisation and while it sounds better on my end, I'm not sure how much of that is in my head.

Your demonstrative explanations of why you decide to take a certain approach down to the detail of screw selection are always very appreciated. I too would enjoy the cost breakdown

Haha, I don't know if the meticulous screw selection monologue is to help others or just because my brain wouldn't let it go 😁

Great Job Paul. I agree, Why measure when you don't have to. I use spacers at every opportunity. I also went for the T track solution for my Drop saw after watching a Wood Whisperer Video quite awhile ago, although I did use shop bought stops. I wish I had thought of your idea of levering the Plinth rather than the whole cabinets. It would have saved me some frustration on a past Kitchen I installed about 18 months ago.

Thanks! I *wish* there was a 3m version of it, rather than 5m. For workshop use, 5m is just bigger than what I need 99.99% of the time and I would prefer something less chunky....but I've tried other 3m tapes and the True32 tape has ruined me, and I always go back to it :(

Looks great Paul, very nicely done. With the stops for the mitresaw, where did you pick up the knurled knobs, I spent time looking for them a while ago for a project but gave up.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Mario. I got the knobs from Timbecon! They only started stocking them uhhh.. I want to say within the last 12 months but time has lost all meaning and it could have been this year www.timbecon.com.au/torquata-t-track-brass-knurled-knobs-5-16in-4-pack A long time ago, they had very tiny flip stops for drill presses and the like that had those knobs - the flip stop was rubbish, but I've had one of those knobs for about 6 years now and they're great :)

I am curious about where you got the draw sliders and door hinges from? Been looking to do a similar project, and the last few videos have been great to watch.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 8 ай бұрын
The hinges are Hafele's Salice 110deg full overlay hinges, from bunnings in the 10 pack. They worked out more or less the same price everywhere, and Bunnings I didn't have to pay for shipping The drawer slides are from Trademaster. trademaster.au/products/ball-bearing-runner-550?_pos=1&_psq=550&_ss=e&_v=1.0 I don't know if AHS is their home brand, but they're pretty decent - surprised at how smooth they are for the price, and how many balls in the tracks there are - and came in a few bucks cheaper per set than Hafele (especially when adding in shipping).

Curious where you got the foam sheet for breaking down the melamine? I've been looking for some to go under when using my track saw but not a lot of options in bunnings.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 7 ай бұрын
Bunnings is where I got mine, but I think that was back in 2018 or so, which they unfortunately don't seem to have any more. It's a Knauf XPS board - it looks like Knauf aren't making the boards any more which might explain why bunnings dropped it.

Great work! Loved the video and all the info. Just wondering what software you used (if any) to calculate the melamine cuts that you made?
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 8 ай бұрын
Thanks! I use Fusion360 to model it up, but then manually transfer it to MaxCut (Community Edition, free) maxcutsoftware.com, then I edit the output in Illustrator a little so its a little more readable. If you're using sheet goods, MaxCut is very powerful and I've been using it for years. It could probably be used for solid wood furniture, but I tend to eyeball each piece of wood rather than doing that in software.
@Michael-AUS

I just discovered they MaxCut only support the Windows platform. There's no such software available for the Mac, unfortunately. What a bummer.@@TheWoodKnight

Great job, mate. Can I ask what knid of and where to get drill bit for confirmat screws? (I'm pretty sure it is actuality pozidriv, not phillips head on confirmat screws. But I could be wrong)
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 8 ай бұрын
Funnily enough, I ordered Pozidrive screws and they sent out Phillips head ones. Its head agnostic - I'm sure in Europe you'd be able to get Torx versions! I bought them from Elraco elraco.com.au/director-screw-5mmx50mm-phillips-drive-hole-zinc-plated/

Ooops! I forgot the drill bit. It's a snappytools bit, Amazon amzn.to/3FVlZml or SydneyTools sydneytools.com.au/product/snappy-tools-43540-5mm-x-40mm-countersink There are two sizes of screws - 5mm and 7mm diameter, make sure to grab the appropriate bit

Hey mate, nice to see the shop coming along The panel lifter at 2:30 ; I want one and I want one now. Where did you get it? The 1830 x x2440 quesiton has its roots in a guy named Gabriel Mouton, the father of the metric system. His system had to comply with imperial when we changed over back in the 1970's so eight feet became 8 *12 * 25.4 = 2438.4 and six feet was 6 * 12 * 25.4 = 1828.8 etc. The chippies of the time knew 6 foot by 8 foot and dammed if they were going to get ripped off on material. That PITA is with us today. It applies to "bulk" goods like big sheets of formply etc but funnily enough goes the other way with small stock like domestic melamine for shelving pre-cut where you get 1200 x 595 instead of 1200 x 600. God only knows why they do that. Stay well and enjoy the new shop Cheers David

A sheet of white melamine usually comes 2430 X 1215. Allow 2420 and 1210 for CNC and beam saw optimisation. The sheets aren't square, and aren't clean on edges so we allow upto 10mm form an edge for a clean cut. If it's cut on a CNC it has a 10mm cutter. No way to get 600mm rips out of a sheet. Worse is that quite a lot of plywood is supplied at exactly 2400 X 1200. Sheet sizes suck.

I picked up the panel lifter from carbatec last year, it's gone up a fair bit in price since then. www.carbatec.com.au/bora-pm-1800 The panel lifter I rate a solid "I guess it exists out of 10". It does straight lines reasonably well and as you could see flips up reasonable but I had the melamine stored inside/around a corner, and for those sections I ended up using a hook-style lifter. I'm not sure I'd give it a full on recommendation but I possibly just got a bad unit. As LostWhits said, the melamine sheets actually measure in at 2430x1215 - I was surprised too, I'd assumed 2440x1220! So many different sizes of sheets- 2440x, 2430x, 2400, 2500 - I don't think any retailer I've bought from has actually has the right size listed! 😅

@@TheWoodKnight to make things harder, coloured melamine MDF can be smaller than white mel sheets. And then there is the thickness. Usually allow 16.2 for Melamine chipboard. But for melamine MDF it can be 15.8. Once got some Polytec WoodMatt finished board that measured 14.6mm. I didn't realise until after cutting ~20 sheets. That particular finish requires extra time in the press, which causes it to be thinner. Someone miscalculated..

Yes! The Nova Viking DVR. It's gone up a few hundred bucks since I got it and that was only a few months ago! It was a present to myself - I was very grateful 🤣 I had been hitting the limits of the little Bosch a few times, and had an opportunity to upgrade and seized it. It's a weird drill press - absolutely fantastic, could never go back to something that isn't DVR now, but because of the price would also never recommend it to anyone.

@@TheWoodKnightSince getting the Bosch I could never use a pulley based drill again. It's just a pity that the Nova Viking is one of the only other digital options available. At roughly $2k it's a massive jump from the Bosch.
@TheWoodKnight

Absolutely - it's a shame there isnt' a "blue bosch" version of it. Even if they made it double the price of the green unit, there is still a market for it
