the rifles were easily adapted to fire metallic cartridges.

When the metallica cartridge came along pretty much all of these were converted by a gunsmith to shoot a cartridge instead. It involved putting a barrel insert to reduce the caliber down to .45 and some other operation on the receiver.

@@GuitarGunner Sharps rifle company was contracted by the ordinance department in 1867 to convert 31,000 government rifles to .50-70 government. not .45 caliber.

@@wnchstrman could have. Would have made an interesting object lesson. 30 years ago, I would have said that Rick could get more in Vegas, so a seller's price would be a buyer's price. With the internet, that's no longer the case.

I guarantee the price was negotiated and agreed upon before they drove three hours to get it. The "negotiation" was Hollywooding for the tv audience.

He bullshitted his way buying a guitar that belonged to Mary Ford. Told the guy it needed to go auction. Call Joe Bonamassa, Slash, Rick Nielsen, or even Richard Gere who collects guitars. It would be done in a second.

...the explosive was likely Tannerite, which for the most part can only be detonated by a high velocity projectile.

I loved Pioneer Market in its heyday, it's where I bought my pair of Colt Dragoons, and a Colt SA Army and a pair of .357 Ruger Vaqueros on my second trip. Joe's a great guy to buy from and has some pretty funny stories. 😆

That was clearly using a metallic cartridge. It's either been converted or it was an 1874 model. The 1863 used, as Rick mentioned, a combustible, paper cartridge with a separate percussion cap.

Look closely when he loads it. The Sharps has been converted to shoot center fire brass cartridges. It is NOT in original condition. It should be using paper cartridges. That drops the price drastically.

Yep I picked up on that one too but remember that in 1867 roughly 60,000 were converted to metallic cartridge for continued use by the Army.

The Sharps Rifle and Carbine (Models 1848 to 1881) were chambered for the . 50-90 Sharps cartidge (0.52in caliber/bore).

An assault rifle need to have power and usefulness but it’s main point is that it has to be readily mass produced. The Henry was rare and expensive, and couldn’t be produced as fast or as cheap as the sharps. Only high ranking officers would have something like a Henry

For anyone curious: The explosive target is probably Tannerite. You can buy the 2 powders to mix together yourself at home. Its extremely stable and safe. You can only set it off with a shock-like force, such as a bullet. Edit: I just saw the Star Reactive Targets label on the jar.

Buford's Cavalry at Gettysburg were not only using Sharps, but Stars and Burnside Carbines. By 1864, Union Cavalry was using 7 Shot Spencer Repeating Carbines..

The USMC gunny instructor at fort AP Hill had a couple of sharps and Winchester’s for us to shoot during a visit from the UK. More fun than the modern rifles.

That Sharps seems to be broken at the point where the action pin latches under a small slot in the housing. I have an old Sharps, serial # 1279 that was converted to cased ammunition at some point. Mine has the same broken spot that is supposed to hold the pin in.
