In this video I head out wild camping in the Peak District to a place I've been searching for for 4 years. The weather played its part with wind, rain and the temperature was in single digits. I loved this camp despite an injury, gear fails and a poor night's sleep. I will be back here again

Hi Paul, firstly, I've been watching your posts for sometime now and I'd just like to say thanks for reinspiring me to get off my bum, I just completed a hike in similar weather, were you completely dry in that gear you're wearing, I had a Peter Storm Stormshield 3000mm jacket with a pair of trespass qikpac 5000mm trousers and a new pair of Karrimor Orkney boots (waterproof??, hmmm!!) guess what I'm trying to say is, is my gear adequate, kind of already know the answer lol, I was out for 8 hours, wet after 5, convinced myself I was sweating lol, keep on posting mate I'm sure I'm not the only person to be inspired by you, many Regards Les.

Paul & all you menfolk of a certain age, GO & GET YOUR PROSTATES CHECKED! My brother looked, and felt, the picture of health but, to be blunt, his peeing was apparently a trickle not a gush. So he got it checked by a doctor, it was enlarged and easily fixed with pills. I'm now nagging my bloke to go get his checked because he's just passed the 50 mark himself (brother is 60). You have your orders! Love your videos. I'm stuck in a wheelchair full time now but in my former life, I camped all over my home county of Dorset. I just go camping via KZfaq videos now and I'm bloody jealous! There's nothing better than being under a tent in the pouring rain.

I’d endorse that advice - I was diagnosed with advanced but fortunately localised prostate cancer just after Christmas following ignoring the typical symptoms for up to a year. Also, during an associated CT scan they picked up a probable cancerous tumour (tbc) on a kidney just for good measure... Both are in the process of being treated and I should have a good outcome, but it’s scary what can be going on in there without our knowledge.

Loved the video. I'm 68 years old. My desire to get out camping has never left me. However, Severn years ago, while I was out with my wife, something happened, which changed my life. We had walked about six miles or so, we where about half a mile from home, and I hit what I called a brick wall. I started shaking so much I couldn't stand. My legs just stopped. It took nearly one hour to get home. Over the next week or so, I noticed that I had no fuel in the tank. In other words, I had no energy. This brought back memories of my army days when I used to do forced marches with a full kit, around 80 to 90 pounds, sometimes carrying a general-purpose machine gun on your shoulder. After about 20 or so miles cross country, it became time to set up camp. When the adrenaline subsides, then the shaking starts, but it doesn't last long. Anyhow, I'm getting back to today. These same feelings, the shaking lasts for days if I try to exert myself, and this comes with chronic pain. After the doctor carried out some tests, he said that I had ME ( Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ) and Fibromyalgia. These create problems affect me mentally. I can no longer pursue my outdoor life. Walking even 20 yards is an effort. I'm now restricted to camping in my garden. Even getting set up is like climbing a mountain. We tend never to go to the doctors for checkups. We just go from day to day thinking nothing about it. Would you run your car without checking your fuel, oil, tyre pressure, and body work? We only get one body, and yet we neglect to service it, we all need to have health checks done annually. You go to the doctors and get your health check done. Eventually, something is going to go wrong with it, and everyone will experience a fault at some time in their live. With my problems, I am now in prison, probably of my own makings, because I neglected to have a yearly service, i.e., AN ANNUAL HEALTH CHECK. Enjoyed the video. Sorry for the rant. Take care, and hopefully, I'll see you in the next video.👍

Maybe an E-Bike or something you can take it easy on would allow you to camp. Where I live, there are hike-in camp sites you can ride bikes to and people always come in with the camping gear strapped to the bike(so you dont have to carry it). A lot of nice parks have fun rides into campsites. Not the same as hiking to a wild camp but still a good adventure outdoors. I ride my electric unicycle to camp sites all the time.. HIke in sites are less busy too, so it feels kind of like wild camping. You never have teens making noise and partying, usually there aren't many people there. If you have a health scare overnight, its probably good to be in an established place as well.

