How to repair water damaged drywall and orange peel texture in one day!

Today on Paul Peck Drywall TV, I’m going to show you how to repair water damaged drywall and also how to match the orange peel texture all in one day!
First I’m going to need to square up the drywall cuts using a four foot level and marking a line with pencil and cutting it with a sharp blade on my razor knife. I'll also be adding a 2' x 4' and furring strip to be able to attach the drywall to since the cuts are past the last wood studs on both sides.
Then I’ll install the half-inch drywall. I’ll be using a fiberglass mesh drywall tape and a 20 minute fast setting joint compound that gives you a 15 minute working time for each coat of mud on the repair. Once that is dry I’ll be spraying an orange peel spray texture to match the existing texture.I'll be using a Graco texture hopper and a BOSTITCH pancake compressor that I use if i'm just doing a drywall repair this size or smaller.
Using the finish nail gun that came with the Bostitch compressor, I also installed some new baseboard on the two water damaged walls. The homeowner's are going to prime and paint the entire room over the weekend.

I thought we had foundation problems because of all the cracks appearing in the walls where the house had been extended. Nope, it was exactly what you said at 0:44 in the video, even the ceiling is cracked for that very same reason. We're not even going to mention what the walls looked like under the wall paper in the bathroom. I just wanna cry. I'm so desperate to have my bathroom back and not being able to afford a professional, I'm ready to just nail some linoleum flooring sheets to the wall and wood strips to hide the seams... maybe you should talk me down LOL.

Hey Paul, would love to see you do a video on skimming over the bathroom vanity wall after you remove an old mirror and having to deal with those big black glue globs that mess up the drywall after you remove the globs, it ruins paper and it leaves the now brown exposed and roughened paper with that weird texture. It is hard for me to cover up that texture with the mud, then the paper left behind under the old glue glob starts to ripple once it gets wet with the mud, then I ended up doing 4 layers of sanding to finally get it under control. When I was done with that, still looks not smooth, so I finally just skimmed across the entire 5 foot wall there to make it all go away. but I'm sure you have a lot better method of doing this repair more efficiently. It seems the paper behind the black globs is weakened and compromised, yet I don't think I want to cut that bad paper away with a utility knife either and leave that spot exposed without the strength of the paper there. what to do?

Nice work! Did you ever sand the first or second coat and if so did you whipe down with water to get rid of the dust so you can apply the orange peel???

If you don't sponge the edges before doing spray texture doesn't the mud line bleed through the texture just wondering what you did about that

Paul I want to say that you are in Florida. I'm in jax. How are dealing with the terrible humidity this year? Even with 5 minute mud and a big fan I'm having to much trouble getting mud to dry. I use heat guns too, when I have to.

Chris Wolinski 5 min mud doesn't dry in 5 minutes, it sets up in 5 minutes, then u can recoat soon after...

Paul. I love watching you work! If you don’t put primer on that new drywall, besides getting shadows, how long will it take for the paint to fail?

Sometimes it can take only days. Always prime over plaster/drywall mud.

stargateproductions yes but the painter and I are in disagreement that he actually put primer on...This is the first and probably last time I will pay for a painter.:(

While I can't speak for the painter, he may have primed. What needs to be done if you are concerned that the surface was not primed is to apply new primer over the painted surface. This will seal it. I would consider hiring a new painter. What maybe is happening as well is that your drywall joints where not properly finished causing you to see shadows in certain lighting. I generally use light grays with a washable flat finish to hide imperfections in the drywall surface. I hope this helps!

stargateproductions it was the bottom 3-4” of a bath. He did all the drywall on day one. Did second and third coats of mud day two as well as primed and painted. He then put the lid on the remaining paint. He was going to leave said it was sealed. I dared him to turn it over on my carpet. He laughed and walked out. I took a dead blow and sealed the can. He is definitely not doing any painting. Two days later the paint is peeling around light switches:(.

I feel bad for your situation, my best guess as a professional is that the mud was still wet when he applied the paint causing the paint to lift off the surface as the mud dried. Speaking from experience, I would have used quick set and a skim coat of all-purpose the day before. The next day I would have sanded, primed, and painted allowing at least an hour between coats for the paint to set up. You can not patch and paint the same day usually. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Hi Michael, yes you can discuss it with the 80 grit sandpaper in the sanding pole or a sanding sponge. But the all-purpose joint compound has so much glue in it then it’s not absolutely necessary it will still stick to the painted surface without sanding or scuffing. I hope this helps.
