Man do we ever miss him. We were really blessed.

They say that his prime was in the 1960 and 1970. This, in 1988 was stupendous, he was in great voice and singing magnificently. Already singing for 27 years, and could still sustain this kind of sweet quality and superb timbre and resonance.

brilliance of another magnitude.....Pavarotti was special.

Did it bug anyone else that the audience started clapping immediately after the last note? Such a devastatingly sad yet beautiful song deserves a moment of silence. At least I would have enjoyed it :)

Soffro. - Lontan lontano Le nebbie sonnolente Salgono dal tacente Piano. Alto gracchiando, i corvi, Fidati all'ali nere, Traversan le brughiere Torvi. Dell'aere ai morsi crudi Gli addolorati tronchi Offron, pregando, i bronchi Nudi. Come ho freddo!... Son sola; Pel grigio ciel sospinto Un gemito d'estinto Vola. E mi ripete: Vieni, È buia la vallata. O triste, o disamata, Vieni!...

Looks simple on paper, decivingly simple, but one of the more difficult songs to sing.
@azriel85497 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree to you more. As simple as it looks on the score, so tough to sing. I'm "fighting" with this piece al several months to get it - at first - technically in order. I do not have Pavarotti's wonderful throat, alas, but I hope, some day, to get this song worthy to hear. Kind regards.

Pavarotti in his younger days would sing this "darker" and with a lot of power watch?v=yshjsCYzurE I believe, he could sing it either way, but preferred the lighter tone

JAMES LEVINE!

"For tenor or soprano" is not indication of the composer but editor of the score. And, "Nebbie" Respighi composed the poetry of famous Italian poetesse Ada Negri , female . And because of that - "solA", "disamatA" tristA"....
@andthushesaid16 жыл бұрын
no, he didn't mess up. the text is "pregando i" with a slur in between (because it occurs on one note). he's also a native, and clearly not every single vowel is going to be precise with such dramatic repertoire.

@bellcantomaniac I'm afraid bellcantomaniac is wrong. The early recordings of this song are shorter than this. Listen to the versions by Elsa Olivieri Respighi [with the composer, her husband, at the piano] and Miguel Fleta

this is an extreme comment. but i do agree that this is too fast. this song is a bit too depressing to be rushed through in my opinion. but i must respect the late great pavarotti and the fabulous james levine for their interpretation!
@bradleymonroe64434 жыл бұрын
This song sounds like it would sound better in a singer with a heavy dramatic voice like a heldentenor (dramatic tenor) and Pavarotti sings it with the dramatic interpretation while retaining his full lyric tenor quality. I may sing it with dark baritone color and true tenor resonance like a real heldentenor, in which I may eventually end up, though I am currently a robust lyric tenor now.

How old are you?
@bradleymonroe64433 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-wm4th I am 24 years old yet to be in a certain vocal fach I have to be above that instead of singing a heldentenor aria in my 20's and having vocal damage in later years. Which means I am still developing vocally.

For the people nitpicking this, are you saying you don't get anything from this performance? Really?
@MaestroRigale7 жыл бұрын
Elise Curran One can enjoy a performance while still noticing and acknowledging its flaws. No performer is without flaw, and those of us whose profession is to note and help others improve their technique and performance often do so, even while enjoying said performances.

Still a good performance. It's nice to know the piece is still powerful when not performed exactly as intended.

I suffer. Far, far away The sleeping fog Rises from the quiet plain. Shrilly, cawing, the crows, Trusting their black wings, Traverse the moors, grimly. To the raw bites of air The sorrowful tree trunks Offer, praying, their bare branches. How cold I am! I am alone; Driven through the gray sky A groan of the dead soars. And repeats to me: come; The valley is dark. O sad one, o unloved one, come!

I DO like Pavaroti very much, and I respect James Levine , too, but interpretation of this song IS NOT correct , I'll say it for ever.