Hi Paul , aye it all starts around 50 with your health . I'm sure everything will be alright for you , it's all a balance life i reckon . No one wants to live like a monk , but at the same time you can't abuse your body . Getting out there camping and and hiking is good exercise and good for the mental health side of life too - sitting infront of the telly vegetating is the last thing you wanna be doing . I've had a couple of trips to the quacks and the hospital myself - turned out to be polyps - you can google the procedure . It is a worry , i think that's natural , but it's always best to stay in touch with what's going on in the inside . All part and parcel of getting older i suppose . ATB , Take it easy fella .

Hi Paul, yes I'm still about and walk past that camp site regulary, just to make sure its been looked after, such a lovely spot, near to home, great views and hidden from view. I first camped there 8 years ago on a very snowy camp, around 2 foot drifts, even bought a pair of snow shoes after the camp, it never really snowed after that ! I have a couple more pitches in that area, one when I cooked roast beef with my oven you walked past on your other video, but like you said a day walking about will reveal several good sites to camp. All the best with your health check, definetly worth doing, 20 years ago when I was working we had them at work and I found out I had high blood pressure, been on tablets since, so really my blood pressure has been fine all that time, if it had not been picked up, who knows what might of happened, so get it done, I'm sure you'll be fine. As you know I'm having a break, doing a bit of travelling around and hols, KZfaq does take up a lot of time, hope to be back out camping in Nov/Dec...best get there early if I want to camp up there, there maybe a queue.....all the best Pat

Eh up Pat Thanks for watching but more so for inspiration yet another video. I hope you’re enjoying your well earned break but selfishly I’m missing your videos. That spot is lovely and so close to home for me too. I keep hoping to bump into you while I’m out and about. Maybe I’ll get to buy you a moonshine at the Norfolk Arms one day. Jo is putting a list together for my 50th next year and asked what I’d like. I said to go camping with Pat. So expect her knocking on every door in the area 😂. Looking at the extreme weather we’ve had over the last few days…come winter you might actually need those snow shoes. Anyway…look after yourself mate, enjoy your trips and I’ll keep my eye out for what you entertain us with next. All the best from me and Jo

@@PaulMessner Nice to hear from you Paul and yes it’s a lovely spot especially the view of the city I remember camping there pre LED street lighting time, the city looked a blaze with all the sodium lights, how it probably looked after the Sheffield blitz. I left home this morning on a little trip to Italy, in a little cafe in Genoa at moment, train to Pisa tomorrow, then back to Gatwick and up home, surprising what you can cram into a couple of days. One day you’ll pin me down I,am sure, mind you not been camping for 6 months, be a bit of a novice now ……all the best Pat

We travelled Italy last year by train. Flew into Verona had some time there then the train to Venice. Then on to Florence and finally Rome. We took 10 days and it wasn’t enough. Can’t wait to go back. Hope the weather is better over there and you have a fab time. We called at Pisa when we were in Florence. The tower area is fascinating but disnt get to see any more of Pisa. I hope you enjoy. Look forward to pinning you down 😂 and as you’re a bit out of practice I’ll pitch your tent but you can cook the fine cuisine 😉. Have a safe journey.

I'm nearly 2 years beyond my average life expectancy (I'm mid 50's). Also COVID made me diabetic, wildcamping has helped my head, fitness and I'm in the best shape for nearly 20 years. Glad to see you got to use the camp spot you've yearned for for so long 😁. Go for the health check. I was never given the option and I hike for miles carrying camera gear as a hobbyist landscape photographer. Last April I went to the docs with what I thought was a persistant chest infection. I was sent to A&E and blood tests said that I'd had a heart attack sometime in the previous 6 months or so and I need a cardio stent fitted. 48 hours later I was home with 4 weeks off and a rehab regime to work through. I'm fine now but in hindsight was a bit of a wakeup call. You need your health to do what you do, don't lose the opportunity to find any problems early 🙂 Take care 😁

Eating healthy can be fun that i found .. i make all my own meals and really enjoy it .. i am now pre diabetic but this can be controlled via diet so that it doesn't get worse .. i don't worry about it. Really enjoyed this one. Definitely on the same page in terms of local camps. I had a spot that took me ages to find but saw on youtube and once I did I went as much as possible but now it's quite well used so found another. Literally can jump in the car and 10 miles later I Can park up and walk to my new spot no bother. I'm 45 and not had the old slippery fingers and cough yet but had loads of checks. I blame the last few years as work from home etc has definitely slowed me down. 3 weeks of b12 injections helped top me up, but even though I'm as active as I can be I'm still feeling more run down. I've had my eye on the tarp poncho but 35 on ebay seemed risky for a square of silnylon! But it worked well for you and definitely helps to keep you from being tent bound all night.

