Good tips on the pavers! I’ve got an older paver patio where the edging is working up and I’ve got to go back, remove it and replace it with new. Big job for a homeowner but worth it to save the thousands in labor I’d have to pay! I’ve use the polimeric sand and regular sand. It’s a LOT MORE expensive than just sand, that’s for sure, but it sure stays put and blocks weeds longer too. Also, for power washing paver patios, if you use the disc washer it is less likely to get a straight on burst and create a cavity that u spoke of. I’ve used it for years a d haven’t had one problem there. Great series, LOVE IT!!

Hey Stan. Didn’t here from you all last week. Hopefully it was a good one. Mine was a struggle as always but this week is going to be great. I was talking to a buddy that’s works for an excavating company and I asked if they needed someone else to help with stuff. So my buddy asked him and he said maybe so hopefully he will. I am really hopeful that he does because not only do I want to work, I can run equipment and do manual labor with out complaining. I’m crossing my fingers that he wants me to work. Chances are low so I’m not going to get my hopes up. Anyway duck opener is this weekend and so is homecoming but duck opener is more important than football and girls right now lol. Great video as usual. How do you transition from overlaying concrete with pavers to pavers on stone base with sand bedding course. This example is around a fiberglass pool with a 3' bond beam. The coping and the pool deck pavers will be thinset on the concrete, and then have to transition to stone base with a sand bedding. The pool deck with extend 10-12' from the waters edge.

I like the video. Interesting to listen to how others do things. Most is fairly standard as far as guidelines. I personally hate the plastic edging. I only do concrete pour in place edging. Ive had to fix or rip out so much plastic edging because its lifted up due to our adverse whether here in upstate NY that I wouldn't use it. I think many times its installer error and they don't sink or secure it right but seems to be a common problem here. I also do a lot of reapplication of polymeric sand and I like it. Looks good, lasts longer but I agree that when the time comes to reapply it there is more work involved as far as getting out of the joints. If you use a little wider swath on the power washer it usually removes it no problem. Your more an expert than me for sure but I just go by what I have seen and done for a while. Good videos though I like seeing the step by step process and logic behind it.

Stan footers are designed not to move that is why they have to be below frost line here in Pa 3’ I would guess where you are at least 4’ if they move that deck will break away from side of house the homeowner would have to worry more about that then a few raised pavers. Project coming along 👍

If the deck isn't connected to the house then it can float. But if the deck is connected then it needs a 48" frost footing. But here we never know if that was done correctly and we have a lot of clay. Our ground MOVES big time during the freeze thaw cycle.

Always following these paver videos with interest. A bit of a gap here from excavation to leveling base? I wanted to see how you prepared the subgrade. I'd love to see the "rust-weld" theory proved somehow. It seems the plastic edging is only held sideways by the shear resistance of the stake, and if it's all rusted the stake loses it's shear strength and even the strength to hold the edging down

I'm confused on the grading of the top surface of the patio now. In the video you said you put a slop to the sub base but only a small level on the top. I was under the assumption that you need at least 1/8" drop for every linear foot of patio - is that not the case?

The top doesn't need to be pitched that aggressively and can be manipulated. the subbase does need to be pitched at least a 1inch drop per 8 foot of run or more.

Hey stan, Im a fan. Im curious where youve got your information on polymeric sand. The gator sand that I use up here in Canada has a 25 year lifespan. Not only does it stop weeds, it makes the patio lock as one. We have literally had to use a jackhammer to get some chipped pavers out because the polymeric is so strong. Im not sure why you think it only lasts 3 years. No hate.

We have used other brands and seen it seperate after 3 years. If I had something last 25 years I would recommend it. Just haven't seen it in person yet.

Stan, have you done any patio's using #1 stone (pea gravel...NOT pea stone) as the paver base instead of sand? Seems like here in the Northeast the trend has changed to that...always great video's by the way!

we have used granite chips which is similiar. Works great by the way.

Class 5. Crushed concrete!! How small are the particles, and what's the percentage of other materials mixed whit? I used Crushed concrete, instead of 53s and i didn't liked the way it compacts..

I know it would be more expensive in the short term, but why not replace the class 5 base material with a concrete slab of equal thickness... Shouldn't that prevent uneven settling of the pavers?
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
The class 5 base is better material inour opinion. It lets us adjust on the fly and if we notice any soil issues as we build.

Great video series - do you typically seal the pavers, too? I had a patio installed last year and already have some staining on the pavers and wondering if sealing would help prevent that. Thanks
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
We don't seal the pavers unless the customer wants us to- sealing has to be redone every few years and needs to be taken off before it can be resealed. Kind of a pain in the butt.

At 3.42 Stan you explain why you Didnt go out past the line of post footings. I get what you explained. But the question I have is, if you were to tie all the concrete footings together in a foundation or a hob that the pavers were to front up against. Would that freeze thaw cycle disturb that type of design. Aussie Jeff.

I think its a way of explaining to customers how to make the job easier for themselves. Now they don't have to do cuts, but the customer has a crappy strip of grass the paver side of the post.

Around here we have lots of clay soil which is suspectible to frost heave. its common for post footings to move seperately than a deck. If we know the post footings are on good base and won't move then we go right up to the posts.

Is there any cases you would use stone dust instead of sand (1 inch) under the pavers? Where I live (up north, Canada) most people seem to use stone dust. Would it be because of cost or ease of use for example? Also, I have lots of ants, does that make any difference? I was planning to do it the Dirt Monkey way and use sand anyways. But just want to double check.

Say you do have to put the pavers around deck footings, how much space do you want between the footings and the pavers?
@Dirtmonkey
@Dirtmonkey 2 жыл бұрын
Some deck footings Don't move- the fotings rest on a good base. Other deck footings I have seen heave as much as 24" inches. No Joke. Those need more space. if the deck footings rest on good soil- go right up to them. But the question is- who knows what lies below deck footings?
