“They’re both their own biggest fans but that membership club has taken a bit of a hit lately…” Who else can completely capture two fighters in a single sentence? That’s why this is the best breakdown show, period. “The easiest thing to do is think about throwing kicks and punches, the hardest thing to do is believe that it’s going to amount to anything”.

Honestly it’s kind of the opposite. If anything I think both of their fan bases have grown pretty largely on the online community bc of Paulos Twitter presence and Luke’s embracing of how awkward and jittery he is. I’ve been seeing mostly super positive stuff about both of them besides from Izzy fanboys

@@hhumca That's ridiculous dude. The only problems Luke has had are his arrogance and his defensive irresponsibility. The guy who orchestrated Luke's downfall and brought to light his vulnerability to the left hand(Jason Parillo) is now his coach and has seemingly fixed his defense. For me, I felt like while Costa landed the consistently bigger shots, Marvin landed regular big (just not quite as big as Costa's) shots too and out-struck him with them. When you saw them after, they both had some marks and damage on the face, and it just felt to me like while it could have gone either way, Marvin out-striking him, landing big enough shots and doing practically the same amount of damage to Costa as Costa did to him, got him the win for me.

It's not just the neck size Dan, the actual skull size also plays a huge role in relation to how easily you can be KO'd. Essentially being KO'd is caused by brain trauma, your brain bashing up against your skull. People with larger heads essentially means the force will be distributed over a larger area, even on the inside in relation to their brain hitting their skull. Larger men who usually have larger heads can indeed resist being KO'd far more easily than a small man, or than a woman for example, and additionally a child can be knocked out easily, and a mere bird with it's tiny head can be knocked out with a very small force. So the size of the head does account for a lot, if you ever look at Kazuyuki Fujita, you can notice his head is giant, next to Fedor his head is like 2x wider than Fedor's, this is why this guy had an iron chin nearly his entire career, it's also why most Samoans tend to have really good chins, they have heads on them the size of a cinder block usually. People with pea heads for their weight class usually get KO'd easily, sadly Luke is one of them. Other examples are Overeem at HW, his head is rather small for a HW. Another example would be James Vick who has a small head for his size. And yet another is Johnny Walker. This is in fact the main determinant, not neck muscles, this is because you don't want to tense up when being punched in the head, it means you are trying to resist the punch, which results in taking more trauma. You want to be loose instead and attempt to allow the punch to partly punch off you, so as it doesn't transfer all of it's energy into your head, and thus you don't want to tense up your muscles to resist being KO, it will only result in you being KO'd cold. So neck muscles really can't do much for you, it's just that people with huge heads usually have pretty big necks. Rampage is another guy with a pretty big head and a super thick neck to match, he also was an iron chin guy.

Thing is Rockhold has really been out of the game for years. I know Costa has had a couple of bad fights recently, however the Izzy fight really fucked his head up and it was still affecting him in the Vettori fight. He seems much better now and unless the Rockhold of 2014 shows up Costa just has to touch his chin ONCE and it's over. I really think Costa steam rolls him. I don't see this being anywhere near as close as people are making it out to be.

Couldn't agree more. What these analysts are doing is assuming Luke is at 2014 level; he's not, he's almost 38 years old with a chin that left a long time ago.

Wow. You're probably spot on accurate. I really like Luke in his interviews, he's a good person. But Luke's chin seems to be bad enough that he probably won't fight in the UFC anymore after this fight. I see this as his last fight. However, I remember when Poirier had a terrible chin, and when he fought Conor he seemed to go straight down to the canvas from one glancing blow to the side of the head. Now Poirier has a cast iron chin. Poirier seemed to improve his chin dramatically. If Luke has somehow improved his chin (doesn't seem scientifically possible, but I'm not ruling out the possibility) he will be able to win this fight via a bad judges decision. Rockhold has enough looks and star power that the judges will award him with a win, provided he doesn't get knocked out cold. But you're right, I don't think he can make it out of the fight without being KO'd stiff.

you undermined costa's performance against vettori aside from that, good breakdown mate and the way you analysed their psyches makes absolute sense, even though i typically hate that narrative crap

It has been years since Luke was at that top level. Would be great to see a career resurgence, but I don't really see it at this point. I think the big questions are around Paulo after his losses and his mindset regarding fighting out his contract.