Hi. I enjoy your adventures. Eating-wise, a good rule of thumb is two-thirds plant and one-third animal. So eg: 1 pork steak and two veggies. Grill or fry broccoli, peppers, courgette, onion, garlic, even carrots... mixed nuts or seeds also good fried till they pop or raw just as a snack. Aim to consume 30 veg a week. I lost 25 kilos and never counted a calorie. Good luck.

Im 61 & starting to get blood pressure and weight related health problems. I found that what works for me is to eat the same foods but with a twist! For example, i dont eat 2 minute noodles plain. I have a handful of vegetables thrown in. It doesn't take long to add a little cabbage, zucchini, or spring onions & it actually tastes better. I fry a little less & grill a little more & changed to unsweetened fruit juice. I'm still in need of more exercise, though. Need to get hiking. 😕 Making small gradual changes to diet is far more likely to succeed than radical change, at least in my case. By theway, my partner nearly died screaming in agony with his prostate😢A few seconds discomfort is WELL worth it for safety sake. Thanks for a wonderful channel. You are helping me with my ptsd.🙋🏻‍♀️🇦🇺

I got very lucky. Very close to my house is a large piece of land. The developers wanted to turn in into an amusement park, but the idea was turned down and the land is now protected. I've been camping there for about a decade now. The good part is its only a 15 minute hike from my front door. Happy camping friend.

Hey Paul, really enjoying camping with you. One thing I wanted to share about men's health is the poo test for colon cancer. Doing the test saved my life. Normally you don't get it until you are clocking on 60. When it comes through a letter box near you, please do the test. It could save your life too.

Nice one Paul great spot. I’m 54 nearly don’t worry about the health check but you can always learn lessons small changes make the big difference 👍. I live in the south near the South Downs I dream of big mountains but like you said a bolt away close can be as good. That’s what I have and it’s fun. Atb. Graham

Brilliant video. Really appreciate your tips, adventures even when local 😉 and content. Watched whole vid as usual and waiting for mini tarp name, looks so light weigh although yes, dd 3x3 UL might not weight too much more. I always take tarp for the weather proof porch. Look forward to more. Thanks

Hi Paul, I’m 68 and managed to lose 3 stone in 2020 after my first wild camp (to Angle Tarn) convinced me to lose weight! It wasn’t too difficult and didn’t involve any real deprivation or ‘living on carrots and peas’ as you put it. Just increase your protein and fat intake to displace much of the carbs i.e. eat bigger steaks and fewer chips and you’ll be amazed at the effect!

Magical place is that Paul. There are several places like that around Sheffo that you can see that you can see the twinkly lights. Some in the suburbs where you'd have to be stealthy.

You were so lucky to get that tent up before the rain hit. I love a tarp on a tent, i have made many, but i always end up taking them down mainly due to the wind that seems to change on a dime. My fave tarp is my canvas one i made, but too heavy for walk great for forest.
@PaulMessner

I love the idea of a canvas, more traditional setup. But as you say they are far too heavy to lug up a hill. I contemplated taking it down before bed, but took the gamble 😂

Had my Wellman check 6 months ago, at 49.5yrs. Don't worry about it Mate. Lifestyle questions, blood pressure, blood test for cholesterol. I'm the fittest person i know but my bad cholesterol was high considering my activity so some diet changes for 6 months and then a re-test to make sure all on track. We can't do the thing we love unless we stay fit and healthy and if we can get to retirement in good shape, we can do it every day. Didn't get a finger up the back passage, bit relieved about that but shouldn't they be checking that? Ha Ha. Love the vids - keep on keeping on.
