Lyrics:
Harness your hopes on just one person
You know, because a harness was only made for one
Don't telegraph your passes, you'll end up with molasses
Cauterized in syrup and syrup's not molasses
And I'm checking out the asses, the assets that attract us
To anything that moves, we're deep inside the groove
And it's time to shake the rations 'cause someone's gonna cash in
The movie starts at ten, the plot, it never ends
Well, show me a word that rhymes with pavement
And I won't kill your parents and roast them on a spit
And don't you try to etch it or permanently sketch it
Or you're gonna catch a bad, bad cold
'Cause the freaks have stormed the White House
I lived inside a lighthouse
It's on a scenic quay, it's, oh, so far away
Far away from the beginning, the shroud is made of linen
The goth kid has a hearse, the filly lost her purse
Nun is to church, as the parrot is to perch
And my heart's wide open, truly
Leisure, a leisure suit is nothing
It's nothing to be proud of in this late century
And I'm asking you to hold me just like a morning paper
Pinched between your pointer, your index, and your thumb
It's a semi-automatic, believers are ecstatic
You see the way they cling, the cold metallic sting
And I'm living in a coma for Donna de Varona
The harness made of hopes, the lovers on the ropes
Earth-shaking, rattle-snaking
Kiwis are a-home baking
Minds wide open, truly

My now-grown kid didn't need the internet to find Pavement. He grew up hearing and loving them. Whenever we were somewhere with a jukebox that had their songs I gave him the money to play it and then we'd all bask in everybody's positive vibe. Etc. He also plays guitar and knows tons of their songs. Raised right. (I own their first EP and he is constantly trying to get me to give it to him. Nyet.)

yeah i don’t think Steve would let a new pavement album happen, for good reason imo. i think he recognizes the legacy of the band and wants to leave the discography how it is, not taint it with a new record that people aren’t as happy with. some people may even think terror twilight was that already. plus Steve’s solo career is pretty good/great so at least we have that.
@TryNSave
@TryNSave 2 жыл бұрын
@SteadyRythms Dinosaur Jr. pulled it off, and I think Pavement could do it, too. You’re not wrong, but I think his solo career being decent might point to a new album being even more feasible. Regardless, I wish they’d at least do something like what Ween does: tour more often than once every ten years.
@pandaigdig
@pandaigdig 2 жыл бұрын
@@TryNSave ehh steve already reiterated plenty of times that he wants the legacy of pavement to stay as it is. and it actually resonates pretty well because the band is still highly regarded with an unmatched discography (the previous reissues prove to be a wonderful journey too). this terror twilight reissue is already a miracle for longtime and newer fans alike; everyone is well-aware that this was treated more like a malk pre-solo effort than a pavement one. if you’d like to hear something new from them, then i suggest checking out the jicks (they are relatively active; their 2011 album mirror traffic is more in the vein of wowee zowee imo but i was blown away by sparkle hard, their LP in 2018) and the preston school of industry

This video is absolutely charming for us gen X fans to see the material being treated so appropriately by the youth. Pavement videos always had a dont give a fuck aesthetic plus high concept quality that actually translates directly into the tiktok generation even if they probably arent cited as a direct influence very often. And this video perfectly carries that tradition on while bringing it into the modern world, so clever, so pavement.

In the 90s in the UK (maybe elsewhere I don't know) it was common for record companies to put out 2 versions of a single with different b-sides so fans would buy both and it would chart higher. The version of 'Carrot Rope' I bought had this and a song called 'Roll With the Wind'. It was actually the first Pavement record I bought. I was late to the party but I was only 15 and living in a small English town and there wasn't a lot of places to discover alternative stuff. Saw them on the Jo Whiley show on Channel 4 and MTV2 and read about them in Select magazine. Subsequently bought Terror Twilight (which I love, pavement snobs who slag it can f**k off) and worked my way back through their albums. Was gutted that they broke up months after I discovered them, but been listening to them and solo Malkmus ever since. Going to see them with my partner later this year and can't wait.

Harness your hopes On just one person Because you know a harness Was only made for one Don't telegraph your passes You'll end up with molasses Cauterized in syrup And syrup and molasses And I'm checking out the asses The assets that attract us To anything that moves We're deep inside the grooves And it's time to shake the rations 'Cause someone's gonna cash in The plot it turns again The reference starts at ten Well, show me A word that rhymes with Pavement And I won't kill your parents And roast them on a spit And a-don't you try to etch it Or permanently sketch it Or you're gonna catch a bad bad cold And the freaks have stormed the White House I moved into a lighthouse It's on a scenic quay It's oh so far away Far away from the beginning The shroud is made of linen The yearling took your purse The goth kid has a hearse Heart-breaking Earth-quaking Kiwis they are home baking Minds wide open truly Leisure A leisure suit is nothing It's nothing to be proud of In this late century And I'm asking you to hold me Just like the morning paper Pinched between your pointer Your index and your thumb It's a semi-automatic Believers are ecstatic You see the way they cling The cold metallic sting And I'm living in a coma For Donna de Varona The harness made of hopes The lovers on the ropes Nun is to church As the parrot is to perch And my heart's wide open truly
